Wow pretty major trees breaking in half!!
We did have winds in the 60 /70/ 80 mph range for 10 hours! That's why they named it a Blizzicane.
There are probably dozens of trees like this on the property, I didn't go searching for them yet. They'll need to be located and brought down. They can drop at any moment and if it lands on one of the family members walking in the woods.... enough said!
It's snowing again right now and the wind is howling too. Probably gusting to 40 / 50 mph. Here we go again? 8-(
30 and cold what to do ....... knock out a project
I know for sure here in Roch I'm ready for cut-offs and flip-flops.Snowing those big white flakes last night and this morning.I can never seem to guess it right if at this time of the yr to buy more kerosene for the heat in the shop and house.Always seem to have more than I need hanging around for the whole summer. LOL-decided if I see a ground hog,I'm just going to shoot it.The heck with all that shadow stuff.
I do remember working on a construction crew clearing a path in a woods for utilities and we had a attachment that went on the back of a back-hoe that was a huge spinning drum with spikes on it.Set that up against a tree or stump and instant wood chips. One heck of a mess through with tons of wood chips.
Maybe your best off to just get the hot chocolate brewing and set down with the channel changer in the other hand for now.
Can't do much right now, still snowing / blowing for at least another 2 hours "they" say.
Sadly, every tree in those pictures was worth maybe 200 bucks. Now they are worthless! It's pine so nobody even wants it for firewood. That BIG black walnut was worth maybe 5 grand! Now it's junk, no sawmill will touch it. I'll cut it up myself and save some of it for project wood. Maybe Stovens will teach me some woodworking? 8-)
I am bound and determined to get the motor back in the car this weekend! I'm just sick of winter right now.
Heck 34-40 I'd love to. Just think of how cool a walnut hand made dash would look! Also could make some real nice bowls out of any burl you find. Hard wood goes for a fortune around here. Walnut is my favorite to work with. It cuts great, sands beautifully and has such a deep color to it!
Guys do use hollowed out hard wood tree stumps to use for metal forming too.
I agree 100% Steve, walnut is one of the most beautiful dark woods we have, and it's quite widespread across the country. It turns beautifully, and a coat of sanding sealer before the final finish sanding will bring forth a wonderful finish. If you can find someone to slab some of the big one that split it's still worthy of being used.
I've played with a few pieces of walnut over the years. Tried to make a gunstock once.. it looked nice (from 10 feet away), the wood was awesome - the fit was terrible..
The problem with the way this fell is it tore apart the grain. so the only solid wood will be the branchs.
I'll save some and mill it down myself and make trim parts or molding or something.
If you think that walnut is worthless you haven't priced firewood lately.
And, I don't know about your neck of the woods, but around here, lots of folks like to hang around fire barrels, and for them, pine is fine.
Yeah but that tree was a treasure! Now I can't even get a decent log out of it. The pines (in this shape) are worthless around here, We harvest trees once a year, to help pay the taxes, potentially lost 30 to 40 trees, you can do the math.
And they say money doesn't grow on'em!
i love working with walnut. it's one of the easier woods to work. i use a lot of exotic wood on dashes and consoles.
Beautiful work there Shine! Thanks for the pics.
Shine that is just so nice.
