Syracuse 2012 - a few photos and some comment

After one of the folks here 'reminded' me that the Right Coast Nationals at Syracuse were this weekend along with a cruise in that I went to last night, got up at O dark thirty and wandered 150 miles out to that show. Since it is (was?) Friday, some of the cars hadn't shown, of course but the crowd was at least manageable. Tomorrow will be belly to butt people and a bunch more cars (saw quite a few headed that way on I-90 on the way home) - probably only 5-6000 there now.

Couple of comments - lots of the cars there now, but, and only my opinion, way too many '60s to '80s. Many were very nicely done, not my 'bag' but many - refugees from the crusher. Sloppy. Next - I didn't see much innovation or too many 'OMG, holy cow, phew' cars as I had in the past - maybe they are going to be there tomorrow. The Street Rods, the 1949 and older cars - many less then previous years though I did miss last year's show. Seems to be the trend with NSRA having to do their rolling years.

Here are a few photos. The Factory 5 exhibit has one of our members car there - Arrowhead. He said he was called on Tuesday, they made him an 'offer' - recall possibly that his car was on tour with them last fall.

Hey thanks for the pictures! There was more than a few in there that made me say Oh WOW!, looks like it was fun and not over-run with overly hot temps.

I am getting used to being disappointed with event coverage. The cars of the last few years have been depressingly boring for me, and events seem to be looking more like a "used...car...lot", than a show for hot rods and customs. {:-(

....but there were some EXCITING cars there!!! Thanks! You've restored my faith. :-)~

Also Mike - There were(are!) some beautiful cars there - but like I said, a significant number of them are survivors from the crusher or as you said, a used car lot (and to add my words, from the '70s)

Gary, I didn't fully make up my mind to go until ~8:00PM Friday when I got home from the cruise in. You can join up with Mike(34_40) and me at Burlington in Sept - I'll be there on Sat., Sept 22 (Mike you WILL be there wont you?)

Thanks for the great pics Dave, a super Saturday morning slide show with coffee!!!! Good to see something besides 'glass deuces with sbc's are actually showing up at events!!!! Looks like a lot of the cars there required some real planning and real Hot Rodding to put together!!!!! Thanks!!!!!

I just got back. Couldn't find the Factory 5 booth so I missed Arrowheads FF '34.. Some nice stuff, some not so nice stuff. Some of the newer stuff was ok, like the pair of AMC Spirit AMX's ( After owning a Rambler, I give them some respect ). It was hot and crowded as it always is but I always make the best of it. Next year I'll stick something in the show so I have a place to stash a cooler. Possibly the Rat if I ever get it finished.

Oh and Gene Winfield has a small booth set up in the back corner because of the Winfield awards, I talked with him for a min and got something signed. Seems like a nice guy.. I guess it's been going on for a few years but I never knew it ( pays to read the show schedule )

Thanks for taking time to shoot some pic's, Dave. That black '33/34 with the red work on the sides is an interesting piece - couldn't make it out in the thumbnail, but then bigger I couldn't figure it out, anyway. Waaaaay interesting paint concept.

Thanks for that link,Dave..I think you must have shot the cream of the crop..Some real nice cars there..Nice to see the 56 Mercury M100..Only ever seen pix..I know they are only a Canadian version of the F100(aren't they?),but we dont have any down here..

Matt - for Arrowheads car, inside the front door and a bit to the right of the same building Winfield was in. Yeah, the Sat. crowds are mean.

Roger - that paint was interesting to say the least. I'm surprised the picture would show it. Not anything I would do, but didn't look too bad.

Robin - that Ford Meteor was another Commonwealth vehicle (Canada/Ontario) and well done. I've said before, those '56 Fords are my all time faves

Randy - much more comfortable ride for a 300 mile day visit to the NYS Fairgrounds in my wife's 36 mpg Fusion with the a/c and some tunes and better yet, decent leg room for my 6'4"/200# aging carcass:LOL::LOL:

I must have just looked over The Factory Five display. I was in there from 1 side to the other ( It was an air conditioned building ), even the model cars.. It wasn't as crowded last year on Saturday. Years past, my dad entered his '72 C10 and parked it in an easy to get out of spot ( back lot or uncrowded alley ), and we had a place to retreat to and drinks in the cooler under the bed cover. The truck needs some work, so it's not carshow material anymore. It never really was but we could shine it up nice..

Yea, it would have been nice to meet him.. If gas wasn't so expensive, I'd have driven back up today and finished off viewing the show ( and FF display ).. I'll try to make Guptills next month, tho I probably couldn't take the old Chevy, unless I can prove it's up to the distance, but I'll try to make it anyway

I'm going to try to make it next month. Something that I've had to do with Clifton Park Town problems had messed up my schedule for June and July - Guptill's is only about 8-10 miles South.

Some more celebs of note were there as well:

Daisy Duke, aka Catherine Bach was signing autographs. Still looks dang good:D

Debbie Dunham aka Candy Clark of American Graffiti fame ( a bit long of tooth and fading but still looks good to this OF)

Dan Woods of Chop, Cut and Rebuild fame was signing as well.

Then that chopped, sectioned, shortened and otherwise screwed up Imperial that has been in several magazines was NOT drawing much of a crowd on Friday. It's, IMO, as ugly in person as it is in the rags. Not to my taste, as I do prefer the pre '49s

That's the 1 building I usually go to first, but didn't go in this year, got turned around too many times. I think the show layout changed a little cause I actually had a hard time finding my way around. I could be wrong but it seemed that way. I know the buildings don't move.. I don't remember any of the Trane portable air conditioners in years past ither, but given the heat wave, they were a welcome addition.. But I was also scouring the grounds looking for the FFR booth. I'll try to make Guptills also, but I don't know what I'v got going on yet.
