charlie is in the navy.

My son charlie signed up this week with the deps for the navy. he goes in august 1st. his career is a machinist on a sub specializing with the weapons systems. I am proud of him but scared at the same time. typical mom. he will be stationed in the north east.

Back in '68 I saw the writing on the wall relative to the draft and I was lucky enough to get into the Navy. IMO Charlie has made an excellent choice, and if nothing else he will learn to be responsible for himself and will have the opportunity to learn skills that can carry him into a career later. My oldest son followed me into the Navy as an Aviation Machinists Mate, learned jets (F-14's in Japan), then B School for the big minesweeper helo's where he learned turbo's and finished out in Corpus Christi. He chose to get out after 6 and now works flight ops keeping a fleet of a dozen planes going for a corporate fleet. Not sure I would like subs, personally, but Charlie will learn things there that can't be found in other places. Give him a hug, and tell him we appreciate his service to the country. I'm proud of him, too.

Way to go Charlie, do not worry Mom he leaves as a boy and a man will return. The military was the best job I ever had.

thanks guys and i will be sure to tell him all the great things you guys have had to say. he signed up for 8 with 4 active and 4 reserve. he said that he will see how things will go from there but he wants to do at least 20.

I was one of them draft dodgers like Roger and did the Air Force deal..... It was kind of a dead heat for me deciding between the Air Force and the Navy, my probation officer cast the deciding vote when he discovered the Air Force could get me out of town the quickest!!!!!!!!:LOL::LOL::LOL:

Tell Charlie congrats on a very wise decision!!! Hope he's also looking at all the good programs they have for stashing away a bunch of (tax free)money for education when he gets out??????

i hope so dave. he got a call from the air force as his asvab scores were really high. but he chose the navy. he is looking forward to the many navy programs that they have to offer.

Barb - best of luck to him. I did my time with Uncle's army - and looking back, wasn't really too bad of a deal. And a submariner, I've, for some reason, gotten to know and become friends with quite a few at GE plus their naval propulsion training is done about 10 miles from where I live At West Milton, NY

53 years and fourteen days ago, this then still wet behind the ears seventeen year old stood in front of a guy with a bunch of gold stripes on his sleves and stuff that they called scrambled eggs on his hat, and raised his right hand and committed to six years in "Uncle Sam's Canoe Club"; h@@@, I didn't even know what the word commitment meant, then, but I sure did six years later. I believe it was one of the best things I ever did.

Do they get to water ski behind the subs like behind the destroyers???

Barb-the sub guys are treated the best in the Navy.The Navy understands those chosen are something special.Tell him congrats on acceptance and like everyone else I thank him for his service.

You have to be proud Barb, wish him luck.The oldest step son leaves port in the AM tomorrow for 3 weeks training. 10 years ago I tried talking him into going in the Navy but he didn't see it now hes ready and seems to be enjoying it.. May all our men and women come home when there done.

I believe every youth should go through basic training because it does help them to grow up. Thank him for his decision to serve our country.
