Johnboy, I believe the Toy Museum in Stanton is closed or at least it appeared to be last weekend. Stop and see, as it is at the exit for Meramec Caverns so its not out of the way.

Just checked the internet and it says the Toy Museum closed in 2009. But you can go to the Jesse James wax museum next door. :)
Thanks for that.
I'll try to upload some pics
Six more sleeps and we'll be landing in Chicago.
We're both looking forward to it . . . and to getting to meet up with some of you lot too.
We'll be en route on Route 66!
(Yeah yeah, a bad pun I know; but I couldn't resist it.) :) :)
I'd better go check my lap-top, see if it still fires up; haven't used it in a while . . .
These are some pictures I took earlier this year of the original 66
Those two gas stations look like they're still operational.
Petrol at 15c / gallon?
I'll fill my suitcase too!
Crikey!
That was nearly a disaster!
CHR reckoned I was an usurper pretending to be me, and wouldn't allow me access with the lap-top . . . and dumped me from the desk-top (this one,) too!
It has taken me about an hour to log back in again.
Although most of that was my fault . . . with my failing eyesight I mistook a 1 for an I.
So after five attempts I got banned for fifteen minutes.
:o :o
The station with the $.15 sign is a sort of museum and I believe the second one is operational and they both lie on stretches that have been bypassed.

Will do mate!
Just to let everyone know, jb & Rosie arrived in Chicago, did some local site seeing and got acclimated to the local time, and Rosie texted that they "...saw Dave's plane yesterday, and are heading SW toward Joliet, IL and the White Fence Farm this morning. I've not seen anything from jb on the computer yet, so not sure if he's linked up the laptop or not. Our weather guy says that we're headed to a great weekend after a rainy week, so the Ottawa, KS Old Marais River Run car show should be a great one this year!
Haven't heard anything to date. Unfortunately, work has taken me on the road the last couple days. I'll be around this afternoon, but I have a meeting to be at, 5pm.
Polk-A-Dot stop between Joliet & Gardner.
I sure am hankering for some Ted Drews.........
Had a note from johnboy and they are in Staunton, IL for the night, hoping to catch Ted Drew's Custard sometime tomorrow. He mentioned that he had tried to hook up with Pro70Z28 but no joy - left a message and had to keep moving. jb says he's going to be at our place tomorrow evening, ready to hit the car show down in Ottawa Saturday morning, but it's a 600+ miile jaunt if he stays on Route 66 through MO down to Joplin and then heads north off route. That'll be a long day.
Hell, Staunton, Il is just about an hour away from me. If you hear from let him know that there is nothing really planned here tomorrow that I can't walk away from to get some Ted Drewes Frozen Custard. Here's a typical weekend night at Ted Drewes.....joe

Get a pic Roger.............never happened if there's no pics..........
I met John and his lovely wife at Ted Drewes in St Louis, Mo. When I got there they were already enjoying Ted Drewes Famous Frozen Custard :D We BS'd for a while about their trip, where they are going and that they had done this trip once before with another group of people & didn't get the time to slowwww down and enjoy the sites of this country even more.
Here's proof they were here, sorry none of my ugly mug w/either of them since Johns wife has that pic & as we all know they're having problems getting on line here in the states. Soooo you'll have to just believe me that I did meet them & that I took this pic.
They are now on their way to Kansas City to meet up w/Roger & hopefully go to a car show there.
Hope they enjoy their stay in the states......joe

.
Glad you hooked up, Joe. I had a message from jb this morning agreeing that trying to cram 600 miles of driving into one day was not going to help with their "...see the details of Route 66" plan, so they'll be finding a place down in mid to western Missouri this evening, and then will drive up to Ottawa Saturday morning to take in the show and kick back a bit. We'll do our best to show them a good time, without getting too rowdy.....
600 miles is a nice drive for a day, IF you got started early and you can do 70mph. Don't blame them for stopping cause there is a lot to see on RT66 from St Louis into Kansas and the speed limit is about 55mph. I would have done the same depending on how far I was to my destination. Did a couple 17hr drives when the son came home from overseas, talk about a ball busting, back breaking hard ride. Nothing I look forward to do again & thankfully the kid is back home in the states for good.
Now I just have to figure out how to hang this NZ calender , does it go upside down?????
.
Not sure of their departure, but after a 2 hour notice they pulled in here about ten minutes ago, so they didn't do 55 all the way from St Louis!!
Pass on a big Hello and Welcome to the states from me
Same here and if they are still around Sunday I have to be in Raymore at noon, maybe we can meet up.
Ken,
At this point we're planning to be down at Ottawa Sunday until mid to late afternoon, then heading back to Gardner. Not sure what your plans are but maybe we could meet somewhere, or you can swing over to the Gardner area? I'll PM you my phone number & address.
jb & I hit the Ottawa show early Saturday, and the ladies joined us about mid-day with a bit of trouble finding us in almost 2000 registered cars this year!! He & I went back Sunday and it was a much more laid back setting, with maybe half of the cars back, much, much less congestion on the ring road, and lots less people wandering around. A great show! On the way out of town we hooked up with Ken, NTFDAY, for a short visit and to "put faces with names". He was up in Raymore, a KC suburb, and diverted his return to meet us as we were leaving Ottawa.
Today I've managed a visit to Dean Weller's "Grandpa's Garage" in DeSoto (not normally open to the public on any regular schedule), and then to see a private collection of a retired car dealer I know who has a wide range of vehicles in a museum quality setting. Tomorrow is back to Route 66, heading to Oklahoma to visit with people who rode their bus back in the '50's & 60's for a few days, then following the great migration to California!!
A couple of pic's to show they were here.

Mountain man (and woman) on the plains..................looks like they're having a great time. Keep on keepin' on gang............
I enjoyed the visit and yes it was nice to faces on names, wish I could have made the show in Ottawa. From what I saw of cars heading in the other direction it was a great show. BTW, Roger's 33 looks better in person.
Thanks for the updates Roger! Looks like a good time was being had by all!
Wow hope you had a great trip. Missed this thread until now, site seems to be down lately when I log on.
What's that brew you guys are drinking there,John?? Must taste the same as Lion Brown, does it?? ;);)..All these collections sound kool.. Hope you have a seriously large battery in the camera... Kool..:cool:
That brew was Dark Truth by the local Boulevard Brewing Company at 9.8% alcohol content. We also sampled a nice Bourbon Barrel Quad from Boulevard which clocks at 11.4%! Both do the job....
Today we visited Grandpa's Garage, and Dean gave us 2 hours of his time for a totally delightful walk-a-bout of his garage. Next we stopped by the private collection of 32 cars and about that many antique pedal cars, and finished with a friends garage with a '32 Vicky, '32 3W Coupe, '65 Falcon Sprint, two '57 'Birds, and a 2002 'Bird that was the first of the "new 'Birds" in KC and has less than 1500 miles on the clock. All in all a very good day. Tomorrow will see us wishing jb & Rosie safe travels to Oklahoma and points beyond.

Glad to see they're having loads of fun along the way.
This morning I escorted jb & Rosie to the on-ramp of I35S. Since they're swapping rental cars in Oklahoma City to have more room for another couple, they decided to shoot straight down I35 vs heading down towards Joplin, MO and doing that section of Route 66, so they've opted out of the piece from St Louis to OKC which is an excuse for another trip in the future!! Actually they did the whole thing several years back, driving LA to Chicago and back to LA in three weeks!! Not much spare time for sights on that trip....
Great to see CHR members meeting up, especially with our Down Under members. Whats not to enjoy, beer and hot rods, Route 66 - Much Fun!
Once my full time job of caring for Mother has finished, my first stop will be California to purchase my 39/40 Ford Tudor to travel all over America meeting up with as many friends as possible and not miss any of the awesome sites to see. I am hoping to have an open time plan for this trip but it will wait until Mum has past and I hope that isn't to soon. So I am enjoying the coverage of this trip, thanks guys and gals...
I had a note from johnboy this afternoon and he attached a post he had made to his local Maverick's site, which is a closed NZ forum of perhaps thirty members. He's not going to post on CHR until he returns to NZ, but he mentioned to me that I might post his Maverick entry here, just to give everyone an update from his perspective. This is from jb:So far it has surpassed all expectations; but its been the people we've met who have made it like that. Like the people we met on our previous trip that have actually remembered us. That's something I didn't expect. those who were directly/indirectly involved with the bus, perhaps; but the local motelier, the proprietress of the local eatery? Totally unexpected! They both knew us before we'd even spoken a word when we arrived in Perry, OK. Unbelievable.
And the people from Club Hot Rod ..... amazing. Roger and Susan Spears took us in to their own house, fed and watered (read beer :)) us and drove us all over the countryside on their own time and at their expense. Very humbling.
Had an appointment this morning with the 'girls' at Kumback (sic) Cafe at 8:30 am.
We were about ten minutes late, couldn't find a park, and walked in to be pushed to a table with about six old dears around it. Bloody hell! The Nazis had nothing like the interrogation we got here! Then the reporter/photographer from the local paper turned up to interview us and take photos . . . bloody embarrassing!
And once again we weren't allowed to pick up the tab . . . instead we were given two 'Kumback Café' tee shirts! So not only were we not allowed to pay; we were showered with gifts as well!
Then in the arvo (afternoon) we were given a guided tour of the outfit that Dick Smelser works for - Ditch Witch (RLS Note - Dick and his wife will be accompanying jb & Rosie on the remainder of the trip, with Dick acting as Driver to relieve the stress of our "wrong side" driving ;)). Bloody fascinating. The plant covers 35 acres, all under (essentially) one roof. The tour was supposed to last about half to three-quarters of an hour, but I was so interested I kept on asking questions and eventually we exited nearly two and a half hours later. I shook our guide's hand, (a fella named Rich) and said: "Thanks for that, that was bloody interesting!" He gave me a grin, and said: "Yeah. Surprisingly enough I found it so too! It was the best tour I've taken, and I've taken a few!"
So what is happening with the Happy NZ Couple along RT 66?????????????
I had a phone text from them on Sunday night 9/29 that they were in Grants, NM, west of Albuquerque and having a great time. Their friends from Perry, OK are now traveling with them, and John is enjoying having a driver which allows him to relax and watch the countryside. That's all I know at this point.
I've tried several times to click on to CHR only to have the site regard me as an interloper; telling me: 'That user-name is taken,' and 'That e-mail address is registered to another user,' but to-night it has allowed me to log on.
So I'll copy/paste from the Mavericks' site,
uesday we left Roger and Susan Spears in Gardner Kansas around 8:30 am and took off for Perry Oklahoma, arriving about 1:00 pm.
Many thanks people for a bloody gorgeous three days; your hospitality is something we'll remember for a long long time.
Booked in to the Super 8 motel and got recognised from our stay 3 years back.
"You're from New Zealand, you bought a local bus and took it back to turn into a motorhome right?"
'Yep. That's us."
So then we had to spend half an hour yarning about the thing.
Okay, downtown for a quick feed.
(There's really only one place that serves decent tucker; we found that out last time we were here.)
Walked in, and before we even opened our mouths it was "I know you! You're the Kiwis that bought . . . "
"Yep. That's us."
"Does Marilyn know you're here?"
"No, not yet."
But Marilyn very quickly did; and turned up at our table before we'd even ordered from the menu.
So then the proprietress and Marilyn sat, and talked, and asked questions, and watched us eat.
In the end we had to excuse ourselves and leave, but not before promising to return to-morrow.
Okay: off to OK City to trade in the car for a people mover; more suitable for four adults plus luggage.
Because of the delays yarning we came out of OK City bang on rush hour.
Oh dear.
And golly gosh.
But we made it!
Bugger the Avis rule of not smoking in their cars . . . I was just about lighting the next one off the butt of the last.
Back to Perry, in to the motel, Subway Sandwich and a relaxing beer or two for tea.
All good.
