weekend projects

Well since my buddy isn't around to help with engine fitting, I decided to work on a cheap late 40's cabinet I picked up at a garage sale for 5 bucks. The guy had really cool stickers of stuff I love on it, so when he bundled the tools I had for 5 bucks, with the cabinet I had to accept the offer. I was surprized to find out it was an old Cedar chest, laminated with mahogany. So as much as it killed me to remove the stickers(big pain factor here as I love old bikes) I decided to clean it up, strip it, and refinish it for the house.
So after two days here are some shots, the top has one spot sanded out in the laminate, but a strategicly placed silver tray will hide it. It will be a new counch end table/side board. Note the final satin clear coat isn't on yet, and the miss matched color on the pulls is for me to decide whether to go with a brass finish or a gloss black.

Nice transformation - and I'm sure you know a light scuff will once again bring out the fantastic fresh cut cedar aroma!!

Yep once the outside is done, I'll hit the inside, then bring the whole thing in for a surprise when the wife gets back from New York.

As an aside I went to ebay looking for similar stickers and decals, should have left it alone. Geeze I'm at 20 bucks for half of them, but they will look nice on the old stacked tool box from Craftsman.

Yeah, me too but, when I cut the board to short.. I just can't add weld to lengthen it! 8-(

For the first time I can remember, I'll disagree with Bob, I definately like the gold.

I've got a little chest project I want to get started on in the next couple of weeks.......luckily for me it's a metal chest.

I'm one of those guys..... give me 2 pieces of metal and I can make just about anything you want......give me 2 pieces of wood and I can make sawdust and fire wood.

Thanks guys. Still undecided about the hardware. Not wild about the pulls on it. Might have to do some searching. Also not sure about the color, though yesterday I was leaning towards black!
My big project is to take some big old reclaimed 100 plus year old Doug Fir from a recent building tear dowm, and make a harvest table out of it. The timbers I got were 3 12"x 12'x 2 1/4" thick boards(with some light worming in them) for the table top, and some shorter pieces for the sides along with a 4x4 post to make some tappered legs. A guy around here used to make these using British reclaimed barn timbers, imported here, and his son would rough shape them into beautiful dining room tables. They still can be found in quite a few wineries in Napa and Sonoma, as serving tables. For 80 bucks, I felt fortunate to pick the wood up when the selection was huge!

Just finished it. It came out ok. Like the brass knob look.

Those pulls are nice looking - - - - - I tried to find a picture of the old antique swirlie/marblie/plastic ones that I remember as a kid but couldn't find anything online. Is that a wood insert in the brass pulls? I love that wood veneer also !

Mello those are the original pulls I think, the middle is hollow, so you see the cabinet thru them, seems like wood though. I chose to only put two on, as you don't need 4 for the doors, like what was originally on there. I couldn't find replacement handles/pulls with a 2 inch on center screw pattern. Very wierd spacing not redily available anymore. 34_40 thanks, it was a quick fix project that gave me some instant gratification. Need those from time to time.

New get instant gratification project while avoiding bigger projects that cost money and time!
I was walking to lunch and stumbled across this sideboard. Well made vintage late 50's to 70's not sure of dates. But 35 bucks later, and much knee pain it's getting refinished for the right spot in the house. It's well built with dove tail drawers, but there is a lot of laminate vs. solid wood, and plywood. No markings as to the maker. Anyway wanted something for the wifes collection of china, etc., so I bought it, even though I can scarcely aford the time to refinish.
First shots are how it was, then after dark walnurt danish oil(2 coats) and one coat mahogany stain, here is where we are at now.
