Another Tool Box

I got back from my annual trip to Illinois about a week ago. While I was back there my brother offered me my dad's old tool box....of course I said yes!!!!

Life for the old box hadn't been kind in the 19 years since dad passed away. Of course virtually all of dads hand tools were long gone, but I am just happy to be able to save the box.

As it would just be in the way until I got it refurbished, it was the first project I started on when I got back. I purposely left a couple of the dents in it.......I wanted it to look like it did when dad was using it when he was a tractor mechanic rather than when it was new on the store floor. The drawer handles came back from powder coating today so I was able to finish it up. With the paint, new lock and drawer liners I know I spent more on it than Dad paid for it new in 1969, but I am really happy with the way it turned out.

Of course now part of tomorrow will be spent rearranging my tool boxes to make room for it and shifting tools around. :LOL:

Awesome Mike! I know when I use a tool that belonged to my father it certainly brings back memories. A couple tears may be in order here!

My dad was a mechanic, has been dead for many years as I'm 68 years old. I still have his old tools. A lot of transmission tools for the old cast iron hydromatics, powerglides, jetaways, etc. It's fun to go on e-bay and look up vintage snap on tools and see what they are worth now. But like you to me they are priceless. You will enjoy them and hopefully bring a smile to your face when you see it setting there.

Mike, very nice work on the tool box! I have the Mac tool box my Dad had in his old shop when I was growing up. I remember pulling out the bottom drawer to stand in/on it to get stuff off of the top of it. I actually tore down the old milk house Dad used as a shop in 2009. I put up another building on it the old foundation and his old tol box sets right where it used to now that I think about it. Now that I've got a small garage, he can actually use the shop for him self now.

Anyhow, enough about me. I'm sure having that box home will bring back a lot of memories for you that you can share with your grand kids.

Thanks all, I'm very happy to have it. It does bring a smile to my face, and I'm sure dad would approve. I've decided that I have one last little thing to do to it. When I get a chance, I'm going to have a small brass tag made for it with dad's name and the year he bought it.

I spent part of today getting the boxes rearranged and moving tools around.....seven more drawers and I could still use more :LOL:

The new arrangement gives me a new bench to work on (clutter up) and I think I'll like the new arrangement. By the way, the 3 drawer cabinet in the center of the bench is my original tool that I bought new in 1968.

My Dad has actually been after me to go get (save) his tools and box. A simple craftsman box with basic craftsman tools, wrenches, socket set etc... I have no real use for them/it but I guess I'll drag'em home and add to the current clutter! LOL.. He fancied himself a regular handiman for a time ( he wasn't!) and he just loved buying a new tool.. maybe that's where I got the bug!:LOL:
