Charlie's new car

Charlie is in conn. and looking at a 76 trans am. From what he is telling me it is set up to race. The navy federal credit union requires a title for a loan to get the car. The guy seeling it to him says that in Conn. you do not need a title for a antique car. That does not seem right to me but i told Charlie that i would ask you guys. Is this conn. law? and what should charlie be looking at given the climate there. I am concerned because i know that there are some people who take advantage of military personnel. thanks guys for the help.

Barb, I don't know how they do things is Conn but as for me, "No title - - No sale" - - - I wouldn't think you needed a title for a "race" car but an"antique" is completely different -- - - especially if you are going to get license and insurance eventually - - - - keep us in the loop and best to Charlie on his search !

Here's the requirement, best I can find quickly - http://www.ct.gov/dmv/lib/dmv/regulations/166.pdf Looks to me like at a minimum Charlie is going to have to submit a surety bond to get a new title, and he may well have trouble with paragraph (a)5 which states that the vehicle is basically stock, conforming to original status of the vehicle. For a 1976 vehicle there is no good reason that the owner should not have a title, unless he took a salvage vehicle and "fixed" it to race, etc, etc. There are shyster car dealers that swarm around the gates of the military bases, and they are best avoided. In Texas I saw sawdust put in differentials, transmissions filled 100% with STP to quiet them down, and the worst was a joker that wrapped the main and rod journals of an engine with leather, bolted it back down and sold it as "rebuilt". I wouldn't consider buying a car from a used car lot anywhere near a military base unless it was a project car that was going to be torn down. I fear Charlie's about to be taken to the cleaners here.

There just isn't no way I'd buy a car without a title with the intent of legally licensing and insuring it!!!! I'd be for getting the VIN off the car and running a check on it through DMV and see if it's stolen or has some old lien against it!!!! There's a reason a car that new doesn't have a title, and I doubt if it's a good one!

Barb, tell that young man to run away from that deal as fast as he can, not only will he have a problem getting it legal in any state but he will also have a major hassle getting it on base. He would be much better off saving his money and finding a decent ride closer to home where at least you and your husband can look the car over.

Being I was young once I can see where Charlie is coming from..Nice fast car, BUT no title and he will have to drive it on base sometime he would do better to buy a nice RED Toyota. Honestly I know he'll bock but what will he do with a hot rod when hes deployed and we both know that is going to happen. No title would be a big turn off for a first car to much hassel and if its a race car how bad is it been beaten?
Sorry I went on about this but I just got a bad feeling about that car right off.

I'd also feel queasy about this deal. To many "cons", not enough "pros" in this deal.

just talked to charlie and read him everything that was posted here. I got him to think again about the car. he is not going to buy it unless the guy can produce a title. thank you all for your help. sometimes it takes people that charlie respects other than his mom to open his eyes. thanks again.

Charlie is at a very vulnerable point, but he needs to think long term. Once he finishes his school he's looking at joining a ship's company and deploying, likely for an extended period of time. Anything he buys now is going to have to be stored while he is deployed. If he doesn't make other arrangements, any car that he buys is going to be sitting in a parking lot near the port with minimal security. Same for other things that he cannot take with him on the sub, he's going to have to find a home for anything he own's when he gets orders to a ship's company. While it is tempting to buy a car, that is probably not the smartest approach, given his needs and short term future. Charlie would be a lot better off to keep his material possessions minimized, and keep it pared back for now.

:LOL: Yeah, about all you can do is ask him, "What are you going to do with _____ when you deploy for a year?" It's a real question that is easy to ignore, but it's still a real question that he'll have to deal with.

Thank him for his service to our country and am glad that he has seen the light. I don't mind buying a car without a title because I have done it twice. The process is pretty simple to get a new title but my titles were for a 40 and a 55 and there is no reason for the 76 not to have a title. I also know that there are some states that do not require titles for old cars, but a 76 does not qualify as "old".

i just talked to him. he has decided against the trans am. I told him again to think about waiting until he had a permanent duty station to think about getting a car. he told me that if he did not have a car to work on he thinks that he will go crazy. it is his way of meditation. I told him that i fully understand and to just be smart about what car he decides on. that when he ships out next year to just get a car carrier to bring it home and i will look after it until he gets back. he said that he knew i would say that. :)

Barb - as former military plus also knowing many that were, then being a father, all Charlie needs now is to find a decent 'throwaway' car for simple transportation to and from wherever he is going. He wont have enough discretionary dollars, first of all to license and insure then feed the gas tank much - and mom, I'm guessing, in this economy doesn't need to help finance his roaming around. An econobox like a Toyota Corolla will work just fine, parts are reasonable plus available in salvage yards and he will have enough money left to chase 'gasp' girls and maybe even eat out once in a while. You really don't need to know how many car 'problems' the navy kids in the next town over at the reactor school get into with cars ...........

Sorry if I come off as kinda strong, but I put my kids through college with cars and tried to keep up with maintenance during their occasional trips home. They had to pay their own registration, insurance and gas Then there were the traffic citations, both had serious crashes that required major repairs ....... but at least they were reasonably close so I could help some.

As far as Ct - one of the worst states in the Northeast as far as regulations. No title? Good Luck and Adios !!!!

You could say I'm closer to his age than I am to most or all of you. While I agree the Trans Am "race car" (probably hacked up) with no title may not be the best choice I see no problem with him having a running project to tinker with and I'd say most of you would have wanted the same for yourself at his age or you probably wouldn't be on this forum today. When I was his age I wore my parents down enough for them to allow me to spend my money to buy my '97 Camaro SS. I loved it until I wrecked it, but I respected the car and wasn't being stupid. I was happy my parents gave me a chance and if I hadn't wrecked it the '35 would probably still be covered in dust in the garage untouched. I'm sure he needs a distraction from his daily routine and if he has a little money burning a hole in his pocket I say he should go for it!

My point is

Barb, I'm guessing that regardless of what car Charlie buys he will probably register and license it at a permanent address. If that is to be in Virginia the laws, insurance requirements, etc. of that state would apply.

Our son John is career military and he uses our home as his permanent address. His duty assignments change from time to time. Charlie's situation could be the same. Correspondence relating to John's cars comes to my house, so if any local action or leg-work is required, I'm available to handle it.

in the lovely state of Georgia no title for anything twenty years or older I believe only a bill of sale. If you have a title and send it in for transfer I have been told the sate only issues a bill of sale. I remember reading on here someone came to Georgia to register their car so they could get it registered in Colorado I think how it was.
I can understand wanting a car and a certain type of car and I'm not young at all. I would have to agree ship it back home to Mom.
I thank God for young men like him keeping our freedom and making this the country it is.

It was me. Purchased the dodge in CO with no title, got it cheap. Took the bill of sale with me to GA when I went home on leave, and got GA plates. Before I left CO, I took my GA registration in to the DMV and re- registered in CO, and got issued a title.

Now I'm back in GA, so will need to re register to GA, but will be able to keep it titled

dave his dad keeps trying to talk him into a rice burner as he puts it. charlie was bragging to his new friends in boot about the monte build. so i guess now he wants a car that he can drive and modify when he has the time and money. american made. he is defintely going to pay for everythin himself except he has some buddies in new london that are going to give him half the gas money it takes to drive home for a ride to maryland. 35 ford i also understand where he is coming from. i have found out with charlie over the years that there are alot of times that the only way he can find out something is not a good way for him to go is to let him find out for himself. I just try my best to guide him gently in the saner direction when i can. Jim I have told him that it would be best to title it here if at all possible. He is now planning on shipping it home when he deploys for the first time next year. He is enjoying the navy but the newness is wearing off and he is going through A school which he says is a pain alot of times unless he is getting on the boat for training. He is really home sick and i believe that this car thing is his way of him and i staying connected through our common interest.

I should also chime in that, it is quite common in GA for seventies era car to be sold without title. Most of the ( too many ) cars I have bought and sold were un-titled.

Another thing I have figured out - it is just as satisfying to work on a car using someone else's money! Craft shop fees can add up, and speed parts are expensive. Wrenching on his buddy's car would mean he wouldn't be broke, and he could be paid in beer!

the base has 6 car bays with tools for working on cars. he is too young to be paid in beer :)

Just use the bill of sales when you buy your tag/registration and keep your Colorado title for the next sale. if you give them the title they will not send a Georgia one back. good ole jawga boy now.

I never drank any alcohol either Barb till I was divorced the first time at 29 or 30. maybe he will continue on with out it not missing a thing. hope we can keep the young ones interested in our Love for the good ole American Hot Rods.
