Scooter, you're gonna find that in a West Texas winter there's nothin' between you and the north wind of the Dakota's but a barbed wire fence, and it's down. What's called "west" is really the northwest, tucked right below the panhandle of Oklahoma. Hope that you find it to be all you want, but also hope you're not planning on leaving your heavy coat behind....
odessa area. and DFW
I spent a week in Dalhart, TX one night . . .
winter only visits here .
the unemployment rate in the midland odessa area is around 3%
Roger's correct about the 3 strand fence that's down but it's not all bad. Some decent huntng around the area and the Night Life used to be pretty decent also. Get ready for a major change of scenery but try and enjoy if ya can.

I used to know a couple of women down there, but they are older now----------
To gassersrule_196.
There's nothing wrong working in the oil fields in that area..... Just keep your eyes open at night..... In addition to the high temps, high humidity, frequent lightning storms, we also have a little wind. See picture below.
Good luck,

From one extreme to the other. Good luck with it! I have an Uncle in the Lake Charles area who runs a plastic processing plant, and another Uncle in the Leander/Austin area who repairs concrete pump trucks. They love it as they were raised in Colorado and Wisconsin and despise winter now. DFW sure has plenty to do and I've spied a lot of old tin laying around. Maybe you will find that next project there!
on the 8th day god created texas ............... on the 9th it was tornado's .
grandma lives in kansas dad was raised there i know all about that spooky stuff. also driving over the road i kept my eyes open. spending a spring/summer in kansas also. i love the midwest flat or not. not sure why but its great to me. also looking forward to being a bit closer to my family members in kansas cant wait to go back and see them and the state love it there.
When I was in Basic at Lackland AFB (a fair bit futher south) I remember a DI saying something like "you boys can go AWOL if ya want, but we'll still be able to see ya 3 days later....".
Enjoy the adventure Scooter, life's a ride................
Being from Kansas now, but having had grandparents who lived out near Yellow House Switch, SE of Littlefield, TX where we visited often when I was a pup, I can attest that while we say Kansas is flat it's rolling plains are not flat like West Texas is flat. ;) That area of Texas is like a pool table. Like everyplace it has some beautiful features, but you just have to look a little harder to find them, or wait for Mother Nature to bring them to you.
Enjoy the change of scenery, Scooter!:D Being able to run up the road to visit Grandma is a very good thing!
and there are thousands of old steel cars and trucks along the road-----------buy them all!!!!!!!!!!
If it was good enuff for Buddy, Roy and Waylon then it can't be that bad. and remember just because the forecast predicts clear skies, doesn't mean they'll be blue.
Shine, very true. reason for the 9th day was to clean up the mess he made on the 8th. http://www.clubhotrod.com/images/icons/icon6.png
I live almost in sight of Flower Mound, Tech. And Jerry, I have known a couple of ladies there, and I have to say that neither of them mentioned you!
I was born here and I have left several times but I always came crawling back. The reason? This has always been where the jobs are.
It's good to hear from you, Scooter. Good luck.

hopefully i might be able to round a few of the texas members up and meet some people at a local race or something
Abilene has a good track , one in denton . pass on kenedale , not worth the trip .
Jim---the women I knew were over by Amarillo and Hereford---one was an old girl friend and the other was a model that
worked at a Amarillo maul where our car was on display before Texas/California race--------
Jerry, I have lived in both Hereford (1966) and Amarillo (1978 to 1984). Our son was born in Amarillo. I was single in Hereford and had a couple of girl friends there and by this time they would definitely qualify as OLD girl friends.
I was Braniff's manager in Amarillo when the company began to sink.
I liked living in the Texas "pan handle" a lot. My lovely wife didn't dig it one bit so, consequently, we moved and I took a job with a construction company.

Braniff-----didn't they use aliens for stewardess????
I loved the paint scemes---I even was called down there for an interview for flight crew----their flight the night before was very late and I had gotten up early that morning ( 4 am) because I started at 6, so I slept in till 10am and went to personel for early afternoon interview--after the tests and stuff I had to do an interview with chief pilot but since he had already interviewed enough guys for the number of openings in the next class, he went home and to play golf or something like that---------
Personel peeps were upset -----------
I can see where a person might come to a space alien conclusion if they saw a couple of our flight attendants wearing clear acrylic helmets topping their uniforms. Braniff merged with Mid Continent Airlines sometime before they used bad judgement and hired me. That deal gave Braniff a few cities known for having winters that are less that hospitable. places like Minneapolis, Sioux Falls, and yep ..... Amarillo. Some of our young ladies seemed to think that blowing snow and ice had a bad effect on their hair-do when they had to leave the aircraft (usually a posh Convair 340 or 440). The helmets did cause some wiseass commentary but, I'm told, they did serve a utilitarian purpose. I never heard a girl say that they liked the things, or even ever put one on their head for anything other than pictures.
One thing I do know is that somewhere under the thing was probably a plenty good looking female!
Jim
:eek::eek::eek:
Where did you find that stuff!
A lot of girls didn't want to wear those stockings (or leotards, or whatever they called them). They said they looked like the wearer had really bad veins in their legs.
....... Good point.
Jim
One of my roommates was a manager for Braniff at O'Hare in 61------I think them and Ozark shared gates/people except for a couple of leads----------
