Bad Afternoon last Friday

Last week I took time off work to get some stuff done at home. I'll try to give the "Reader's Digest" version here. I took the kids sledding Friday afternoon after school while the wife went to the home and Garden show with her mother and sister. My youngest son being the dare devil he is, decided to pilot his sled on his own one time and unfortunately that ended up with him hitting a sapling and breaking both bones above the ankle in his left leg. I had the worst feeling ever when I saw his foot flop down when I got down to him. He will be a couch potato now for the next 6 weeks. They were able to set them without surgery. What an ordeal sledding has turned into....

Bummer! Broken bones do heal, but the little guy isn't going to be having a whole lot of fun for awhile.... Come to think of it, that's about the same age I was for the first broken bones!!!!! Give him an extra hug from me!

Very sorry to hear that for him and you. Hope it all heals as it should. It's tough to see your kids learn hard lessons. I had to hold my son still while the doc set his broken arm. That was very hard and I know how you felt.

Broke both bones in my left arm on the first day of the 6th grade. A victim of my own dare devil antics on the jungle gym (monkey bars). Considering some of the crazy things I did, it's a wonder I didn't hurt myself more than I did!

Mike, I hear you on the last part for sure. They wouldn't allow us to be in the room when they set his leg so I can only imagine what it took to get it all lined up and I'm sure precision excessive force was required. Just 5.5 weeks left now. Haha

Hang in there Dad. It'll pass sooner than you realize! Then you'll wish for these days back.

Heck, give the kid a hug from all your friends here at CHR won't you!?!?!

That sucks, and he doesn't look too happy but Hopefully it will heal well by the time schools out. Make sure it heals right, that's going to be his clutch pedal foot.:)

Ryan, How sad for such a cute kid filled with fun, I'm sure all will go well but get him an extra scoop of ice cream or something!

But...we all did silly things when we were young. I've lost count of the bones I broke over my younger years.
Broken toes, wrist, arm, leg, crushed fingers...
But I learnt eventually.
(Self: "If you do that boy it's gonna hurt. Don't do it!")
Yeah...I did learn...but it took a long time.
And I don't know how many times doctors have stitched me back together...
So your boy will recover.
And most probably go on to break more bones yet. It's all part of 'growing up'.

(I have stainless pins in the fingers that I crushed on my right hand. Very often they set off the metal detectors at airports. I've got to stand outside the machine and poke my hand back in to verify that it's my bare hand doing it.)

Thanks guys. He definitely has been getting extra ice cream too. I've been getting extra work outs too. Carrying him every where. :LOL: The little man is 60lbs. That's nothing but when it's about a mile from one building to another that gets old. Haha

At least when you set him down you know where he'll be.......for a short time anyway :LOL::LOL::LOL::LOL:

I'm imagining Colt sitting on that sled, steering with his feet and seeing that sapling racing towards him, and his reaction to stick out his foot to stop or keep from wrecking! OUCH!! That picture of his foot/ankle before they set it makes me cringe for the guy, but the picture of him holding little sister says that he's gonna do OK with his temporary slow down. Hugs.

I have never been in the hospital, but I always wondered why they put oxygen on you for something like a broken bone. Not a big deal, just curious.

Seth, they basically put him to sleep but he was some what conscience. They called it Twilight stage. You are unaware of what's going on and won't remember any of it. They say you don't think to breath so the give you oxygen and do the breathing for you. There were some other reasons too but I don't remember all of them now.

Nothing worse than seeing your kids hurting, we wish it was us!

I used to get that way too, usually with the help of Dr. Jack Daniels! Hope he's doing ok, recovering from broken bones at that age the six weeks seems like 6 years!!!!

I hear that Dave! Haha Colt is doing pretty well now. We haven't had to give him any of the prescribed meds the last few days. We took him in last week for a check up and his bones were still aligned. Under 5 weeks now. :LOL:

Yikes, I'm sorry to hear this. I hope the healing goes quick and well. At least he'll have a good story to tell at school this year! :)

Yep, luckily he's only in pre school. He won't be going back until after spring break I'm guessing.

Ooooh, ouchy! He's young and healthy; a year from now, he won't even know it was broken. Dad's memories, on the other hand, well, they're there for life. Wishing you both well.

Hard to see this stuff as a dad. Hoping for a full recovery!....and hot rod toys to keep him happy.

Broke my collarbone when I was 12 standing up on the sled. Sled stopped but I didn't. Tell son good luck.

Colt got his last cast off last Thursday March 29th. The X rays showed the bones healed nicely so the doctors decided he no longer needed a cast. hey said see you in 6 weeks. Ok, cool, thanks. We've been trying like crazy to get him to walk. Her is so freaked out and traumatized from seeing his ankle dangling/flopping, he is afraid to put weight on it. we've tried everything. I am still trying to understand why they don't offer kids physical therapy for situations like this.

We did get a walker from my mom and we have gotten Colt to attempt to stand up and put weight on it. He is "walking" with the walker. He will not put weight on it though. I took him outside and his little ass will peddle the wheels right off a pedal tractor. You can get him to push your hand with his leg when you're playing around. But in no way does he want to put weight on that leg. Hopefully we can get him coxed into walking the next couple of days.

Poor little guy has had quite the time of it I'd say.
I'm sure after a bit more time he won't be so pre-occupied and it'll just happen, then he'll realize what's happening! LOL..

Mike, probably. He just has to figure out that it is ok and then he'll be over it.
