Rick: "Country Music? Nah...not my cup of soup."
She Who Must Be Obeyed: "The tickets are how much? Then there's a taxi fare there and back on top of that...and it's 8 o'clock at night...it'll be eleven before we get back...no (expletive) way!"
Looks like we're not going...
Not gonna pack a sad, jb! Lots to do in Music City! 10 Uniquely Nashville Things to Do in Music City | Visit Nashville, TN - Music City
Hope you enjoy your day!
The souvenir shirt that jb & Rosie gave me during our travels of NZ last year. I had to ask jb for a "cheat sheet" to understand meanings, which I kept for reference! Unique NZ terminology arranged in the shape of the two islands making up their beautiful country.

The Opry stage where its at now has a center circle of the stage made out of the original wood of the original-Its historic, its awsome ----------
and for Rick--------its not that its country music--its OPRY------modern day country music as played on the radio these days don't excite me either-but I love the STUFF from back a little in time
And every one wanting to be in MUSIC these days goes thru Nashville-except those GANGSA type head banging types------
and the Opry dancers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Johnboy----if they don't want to go--------go alone
The OPRY is on my list of one of the great things about this country and travels around it, it just isn't 350million years old like the canyon
And it is something that O'Bama won't be able to rename like the mountains, etc
You might note that #6 of the "10 Uniquely Nashville...." link I posted clarifies that the Grand Ole Opry shows are at Opry Land during the summer tourist season, but November through February they are back at the Ryman, their home since 1943. I think if I were making the trip it would be a late Fall/Winter trip vs the amusement park venue.
The Opryland hotel next door isn't too shabby either.
Monday 31st August.
Away by 9:00 (a deliberate ploy this time to avoid the worst of rush-hour traffic,) to head back to the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.
What a great place!
And the memories it brought back from when I wore a younger man’s clothes: Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Duane Eddy (timeless magnificent tunes,) Roy Orbison, Merle Haggard, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash and so on and on ad infinitum…
We were the fortunate generation; grew up in an era/atmosphere that had never existed before, and will never be replicated.
We spent around three hours there, and I loved every minute of it.
Highly recommended.
While waiting for 9:00 to arrive, I had sat on top of the bank outside the motel and watched the traffic.
The off-ramp traffic (mainly trucks,) from the motorway gets a very short period of green light at the intersection with the road that runs through the valley immediately below me.
I noticed two things:
1) The American practice of ‘turn right with care on red’ works extremely well.
There are three lanes down the off-ramp; left turn only, left and straight ahead, and right turn only.
The right turn only lane never had more than five or six vehicles banked up…whereas the other two lanes were chocker right back to the motorway.
And 2) The idiot (always a car,) that stopped in the line, put his car in neutral, applied the park brake, then waited for the vehicle in front of him to actually move away before putting his car back in gear, releasing the park brake, taking only an extra four or five seconds to move ensured only three (sometimes four,) vehicles got through on that green.
When everybody started moving (almost) in unison, up to five vehicles made it through.
Hmm…
I digress…
From the MHoFM we wandered a few blocks to the Johnny Cash Museum; spent a happy couple of hours there too.
This too is highly recommended.
My only complaint here was that it was more crowded than the previous museum, people kept wandering (and stopping,) in front of me when I’m trying to read/view something, or talking in loud voices when I’m trying to listen to something.
Bloody tourists!
They should be banned!
Headed back to the motel around 3:30; entirely sated by all we’d seen…although we had to stop en route for another six-pack…I polished off the last two Arrogant Bastards last night.
And I couldn’t (today anyway,) find any more. Gonna have to be happy with a six-pack of Negra Modelo.

JB, I'm glad you all are having a great time! I bet your park brake setting car drivers are actually neck deep in their cell phones and they aren't even paying attention to the road or traffic. That seems to be the deal everywhere here. Man, I wish I could remember the BBQ place we ate at outside of Nashville because it was awesome!
About 4 years ago we went to Nashville and I regret not being able to take my wife to a show there. Everything was expensive and we were on a budget. But we did do the tour and stand on the old stage. It was awesome! I think a year before we were there, the river flooded it and they had just re-opened it not much before we were there. There was a mall across from it that was still closed due to the city and owners being in a tiff or something. We also drove by the grand ol opry motel. man that was a sight. We visited the dukes of hazard museum down the street which is something that may be banished due to recent BS. We roamed down town Nashville and it really was a great place. It's pretty cool to visit a place that has so much history, and is also making it while you're there. We'll go back someday to an actual show.
I've been in the Opryland hotel, but only to the little restaurant off to the side. The foyer has a chandelier that looks like something from "Gone With The Wind".. and the sides of the walls past the foyer are plastered with pictures of the Opry hall of fame members. And no, I couldn't afford the place either I just happened to be with a lady that has a lot of influence.
Taking the advice of our resident self-proclaimed curmudgeon, I had a burrito for my last night's munchies.
I'm not a great fan of pastry in any way, shape, or form, so I left what it came wrapped up in, and ate just what was in the middle.
Enjoyed it; very tasty indeed.
Thanks uncle Bob!
I got 2 favorite( depending on time of day) places to eat when going thru Nashville area---Spaghetti Factory downtown on 2nd street and Don Pablo southeast of BNA in Murfeesburro on old fort parkway
whats you direction of travel out off Nashville------I think you have said Corvette factoy and museum at Bowling Green? but after that?
Had a short note from jb a bit earlier:
Elizabethtown is half way between Bowling Green & Louisville, so the Corvette Museum is behind them, and they must have bypassed Mammoth Cavern & the park, but the way they move they may have hit them all. I suggested the Louisville bat factory, as it's a fascinating tour. Couldn't think of anything else that we've ever done there.... Hopefully we'll see a travel log entry from him tonight.Quote:
