How well do you remember that DAY?

I am posting this thread as a rememberance and not a "rant" thread !

A place to share how the attack on September 11, 2001 effected you and your memories of that fateful day !

"I am sure that I experienced almost every Emotion that a man could go thru on that day. Anger, Sorrow, Nausea, Fear, Bewilderment, Anxiety and mostly Love for my fellow Countrymen and our Allies.

I had two good friends that lived and worked in downtown NYC and I could not get them on their cell phones so some Panic played a part as well. When I finally heard from one and he said that he had spoken to our mutual friend and she was on the Manhattan bridge when she witnessed the smoke and fire coming from the WTC so they turned around and started listening to the broadcast on the Radio.

I remember reflecting back on the day JFK was shot and listening to the Radio broadcast but I also remembered thinking that "today" was the worst that I had experienced in my lifetime.

My prayers and heartfelt condolences still go out to the Families of those fallen Heroes and innocent Civilians of 9 years ago!"

I was sitting in a resource room ( small study hall ) in 7th grade junior highschool. when the principal came on the loudspeaker and announced all teachers to turn the televisions onto CNN.. I remember that day well

Building a addition on a home in Bristol IN. the home owner came out and told me . We both went in and watched in disbelief

I was in the hospital and was just "coming to" when I heard the nurses say that a second plane had just hit the WTC. I got home later that day and watched for hours in complete horror that some nut cases could do that in the USA.

I was getting my day organized, and watching the news as I passed by the TV. I watched in disbelief as they showed the first tower getting hit! I woke my wife up, and we watched for the next few hours, as the drama unfolded. ...the second tower getting hit... people leaping from windows to their death... emergency personnel powerless to stop it... a plane into the Pentagon... and in a remote field (...thanks to people with real stones)!!! {:-(

No one had to tell us this was a major event in US history. I was so impressed with the grittiness and "backbone" of Bush, as he became a real "Commander-In-Chief". I actually voted for him the second term, because I thought we needed a military leader who would not hesitate nor blink! Heaven help us if this happened today!

I am baffled that BinLadin is still breathing. I'm also baffled that people think you can defeat an enemy in over 60 countries overnight. I have lost family in the ongoing war, and ashamed that the "pantywaists" in this country think we have done enough to stop it from happening again ...and again. Humankind has never, and is not capable o,f living without wars. Some people in power simply live in a fairytale, believing we can. I for one am deeply concerned.

BTW... vote in November. }:-(

I was at a power plant construction site in French Camp, MS, in the middle of a contract discussion with a piping fabricator when one of the superintendents came in with the report of the first plane, and shortly was back with the report of the second and that it was a confirmed terrorist attack. We had flights out that evening, but quickly determined that we were not going to fly anytime soon, even though the initial reports were "possible overnight delays". I called Avis and told them we would be turning in their rental car in Kansas City, and we headed north, not really knowing if we would find gasoline on the way. Pulled into a closed airport about 6am, and the Avis bus took us to the parking lots where we had parked. It was a very strange overnight drive, but we had no problems.

Like others I doubt I will ever forget that day and night.

So well expressed Melloyello, You summed up all the emotions that I personally felt on that shocking day. I was staying in a motel in Whangerei (my second home) for my week of selling and had just got back in from my early morning run and was about to do my situps when I heard the news on the radio, I couldn't believe what I had just heard so turned on the TV and was transfixed to the screen for most of the morning. My prays still go out to those that lost love ones.
I agree with you also Hotrodpaint about the length of time it has and is going to take to fight this world war on Terrorism and I am humbled by the soldiers who are prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

I received this via e-mail, and it is appropriate to the subject being discussed. We fly the flag every day, but for those who don't perhaps consider flying it Saturday. The message:

THE PROGRAM:

On Saturday, September 11th , 2010, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States . Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this ninth anniversary of one our country's worst tragedies. We do this honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms.

In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.

Action Plan:
So, here's what we need you to do ...

(1) Forward this email to everyone you know (at least 11 people). Please don't be the one to break this chain. Take a moment to think Back to how you felt on 9/11 and let those sentiments guide you.

(2) Fly an American flag of any size on 9/11. Honestly, Americans should fly the flag year-round, but if you don't, then at least make it a priority on this day.

It was early morning on the west coast and as I heard the news on the radio, I told my wife, “I think we’ve been attacked.” As the details came across the news, I was sickened to find out that I was correct. We have dear friends in New York – both of who were in the City when the plane struck the World Trade Center – and we agonized for days before getting a call through to them and finding out they were okay.

Several days into the nightmare my grief turned to absolute anger and I called the Air Force recruiter and asked what the chances were of my coming back into the service. He very graciously replied, “Sir, you’ve paid your dues and while I’m sure we could use your talents and skills, you’re a few years past our cutoff date, but thank you for your willingness and there’s no doubt in my mind that you are still one fine leader – I would have been proud to serve in your command.”

My heart is still heavy for those who have lost a family member. I ride with the Patriot Guard and while I detest this war and hate having to bury our sons and daughters – I am proud to strap leather and escort our heroes to their final rest. I am humbled to stand behind a military honor guard as they give a 21 gun salute and the bugler wails that mournful tune and we place a precious loved one in the ground. I like it when it rains as it washes away the tears that come freely to a lot of us old guys. I’ve been blessed to hug a lot of parents and hope that our sharing in their grief lightens their load.

My sincerest prayers for and heartfelt thank to those of you on this site who have served as well as the folks of those still in harm’s way – God’s speed – and may they come home safely and soon.

I remember that I turned on the TV while getting ready to visit my wife who was in hospital and was absolutely shocked and horrified at what I saw. The first tower was burning and then I watched as the second plane hit. It didn't seem real and the initial estimates that there could be up to 30,000 people in the buildings (thank God that was not true) made it even more horrific.
It became even more personal when the hospital (in Canada BTW) sent my wife and many other patients home to clear beds for possible injured survivors. Seems the hospital is part of an emergency plan for the eastern part of North America and had to be ready for an overflow of patients.

I was serving a congregation in TX at the time and was in my office when my wife called and told me. I moved a tv into my office so I could watch and try to get some work done. About 20 minutes later, I got a call and had to go to the hospital because a parishioner was dying.

The clips for my flag broke late last year in heavy wind and haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. I'm thinking it will be fixed first thing in the morning.

Both of those days are etched in my memory..........9-11 and the day JFK was assassinated. On the morning of 9-11 I was watching the today show and they broke in to report that a small plane had hit one of the towers. They then went to the street and you could see the tower burning. I told my GF, who was getting ready to leave for work about it, and a few minutes later as she was walking to her car I had to go out on the porch and tell her ANOTHER plane had just hit the second tower.

When I got to work that morning I remember everyone being in shock and standing around a tv. I can't ever remember being that angry and wanting us to turn the entire mid east into a parking lot with some of our nukes. If they would have let me push the buttons that morning I would have done it without hesitation.:mad:

That morning changed so much about the world, and America in particular. :(

I was working the second shift and got to bed around 0100. My Mom (who lives in Ohio) called and woke me around 0630 and said WE ARE BEING ATTACKED very franitically! The second Boeing 767 had not hit the WTC yet. I rubbed my eyes looked outside and thought you're nuts Mom. I then turned on the T.V. to the horrible site we all have seen so many time since. Minutes later the second 767 slammed into the WTC, and then it was very clear what was going on. After watching T.V. endlessly for many hours, I got a call from my Supervisor not to come to work, as I was working at Oakland International Airport at the time. The Airport was on lockdown. NOBODY was a permitted to be on the flight line except the police, and they weren't messing around. It was a terrible period in our nations history. I too, still feel the pain for all the families affected on that faitfull day. Our nation will never forget, and never be the same. It is true we lost some of our innocents that day. I remember telling my wife that day we were witnessing history. Just the wrong kind. Unfortunately, hatred brings out the absolute worst in human beings.

Tomorrow 9/11/10, I will be taking my family to the Airshow in Mather, CA and I will be handing out many thanks to our troops. Oh yeah, and see our military in action!

I was helping a friend in Auckland catch up with his workload for the week,and remember getting a phone call from Lynda,my wife,who had heard about it on the news,so we turned on the tv,just in time to watch the second plane plow into the second tower...I was absolutely horrified,,and I thought then of all the innocent people who died for some bunch of twisted bloody terrorists idea of glory...It has indeed changed the way a lot of us think about Muslims,,even down here,as that day has had repercussions all over the world..and will continue to for a very long time..

I was overseeing a pipeline river crossing in KC MO. The company had told me that I would be out of the job after the project was finished, so I wasn't all that inclined to go to work early. I was watching the news when the report about the first tower came in. I saw the second plane hit the tower on live TV. I had no doubt about what was happening.

9/11 was one of the reasons I went to work for the DoD after my company so unceremoniously ushered me out the door.

I'm working for the DoD/Navy in Naples currently. Here's the American flag flying from my balcony.

When I had the shop I'd usually get there around 5:30 in the morning, nice time to get things done without interuption. My shop manager usually got there around 6:00. Shortly after he got in his wife called and said something like "a plane hit a WTC building in NY." First though was "oh, why would someone be flying that low in the city to have run into a building?". Punched up the internet and started reading and it took awhile for the story to sort out. Then the second hit and speculation ran wild.

I wish blown31 were right about the never forget thing, but sadly there are too many who have.

As for flag flying, I've had one up everyday since, and it will be that way until.............I wish I knew.

i was watching the morning news. it was right after the first tower was hit. i could not believe my eyes when i saw the second plane. i woke up my husband who was at the time working the night shift. he got up and watched it with me until time for him to go to work. because some of the attacks occured here in virginia we went into immediate state of emergency. our local bases jets were all in the air and the national guard 1/2 mile right up the road block the main road with barbed wire and armed guards. I went to school and got both of my children out and brought them home. we were terrrified. it was not until late that afternoon that we could take a breath. by then the jets had returned to base. the silence was deafning. I went outside and sat on my steps to just comtinplate what had occured. Then the elementary school age kids in the neighborhood got a small baseball game going in my neighbors yard. As i sat watching them i realized that even though i knew that nothing would be the same after what had happened I also knew that we would be fine and come out of this. You can do what you want to us but it will not change us. That is america to me.

I was taking my son to school & was listening to the radio.
He asked me what was going on & I thought they were talking about the 1st time they tried to bomb the towers. Then I went home & turned the TV on, my jaw hit the floor.
When I picked Joe up he told me wished he was 18 so he could join up & go over & kill the SOB's that did that to all those people.
Well as many of you know Joe is now 5yrs into the Marines, is a Sergent & is now training in Force Recon.
That day replays & lives w/in not only his heart & mind everyday but mine also....joe

11SEP01 was a Tuesday. I was taking the wife to work on Wednesday (I believe), and, as we were exiting the Overland Parkway onto 95th street, the traffic was stopped, and a column of tanks, HUMVEES, Jeeps and APCs rumbled by with flags flying. People got out of their cars and cheered, horns were honking, and everyone was waving.

Unfortunately, we have lost the momentum.

On the other side of the coin, we're still here and most of "them" are living in caves with dirt floors, not knowing when a Hellfire might drop in their teacup.

Fox News Channel has been showing lots of footage from that Day and some of it is hard to watch.

I remember welding on a customer's car and having the tv on in the shop..............disbelief of what was happening would be an understatement!!.
I remember that night looking at the sky and not seeing any air traffic flying over,that was really eerie, because at large amount of Europe-US traffic travel's over us.

I had just delievered a load of fuel down in Seabring Florida.
I got in my truck and when I started it up the news was on.
I am thinking it was on the weekend because there was no
traffic on the road, so it must have been Saturday.
I started listening as I drove up the road. Anyway the
anouncer then stated that a second plane just hit the
other tower,Right away I knew we were under attack.
I called my dispatcher and asked if they were listening
to the news. They said yes that they were watching it on TV.
They rest of the day was like a bad dream after that.
I spent the next week trying to get in touch with my
little brother who was a hospital administrator in Los Alamos,
New Mexico. He got pulled in to big some meetings with the
government and millitary in case of more attacks.
I am sure we all know what was invented there.

I got the call from my wife as I was over in Malaysia working. What a heart felt moment after hearing the devastating news. Old GLORY flies at my place 24-7. What a beautiful sight it is under the lights at night.

I remember it well, along with a few others; some things ya' just don't forget.

That brings up a point, Buzz, I wonder if it is ok to leave Old Glory out at night NOT illuminated?

Sorry for the late response but thought this was worth posting anyway.

I used to work for a large financial company that has headquarters across west 7th street from WFC in NY. I was to be on a flight to NY on that morning, but the week prior it was decided that I did not need to go. On 091101, I was working in my Minneapolis office when a co-worker ran into the office to tell me that there was a problem in NY. I happened to have a TV in my truck that day so I went to the parking ramp to get it. At one point, I had over a dozen people in my office watching updates. My NY co-workers were trying to get home. They used every form of transportation possible (walking, running, Boat, Subway, Train, Taxi).... Some co-workers finally made it home 8 hours after they left the office. Some had called me as they were escaping, they couldn't call home as the network was backed up, but they could call out. I collected their home information and called for them telling spouses that everything was fine and they were on their way. The weeks and months following 09/11, I was a point person in the organization as they were trying to work remote and I was in my Minneapolis office. In December of 01, I went to NY for the first time since September. I saw the hole and was awstruck. While the company I worked for did lose some people, I didn't personally know any of them.

Yes, I fly my flag proudly every day both before and since that date.

Mello Yellow the flag needs to be illuminated at night. IC2 thanks for sharing the rules. The flag deserves the respect that are laid out in the rules.
