Made a run up to downtown KC this morning and took in the World of Wheels for a few hours. A highlight was a '49-'52 Chevy top chop being done on site by none other than Gene Winfield and a crew of his helpers.

This '29 was a magazine car in the very early '60's, sold in the '80's and the son got it back in the '90's and re-built it as original. Pure '60's hot rod...

Didn't see him today, but I talked to the owner of the hiboy sedan at the Old Marais show in Ottawa last year, just after he had finished it. The stance is perfect, and it's finished very nicely.

It was fun to chat with a young man that was polishing the bright red '60's style '29 roadster in the first group, around 18/19/20 in the pictures. I commented about the pure '60's style, and he was eager to share that the car was built in the late '50's by his Grandpa, "...using a cuttin' torch and a stick welder." He said that the rear wheels had spacers that had been cut out with a cutting torch, and when they went through the car they elected to leave them. During the early to mid '60's the car was in several magazine features, and was quite popular. Later the car was sold due to health reasons, and was gone for about 15 years. The young man said that his Dad saw an advertisement in a car magazine offering the car, recognized it as the one his Dad had built, and bought it back. His Dad was gone, but the car became a father/son (really son/grandson) project. The interior was ratty, but enough remained for the interior guy to know how it looked, and as they went through it they only did upgrades for safety, like boxing the frame that had remained open. Everything else they replaced with like items, and brought it back to the glory days status. A really neat story.
