Doesn't make sense

I was in a parking lot in front of a grocery store that has a number of handicap parking spots.I have two stents in my heart,diabetics,aesthetics and refuse to get a pay the doctor type pass to park in those spots.They have a wheelchair pictured on the placks and in my mind that makes sense.I watched a couple not being able to get one of those spots in the parking lot getting trying to get into their van as a lady pulled into a spot next to me and jump out of her car.

Kind of got me going.I pointed out to her how all those spots where full with fake reasons.The logic is IF they get out of their cars in those spots,walk around in the store,and then WALK out to their cars,they are able bodies.Logic running over convenience.

Well rant over.It is a minor issue that I think shows a larger picture of how self serving selfish people we have become all trying to abuse a system that started out to help out people that really needed it.Thing is again,if you can get out of a car and walk around a huge store to shop,there is no reason for a person to use a handicap spot.Those people have a mental problem and not a physical issue.A weakness in the link of who we are.:mad:

:eek: Don't get me started, Gary. I do have "wheelchair" plates on my cars, and both of us are rather thoroughly broken, but we seldom take advantage of the privilege the plates accord us. We do grouse about other folk who will do anything to get into a handicapped parking spot, and especially those who park in a van only spot without a van. I think the laws should be tightened up and more strongly enforced, but I seem to be in a minority; most people don't seem to care one way or the other.:mad::(:(

What can I say Gary, when you see big old Harley with a wheelchair plate (and we have several around here) you got to figure the system is broke.

Personally, I'm on 40% disability (VA) and there are days when it's not a lot of fun to move a round very much but I figure as long as I can still get around and build cars I'm not ready for the tag yet.

From my point of view,if I say something to the abuser,one at a time I might get them to grow a conscious.

Oh boy. Your making me feel bad now. I have a prosthetic leg above the knee. My problem is walking. I do use them. Not if I don't have to. I won't go to the big stores. I can't walk a block without getting soar. But it does bother me when it looks like someone doesn't need the spot. It gets me when they don't have a plaque to park in those spots. You never know what their handicap is. I try not to show my limp on the way into a store, but you can tell somethings up when I leave the store. I guess we should not judge. I don't ride my Harley much anymore. What's a guy to do?

John-not talking about people who really need those spots.Another time I watched a guy get out of his car and I said I don't see a wheelchair.He told me he had died twice in a heart attack.I ask how he feels now??.He said great,no problem.Sooooooooo-I told him that being the case,you see my point don't you??.Yeah he just walked away red faced.The real disappointment was he was wearing a Marines hat.Don't know in his case how the heck 15 feet makes that big of a difference and if it does,he shouldn't be out and about anyways.

There are people my age that feel a entitlement just because.There are also people my age who are well aware of their surroundings(aware of other people's needs),have self respect,and most of all pride to determine honestly what their needs are or not.

I hear you. One thing I do is if there is a spot next to the handicap one, I will take that one because I know someone worse off could use it. My thing makes it so I don't go to many places anymore. You would think that since I do still ride a Harley that I should be able to do a lot more. I can't ride a bicycle anymore. On the motorcycle I don't have to peddle. It is surprising how much hotrod stuff I can do out of my wheelchair. LOL!
I'm headed to the fair tonight to see an old rocker, Ted Nugent. Walkin's gonna suck.

But the thing about it is if you saw me standing there without knowing that I'm missing a leg, you would wonder why I'm parked in the handicap spot. I'm just saying that you would not know the reason why I needed to park in that spot. They have come a long ways in making things alot better. Over 40 grand for the leg. Not perfect, but it sure makes a difference.

Worst thing I do is part out a ways but sometimes do go in the exit only doors which makes a shorter trip out( Menards,Lowes,etc)

Another related parking event is the people who will drive the lot for 15 minutes to find an empty spot 32 feed closer to the door. MY theory is that parking lots should have zones....skinny folks get rewarded with a close-in spot. The more pork, the further out you have to park.....the major pork has to park waaaaaay out by the highway....

actually , being a farm boy, I look for a shady spot!!!

My wife is not in a wheel chair - yet - but after two back surgeries and a hip repair, she does need that spot. Sure, she can walk around the store if she has a shopping cart to lean on, but an extra 50 or 100 yards to park elsewhere just isn't in the cards. What actually trips my relief valve, though, is when someone decides that they know better. A couple of years ago, I heard a guy comment as he walked by, "she doesn't look handicapped to me." I told him that until he had a medical degree, he could just STF up, and if he did, by chance, have a medical degree, he could still STF up. Then there was a guy who walked up to me as I was taking some packages back to my car while my wife was still in the store. His idea of being a good citizen was asking me if I was pregnant. I caught his meaning, then told him that if he had asked me in a civil manner, I would have explained, but since he was being a prick, he could kiss my ass.

Nothing against any of you guys, because you make good points and I applaud your choices. However, sometimes the gate swings the other way, and I'm too old and grumpy to take it anymore.

By the way, do you know how to tell a handicapped space here in Italy? It's easy. An able-bodied Italian is parked in it.

It's a very touchy subject we probably shouldn't talk about. We each have our own opinion. But I know what your saying. Sometimes it ticks you off. I was at the post office not long ago. Didn't take that spot because there was one next to it. While I was coming out this guy parked in it, jumped out and ran inside. No sticker or plaque. I want to say something or even do something. Ofcourse it would have started a hassle. But I figured I was better off not getting my blood to boil because it's to hard on a persons health to get upset.
I know a lot of us need to relax and take it easy on ourselves. We only live once.

Jack-could you tell us how you really feel??.;)I forgot to say I have a disc removed in my back.All too many(sorry about your wife) have a reason that isn't valid.A trend of our society where we as a country has gotten soft.If you look at Pat as a example who got burnt,that tough old bird(sorry Pat)was out in the shop in no time.It's that we lack that built what we have now.Too many on disability,too many abusing parking spots,too many liberal doctors,too many excuses.I don't know if it is the genes,but my oldest was in a crash with his bike.He had a broken collar bone with a rod inserted,really messed up knees and we had to hold him down to keep him from returning to work the day after he got out of the hospital.(really I made a call to his boss to kill that idea)For as along as I can remember he has always been like that.

The best thing to say to the obviously able bodied folks who part in the marked space is "well, stupidity IS a handicap"

There are many people who have endurance problems and such who have the tags....it is pretty obvious when someone is cheating when they drive up and pull the tag out of their visor and attach it to the mirror.

Three months after my leg was cut off like a hot knife through butter, I jumped on the bike to tell the pharametics at the fire station thank you. Just a way to tell myself I wasn't done.
I asked GOD for one thing while I was in the hospital those three days. To be a Grandfather before I die. This was 12 years ago and I have been blessed with seven grandkids. God can stop playing a joke on me anytime. To many birthdays to remember.
Just thought I would try and break the ice here. Life is good.

Man you have NO IDEA how pi$$ off I get when I see that going on I've seen people do that and ask are you handicaped you get thatIS IT ANY OF YOUR BUSINESS or YOU A COP. Van pulls in 6 kids get out one was driving asked don't you see that sign? Answer "Yep but my mom parks there all the time ".....They gave me a tempory tag when they replaced my knee. I never used it as the Dr said exercize it. There is yet another thing that gets me going people who park under the NO PARKING FIRE LANE sign and wait for someone to come out. I see this all the time as my wife works for one of those big box stores. She said the police won't right tickets because the store dosen't want to get a bad rep. and up set the customers
