To some degree I agree with the attached author, and I'm sure he has more to say but had to hit what he thought was most important in the space he had. This is just the latest sign of what we've been seeing for several years. Yeah, the focus of many was lost until the Force stuff started to hit the fan, but other biggies suffered the same sponsor flight, just with a bit less fanfare. What many are now starting to realize is they are in a thinning forest and just didn't realize it because they didn't pay enough attention. NASCAR might well be heading that way too with the loss of Sprint at the end of their contract.
The most significant mistake I think some of our fellow travelers make is to think something like, "Good, big money has ruined the sport, now we can get back to just like it used to be. NHRA is Satan incarnate." Ain't gonna happen. Like the current model or not, the pro series product is what kept the whole show (sportsman classes included) afloat. Sure, there will always be some form of drag racing in the future (after all, our ancestors did it with horses), but certainly not like recent years and never again like what some see as the "golden age".
Breaks my heart! I got obsessed with drag racing in the fifties! For decades I have watched the possibility of racing in pro classes move farther and farther out of the reach of the average racer.
Losing "the dream" discouraged my initial plans to follow that path long ago. I am not surprised that other fans slowly lose interest.
There are other things involved to... such as the fact that the cars of today are becoming far removed from what we see on the track. The Muscle cars of the sixties were dead on with drag racing, so an enthusiast could buy one and start racing on weekends.
Lastly, one of the things I miss the most is the fact that the cars are faster now, but for me they are far less exciting. It's hard to compare today's straighter and smoother on-track passes of even the fastest classes, to the gear banging, wheel standing Gassers, that spent much of their time going sideways and breaking driveline parts!
I have to be happy to remember growing up near Indy in the sixties and seventies! I went to the Nationals from '62 to '74. Those were exciting times!!!

I really don't understand the animosity with/against Al Anabi.. rich guy wants to spend monies in motorsports, runs a bunch of teams and then gets bored with it all. So what???
I can't say I have to blame him (or others like him) for sad times in motorsports. I believe it's just a natural evolution, even in all forms of sports! Drag racing specifically evolved from a bunch of kids who wanted to organize into something bigger and better than where they started, and the evolution includes running so fast that it takes huge teams with hundreds of employees and bucket loads of money and even larger budgets for all the different latest techno gadgets to keep searching for a way to go just a hundredth of a second faster.

It had to happen, Garlits called it years ago as well. Even NASCAR tries to create a formula that breeds drama and passion yet keeps the cars at a safe speed for drivers and spectators.
But, at hand is the question of a owner pulling out and some folks are happy about it. I guess I have to say that a lot of folks have pulled out yet we never hear much (or anything) about it, but the rich oilman leaves and the net goes buzzing.. whatever! We'll see what happens next - a new formula is being stirred as we speak, maybe it'll benefit the grass roots effort? That would be nice, but the grass roots can't cover all the bills. I wonder what else will be in the formula?
