    metal choice

     



    I'm looking to box a fram on a 51 chevy pick.also need to make some brackets, so I'm looking to buy some 3\16 steel plate, just looking for mild steal isn't working, there are so many types some with no., cold rolled hot rolled, i'm confused. Would like a sheet about 4'x 4' square. any help?

    for brackets and braces, just plain old mild steel will do fine.

    Go to your local Metal By The Foot, Metal Cut to Length, or whatever you have where you can buy cut lengths of metal as opposed to full sheets, full length sticks, etc, etc. Tell them what you want, what it's for and they'll fix you up.

    i like pickled mild steel or cold roll as it will not have mill scale on it

    Go to la Habra on the south side if lambert rd between cypress and harbor bl. there is a metal new and used buy it but the pound. nice people the have a little bit of everything sorry cant remember the name.....ted

    found a place called asco metal in santa fe springs, got a nice piece of 3\16x4'x4, THANK'S for all the advice.

    3/16" is way overkill 1/8" is completely sufficient
    Its aweful lonesome in the saddle since my horse died.

    Steve's right, unless the "brackets" you're making are motor/tranny mounts 1/8" stock would be plenty, and that should have been in my earlier response. Sorry, Craig. You'll be increasing your grinding by 1/3 using that 3/16" for boxing plates. Maybe they'll swap it out for you if you've not cut into it yet?
