that was sooooooo dumb he drove it into the marbles 300 feet from the finish line.......ted
Has to be one of the worst rookie CHOKES ever!
In his defense, he was going around a lapper....Someone should have been on the radio telling him to back off, he didn't have to go around the 2nd place car was a long ways back.... It always looks so easy on the tube!
But anyway, that's why the call them rookies!
Dave. I agree. His spotter should have given him a heads up on upcoming lapped traffic and the amount of lead he had. Going by his post race comments, he thought second place car was very close. Had he known he could have timed his entry much better. There was tremendous pressure on Hildebrand at that instant for sure. Such a shame, but that is part of racing. There won't be many good chances for him to win the Indy 500 like he had there.
Funny I posted about this yesterday too. My coworker's know the rookie. They said he went to school with their sons. They were thrilled he placed so well, and kept it together enough to cross the finish line and take second place, also avoiding any other cars getting off the track. All in all a rookie kid taking second place is pretty outstanding! Glad he and nobody else got hurt as a result of the accident.
Here is a link to a video clip of the finish. Pretty cool race.
