I took My 29 ford up to a Shell station that was built in 1930 and took a few photo's. I wanted to share this with you'all. I think they are really COOL.
we have Shell station around here but none that old, This one is up at Gillmore
Awesome photos and the bit of history. Where in the USA is that and is that sitting on it's original site ? The 'A looks cool too and it must have three pedals in it by the look of the remote filler thingys on the firewall.
Thats way cool, we had one in our area, actually about a mile down the road much like charlie`s pic with the old pumps, it was still operating into the early seventies, when the oil embargo hit it closed up, then in the eighties things started to disappear, now its just kind of a shell, I`ll try and get pics of it...
This station is in Winston Salem and has just been took over by the historical people of the town. It is on the same sight it was built on and my grandfather helped build it. I used to push my bicycle up there and get air in the tire. Whiplash, I put wilwood pedals in and one of the master cylinder's is for the hydralic(opp's) clutch for the 5 speed tranny, the other two are front and back brake's.Work's really well.
Here's mine. grandpa opened it in 1927. The picture is from around 1959 after he added on, the inset pic in the lower left hand corner is from a few years ago. We had the pumps until 1989 but they succumbed to the cost to meet EPA regulations. No great loss as far as I'm concerned, me and brother still make a good living with out them.
I love to look and think about them days and how people made it back then!!!

As far as Shell stations, we have a lot of them around here but they're modern not cool historic stuff like above.

Shell has vanished from New Zealand...taken over by a local outfit who have rebranded it "Z".

Cool trip down memory lane! Never seen one with an actual shell shaped building! Just think if a carpender had to make one of those today. We are losing our skills to modern popup over night strip mall mentality! Neat to see the old stuff being preserved.
Thanks too for letting me know where to look on goggle earth as I enjoyed zooming in and having a look around the old buildings of Winston Salem.
