    Scary Story!

Talking to a neighbor who has two homes one on a lake. He (82 years old)and his wife went to the grocery and while she shopped he waited in the car. Well she got what she wanted and went back to the car and opened the door and a 3 foot water moccasin fell out the door. She jumped back and started screaming, a guy saw what happened came over and got him out of the car. The snake crawled under the car and into the engine compartment on top of the trans. bell housing. They could not get the snake out so they drove home! He told me he thinks its gone. Not me I am getting a different ride!!

Water Moccasins are just NUTS. Years ago we fished on some local rivers and they would be up on limbs of trees overhead of your boat, and we've even had one come down out of a tree and start climbing over the transom of the boat. I hit the starter and burned out, leaving him in our wake! Most snakes try to avoid people, but not Water Moccasins, they will come after you.

A friend of mine was hunting on the Santee River in South Carolina (or NC, not sure which) in a Duck Boat. A Water Moc dropped out of a tree into his boat, so he freaked out and shot the snake with his 12 gauge........blew a hole in the bottom of the boat.

    I HATE all snakes!!!!!!!!

Yep, they are. We.ve had them come up to our boat and start eating the fish we have on a stringer, hanging over the side, and they DON'T scare away easily. We've hit them with oars and fishing rods and they just keep eating the fish! They are just NUTS!!

Here is what Google says about them:

    Water Moccasin
This is a heavy-bodied aquatic snake that inhabits the southern US. They are fairly common in Florida. This one was caught in Orlando. They are members of the pit viper family. Most pit vipers are rattlesnakes that live on dry land, but the Water Moccasin does not have rattles, and it lives in water and swampy areas. This snake isn't as agressive as many of the rattlesnakes, but it'll certainly bite if you get too close and it's agitated (or if it senses your heat), and the bite is horrible. It's lethal from a larger snake, and is sure to destroy your tissue and leave you without whatever body part got bitten. Be very careful around this snake.

There was one of those idiot survival guys on Animal Planet or Discovery in the Everglades I think. One water moccasin for every square yard (Don knows). Anyway this guy is walking around finding them and picking them up. Thats crazy!

Just watch where you step! There is an old saying about Texas "If it don't bite you, sting you, or stick you, it's a rock"!

I was in the Marine Corps with a Cajun and when we would go out in the boonies at Camp Pendleton he'd always slip away at night. He loved to hunt rattlesnakes and at that time, 64-65, Pendleton was full of them. He'd come back with 2 or 3 shaking the rattles which would cause all of our dark skinned brothers to haul azz.
He'd skin them and cook little fillets over an open fire. Not bad tasting, but a little greasy for my liking.

Every time I think about moving from the city to the country, this is the kind of story that changes my mind. I'm fine with spiders, but cannot tolerate a snake.

Now, I understand that in Australia and perhaps New Zealand as well, you blokes have Funnel Web spiders that are fatal and will attack, so I might have to re-think spiders also.

I have just done a goggle search on the funnel web spider and it looks like Australia is now off my bucket list of places I would like to visit. I honestly don't thing we have anythig here in NZ that would kill you like gators, snakes or spiders like you fellas have.

Hee-hee!!! I love snake stories. I think I might have a hard time with "moccasins", though. I've been around snattlerakes, buzzworms, rattlers all my life, and never seen one try to get into or on my bike, truck, or whatever, like Don says about those mocs - yeah, that's just NUTS; that would get exciting in a hurry.

Whip, no need to put off your trip, they won't chase you down and eat you, just make your heart race a wee bit, if, and that is a long if, you come into contact with one. There are probably some boys down in Texas who'd even take you out hunting those big Texas rattlers; they have several roundups down there each year, or at least, they used to - the PETA people might have put a stop to them, for all I know.

And, regarding Australia: they have what may be the worlds deadliest snake there, a Brown Adder, or some such thing - and I hear that they can be quite aggresive, too.
