1Gary,
At the race the teams have two cars. The primary and the backup.
They are allowed to bring in more cars if they wreck the two that they brought.
Most teams have at least 3-5 cars for each different type of track. I.E. Superspeedways such as Daytona & Talladega, Then the 1 mile tracks and then the short tracks. A lot of the teams have different cars even for the same type of track (standard and dropped snout).
Nascar does limit how many crew member can came to the track but there are more than just the over the wall guys. The extra crew members are there just to work on the car during practice and the race if needed but only a specified amount can be in the pits on race day.
Most if not all of the guys at the track work at the shop also. Some of the over the wall crew members have regular jobs off site during the week and only crew the car on the weekends.
Most teams have 10 or more engines setting around at any time. On most race weekends the teams are limited to using only one engine unless something happens to it. It can only be replaced with the approval of Nascar. Same with the cars. If a car is wrecked Nascar has to approve going to a backup car. When this approval is done the car has to start at the back of the field no matter where they qualify.
Now when I say most teams I mean the bigger teams like Hendricks, Rouch, Penske and the likes. Some of the smaller teams have only maybe 3-6 cars only. These are for the three different types of tracks, superspeedway, intermediate & short tracksBug
