I'm not a defender of insurance companies per se, afterall, I made my living for a number of years dealing across the table from them. But the lesson we learned is these guys don't do ANYTHING without a reason. Most often it's because loss ratios have shifted in a given market, be it in a geographical location or a class of coverage. As an example, if I wanted to buy earthquake insurance on my home today it would cost a bunch more than say 6 months ago because we are located on the "Ring of Fire" that with quakes in Chile, New Zealand, and Japan it looks like the pattern is headed clockwise around the ring. These guys have to manage risk, and if they have to pay out they need to take in. What Roger mentioned is that each state sets it's own standards for coverage that the insurance companies must abide by to do business in any given state. Which means you can't realisically compare your policy costs to someone in another state or community, even if the covered factors appear to be the same.
That all being said, you owe it to yourself to comparison shop different companies to see who's most competitive..........just compare apples to apples.
I use Grundy but I have never had a claim so my opinion really doesn't hold water except for the rates being easy to live with.

To add to what Bob said, I found that in my area the coverage from the specialty companies (Haggerty, Chrome, Grundy, others) varied a LOT in the restrictions on miles and usage (from virtually no restrictions to only covering to and from club meetings, car events, etc (no errands, etc). I would recommend that as you do your comparison be sure that the policy limitations fit your specific needs. If you use your car as a secondary/pleasure vehicle, taking it to the hardware store, grocery store or to get an ice creme on Saturday night you want to be sure that your policy is not limited to car club events, etc. Also, if you peruse the thread I linked in earlier you'll see that though they told me they were only interested in my driving record, I got turned down due to recent family history, though every claim was a minor parking lot bump/scrape. In a nutshell, be sure you compare apples to apples as Bob said, but it may not be an easy task. Ask lots of questions.

I have Grundy and had a claim last summer . Quickest and best service I have ever had with an ins. com. Acually paid more than the estimate I had from the body shop . $40,000.00 replacement About $325.00 here in Wa .
I like The Hartford’s classic car insurance. They also do my regular home and car insurance.

I'm thinking of going to Grundy when my current policy expires in June. Dennis Gage had Grundy on a segment of his show and the rates he was quoting, the lack of restrictions, and the agreed value impressed me. I've seen various posts also where people did have a claim with them and had no hassles or problem getting enough to fix or replace the car.

Yup, but after Saturday, if things go as planned, the Tri-5 will be someone else's baby but after we relocate and see what the Wiffy's health is going to do then I may get back into something like an inline sixer in an early light weight skin. Gotta get moved first.
