well they make every body and inner floor and brace part for it . how good are you at hanging steel:D not to long ago a guy had one were the roof line was siting down on the frame if you have a good roof line and some front cowl you can fix them but $$$$$$ how bad do you want to:D

The roof has an area in the front above the windshield that has been caved in. It is a lot worse then it looks. Fot $3,000 I could put that in a 55 Chevy that I've had for 25 years and it's in better shape. Someone with a ton of money could fix it. Now if it was a convertible it would be more tempting.

No engine, trans, glass, interior, every panel would need lots of work. I thought $300 would be high but the frame and rear end may be worth that.Quote:

Classic car like that to buy the trim parts after all the sheet metal work was done could put you in the poor house.Those parts are big money.
Pat, I bought a 49 Ford for $350 and it is ten to one better then the 57. I thought he must be joking but when he has title by the $3,000 I don't think he is kidding. He has an 86 Cutlass for $1,500 next to the 57 that would be a better buy.

Pass. As much as I hate to see any old car not brought back to life, it has to make sense financially and work wise. I see cars on forums all the time where the guy starts with something none of us would attempt, and sometimes they end up being a really nice car. But IMO it is so much better to start with one that is fairly solid because once you buy all the floors and patch panels you need you usually end up with a lot more money in the car than the nice one cost initially.
The other problem is that rust comes back. No matter how well you think you cut and grind all of it out, some of that cancer hides and after a while those tell tale bubbles start popping up under your nice new shiny paint.
Plus, the owner of this 57 has been watching too much Barrett Jackson. :D

I agree with everybody that have already post an opinion. If you had the time and skill to do all the frame off panelwork yourself you would still spend so much on purchasing the missing parts to complete the car it wouldn't make sense. As you mentioned Richard you already have a '55 that doesn't require as much work. Keep that on the back burner for when you tirer of that Ford...:LOL:

That has got to be the rustiest old pile of donkey do-dos I have seen lately...Even considering the 57 2dr h/top a guy brought in from New York a few years ago...This car went to Magoos Street Rods in Masterton for a going over,and ended up with just about every panel being replaced,and then sat on an Art Morrison frame...but what a transformation...:cool::eek:

There are lots of post tri-5s in much better condition for that kind of buck.
So many times you see tri-chevies, merc/lead sleds, dueces with those kinds of numbers just because of who they are not WHAT they are.
I wouldn't want the car to try to fix it but if he would drop one 0 I would give $300 for the car. 15 years ago a 57 rear end was going for $100. The rocket’s are with at least $30 each, the hood could be saved as well as the trunk lid, the dash could be sold for $75 to $100, the front bumper is good enough to be rechromed or some people paint them so that's worth at least $100. The rest of the car there could be some areas cut for patch panels. The wheels and tires could be worth $100. The frame would be worth $300 with the rear end included cleaned up and painted so for parts you could make out if he would drop it down to $300 I wouldn't go any higher. Even at that it would be a lot of work to get maybe $600 or $700 over if you could get the whole car for $300.

I like 57 chevys, I own one, but if you buy this, be sure you cover
it up, so the flys wont blow it.

Richard just catching up here! You always post interesting things. My wife is like yours, in that if she likes a specific car, it's "you could fix that!" But you and I have been there and done that. Even in California that price would be absurd, yet I'm sure some young pup somewhere would think, it just needs a little sheet metal and it would be worth 50k!
I'm with you the '55 would be a better investment. I love these Chevy's but I don't LUVVVVV them that much!
Thanks Steve, your right I bought a 76’ Camaro, one owner in 1986 for the engine, trans plus the rest of the parts I could pull off. I had a 40’ Ford that I wanted to sub-frame and use as much as I could. My wife looked at the car she said "I think you can fix that car" my thought process had been changed. I worked on that car and she was right, I fixed it. The only thing was I had to strip it, patch the rusted areas and do a two tone paint job like it was as it was a Rally Sport. I advertised the car and people would say what's wrong with it because I only had it for $750 when I paid $375 for it. The interior was like new, new tires, battery, and new stereo. The body was just rusted out bad, A guy that just got out of the Army talked to my wife over the phone and she told him he better come to get this one. I don't even remember how long I worked on the car but in essence I just redid the car and sold it for less then I had in it not counting labor. My wife did that to me one more time on a 79’ Vette. I was walking away, she said "You can fix it" 4 years and stripping the car; went from silver to red, new interior, window motors, plus a big list of everything I did to the car. I sold it for $200 over what I paid for parts not counting my time and labor. My wife said, "Well you got experience."

Glad y'all have those nice wives, all I ever hear is "you got enough JUNK, where you going to put it" "you need to get rid of something else first". I keep telling her I have car's I have had longer than wives, she is number 3. I have to agree on the five seven looks bad rough for three grand.
Steve, does your wife have blue eyes if so they could be related. I think my wife believes I'm smarter then I am. Right now the built-in oven is 3/4's of the way out from the built in spot. The door spring broke it sounded like a shotgun went off in the kitchen. To make a long story short she thought it would be an easy fix. I have it pretty much apart and now we have to get two springs because I don't want to have to go through this again.
I had sinus surgery right after I tore up the riding lawn mower but couldn't work on it with the fear of infection because they had to get a lot of polyps and a cysts out. This morning I had to have a bone spur ground off from a wisdom tooth the Dentist pulled right before my other surgery.
Good news my oil primer (that Richard put a link on about a priming tool) was wanting at the gate when we got home, now I hope I can work on a car for a change.

Richard my Aunt and my cousins want me to take her vintage 4 door Mercedes from the early 60's or even late 50's (it has wings/fintail) that is garage kept in immaculate condition, but been sitting for 20 years in a hot garage in Fresno. They know I'm into cars and could restore it. The only problem is space and money to do it right. But it's a beauty inside and out. My wife thinks it's pretty cool and keeps saying you should take it! It looks just like this one below but has 4 head lights instead of two. It was also custom made in Germany onto a checker cab frame to hold up for a longer period of use according to my Aunt.

classic Mercedes arn't worth crap in reality.. they are really nice cars, but you can buy them all day long for $5-6k with the exception of gullwings... the 4 headlight version would be from the mid 60's all the way to 1976 depending on the model.. given it has wings, it's probably mid 60's..
if you want a daily driver that is fairly economical and looks kinda cool. it would be a great car to fix up.. most everything is available at the dealer. Mercedes is very good about that..
There is a place here in MI that sells NEW 57 chevy body only 33K that one would be fun to do for around 1K. 3K is a bit high
How about the 57 Chevy convertibles being built starting at $185,000 they just use the cowl and the windshield frame as far as I recall. I would have to go back through my saved pictures but they are nice.Quote:

When I was a kid my neighbor dug under their house they also started with buckets then a ramp with wheel barrels, the Dad turn it into a shoe repair shop as a side job. As kids we would hang out smoke his Camels cigarettes and tell stories.

a car like the57 should sell for scrap price only but a lot of people seem to think that just because its old it's wprth a lot of money in very few cases they are right but this is not one of them.and they will tell you anything to try to sell high, i use to buy cars for scrap prices from the yard i delt with.my first car cost me 25 dollars in1961.
I have a picture somewhere in my old computer of a 55 Chevy 210 2dr. sedan an absolute rust bucket. The guy had $5,000 on the windshield; I've seen some rare cars brought back but they had people with an endless supply of money at their disposal.
1962 my first car was a 51 Ply 2dr. and believe it or not the car had a new paint job (robin egg blue). I traded it 6 or 7 Months later and $100 for a 55 Chevy.

If he has it advertised it will be gone before a week that's my guess. I've been wrong before but for that price even with the glass front end is a good buy for a straight 55 Chevy.
