I am so sorry, I am an animal lover, always have been, always will be, and know just how you feel. When the time comes, though, you have to think of it, as the ultimate act of love, to not let the animal suffer.
I know it doesn't make YOU feel any better, though, I've been through it a number of times, and the tears are starting again right now, just thinking about it.
Kitty is now out of pain, young again, and playing and just generally being a cat again.
I'm sorry for you and your family.
