Yeah today cars are a huge yawn, only thing I notice is less for higher prices, what is full size today, a mid size. The last new vehicle I bought was a 99 truck and unless forced to will be the way it stays for me. Now people need to be concerned about what uncle sam has put in the car to keep an eye on the drive as they, LOL enjoy the freedom of the road. I find that a very fugly and intrusive.
I know it is not talked about and not sure why but, looking back 99 is about the time. I think the wonderful computer in the car started to take on new responsibilities. Not going to bore the hell of out of anyone, but consider this thought. You read how the oppressive, hungry government wants to tax folks by the miles they drive, well take a wild guess how that would happen.
My thoughts are that little piece of code could already be in place on the newer cars ( government motors ) just waiting to be turned on. They already track your location with the wonderful GPS, on star just to mention one.
So much for my morning rant, just throwing out some food for thought. Our old cars are becoming more valuable cause of what they don't do. Hell if they get really good at control. You speed, the car will pull over and call the fuzz on you. He will show up with a USB drive insert in to the diag port allowing your car to start, and the bonus the car will keep your driving record onboard ...... good stuff.
That's already happening, Pepi. At the Ford dealership one of the managers tossed his keys to a young porter one morning and told him to drive it down to the next interchange on the interstate before they pulled it in to change the oil. A bit later the service manager strolled into his office with a sly grin, and asked "How come you've been driving 125mph, Bill? Running from the Sheriff?" The manager was flabbergasted, but they quickly ID'd the porter as the culprit, and called him on the carpet. He sheepishly admitted he'd extended his run down the interstate several miles and had "...seen what the new Mustang would do." Turned out that "select" vehicles had an extra chip that logged all critical information on the vehicle, and reported it back to FMC, "for vehicle research". The word was that this extra chip was in random vehicles, and that it was NOT documented in any paperwork that would let the owner know.
If we looked back at Orwell's 1984 we're probably well past most of the stuff that we found totally unbelievable and unreasonable back in the day.... Big Brother is indeed watching, and he's not necessarily our friend.
JMO I pretty much find that all cars are cool looking in there on way. But I'am with you guys that new cars today have no lines at all. Cookie cutter cars.
GM with On-Star, Ford with My Touch, and Fiat --- err Chrysler with Uconnect, I believe, gives any agency or group instant information as to where you are, speeds and many other parameters that you might not want to divulge. I'm not going to get into the rest of the '1984' scenario for fear that Bill will again give me a dope slap. I drove Mercedes Trucks for a large Australasian Company ( Linfox Logistics ) for many years and the info could be uploaded from the trucks computer at anytime by the transport manager and could give him all the speeds, missed gear shifts etc from your tractor whenever he wanted. Watching Ice Road Truckers TV program this week filmed up in Alaska and they can do the same with the Kenworths they use. So big brother has been watching for awhile sadly...
It was reported last summer I believe, that in europe they began testing "speed zones" , these were created for residential areas and your car would respond to some central controller, to control your vehicle speed while in the zone. I never heard the outcome of the tests but, I can only imagine every metropolis will have this setup so that while in their "juridiction" they'll protect you from yourself.. and others..
