Kurt, it's a shame this would happen on a new 'frig but the sister-in-law was only trying to help. Before attempting to repair the damage your best bet would be to contact the manufacturer to see what's on the S.S. surface, some will have a clearcoat over the S.S. If all else fails trying to refinish the surface, you can always order just a replacement door.
