Got started on the Body of my 70 Ford pick up.

Got my son home and got him to sand the bottom 4 or 5 inches all the way around the bottom of the truck. He ground all the molding clips off first since the molding is not going back on anyway. The two rust whole's that I knew were behind the molding quickly turned in to 5 hole's after the paint was sanded off. As much as I don't want to take the truck down to bare metal I think it has to be. The top coat of blue paint was applied over the origanal
yellow paint with out any prep work it looks like. The top paint is chipping and flaking off all over the truck. Also either paint was put on very thick because just as soon as you touch it wih the DA sander it's through the blue paint and half way through the yellow. Though that should make it easier to strip it down to bare metal. Like I said the strip around the bottom of the truck is alrady down to bare metal, so we will cut out the rust and treat the surrounding area with some Skyco Ospho. Then we will sand it off and do that a couple of times. Monday I will have to go and pick up some sheet metal to weld back in. Then we will throw some Dura bond over all the molding holes and the welded in plates and finish sanding the rest of the truck down.
Right now we only have two other parts the realy need fixed that I know of.
One is right on the body line of the bed where it looks like something heavy hit it, from inside the bed. That looks like a easy fix. The front hood has a wriple in it, on a body line. I think this is the one, that will try our skills.
Anyway we made good progress on the real fist day of working on it.

Wow Kurt that is good progress. It helps to have a friend or Dad for inspiration! Post some pics when you get a chance.

For the most part beside the parts already mentioned the truck is pretty straite for being
40 years old. Not alot of dings or dents in it tob be straitened out, though I could have some more hidden stuff below the paint to be seen yet. I would think that we have already uncovered the worst of it now though, being that the bottom 5 inches is alrady to bare metal. Once we get the rust holes fixed we will dura glass those along with the molding clip holes and move on panel by panel looking for other inperfections to fix.
I'll start taking some photo's to post for you guy's.

It must be a buzz for you and your son to be able to get into the truck again and accomplish some work on it,good on you,keep it going, I am envious of you for been able to get out in the garage. Yes you know we like photos.:cool:

Yes Kurt piccies always appreciated..We put ours on photobucket,which automatically resizes them,then put them on the forum from there..Just dont move them while on photobucket,that is, create another album to put them in,as they disappear from the forum..:eek:

Take it easy on the project, Kurt, hate to see it put you back on the injured reserve list!!!!! Instead of thinking of the dings and dents as problems, just see them as a body improvement opportunity!!!!!
