Talk about being dumb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was at a car show last Weekend and saw a bunch of guys around a beat up 32 ford truck. I mean this had holes you could drive your fist through but had a nice flathead from a 52 ford. Looking at the engine I couldn't believe what I saw. There was a glass bottle with a cork in it filled with gas sitting on his hot manifold. He had run his gas line through the cork and was using that as his gas tank. Now talking with him I asked him what the f--- are you doing running a vehicle like that. He replied that he didn't have time to put in a gas tank and this gallon of gas he had in the bottle would get him to the car show and back. I told him he was lucky in getting to the show but probably wouldn't get back to his house as the gas was leaking all over his manifold. I told him at least put the bottle up vertically as he had it laying down on it's side. I wasn't the only one telling him that he was a jerk doing what he was doing but he said the hell with you all and left. Well I guess he got about a mile down the road and it went up in flames as you could hear the fire department sirens.:whacked:

I use a 2 liter soda bottle with a hole drilled in the cap as a temporary gas tank on my '51 Chevy.. BUT it's just to pull the car in and out of the garage, and I don't normally leave gas in it.. has a nice spot right behind the battery to sit mostly vertical.

I can't believe how insensitive you guys are! Next thing you know you'll be talking about Darwin awards or something!

Having lived in Seattle for 30 years now I've come to realize what the real problem here is. This poor fellow is a victim, he needs our help. If you don't agree with me about that you obviously don't care as much as I do.

The real villain here is Big Oil! If they didn't purposely make that gasoline stuff so dangerous and flammable nothing bad would have happened. We should ban that stuff! Oh, and while we're at it, the glass bottle probably broke too, so let's put the CEO who runs the company that makes such an unstable container in prison! Time for several congressional investigations, some committee studies, and bring on the lawyers!!! Down with corporate America!!

To get back on topic, I and my friends at the time never put a glass bottle on the engine to use as a temp. gas tank. We did however take my 35 ford 4 door on it's maiden voyage at night with no tail lights or brake lights whatsoever (not even the housings), no exhaust (right out of the block), no gas pedal (friend worked the gas by reaching through the floor board), 4 bald tires with thread showing, and mech. brakes that just worked. You can imagine the horror of the CHP officer when we crossed the Bayshore freeway in front of him. Took him close to 45 min to write that ticket and read us the riot act. He let me drive it home as I lived just a couple of blocks away. :o

Been there. I had a 65 chevy super sport with a built 327. I use to manage a automatic car wash in my earlier days and put all the cops thru at N/C. That included states troopers. I got to know most of them pretty well to a point where they would bring me down a 6 pack of beer at night . One night I was going home and decided to see how fast my 65 would go and since I was half in the bag, I saw no problem with this. A peg my needle at 120 and was still going strong although my front end was all over the road. I drove home happier that a lark and the next day one of the troopers stopped down and showed me a piece of paper. He said "Bart I clocked you at 128MPH and knew it was you" because I had open exhaust pipes and you could hear me a mile away. He knew he wouldn't catch me and just let me go. I thought he would give me a ticket but because of my job and putting all there vehicles thru at N/C, he let me go. I still have that piece of paper. The crazy things you do when your young and live to tell the tales.:rolleyes:

Another "stupid" thing I did was a buddy of mine was given his parents corvair because the engine was bad. That was no problem and since we didn't like the 6 that was in it, we decided to drop a 283 in the back and tore out the seat in back to make it fit. Had a hell of a time getting an axle to fit and other things, but we cobbed everything together and started it up with no mufflers, just short 12" pipes coming from the stock exhaust manifold. Took it for a ride on Melrose road whcih is noted for its steep hills. Now we didn't have this register so we took it easy at first trying to keep the noise down. we had a piece of crap powerglide tranny hooked up that never shifted out of first gear so we could only go about 50 mph. We decided that was fast enough to hit the hills and see if we could "get some air" under us. We hit this one steep hill and crested it with the car leaving the surface. It seemed like we were airborn for a long time but probably only 5 seconds. Upon landing the front end gave away and we flipped over onto the top. I still can rember looking out and seeing the gas pouring out the gas tank with sparks flying and saying to myself if this catches fire were done.. For some strange reason it didn't and when we came to a stop we checked out the damaged and man was it bad. The top was like a pancake. Luckly we had our seat blelts on or it would have been worse as we just received a few cuts from flying glass. The next thing we heard was the sirens and sure enough, we both lost are license for awhile. I rember my father saying you keep this up and I'll be gray in about 2 years.:LOL:

If that glass bottle didn't have the (not to be used as a fuel tank) then it was ok yes

I think I may have told this before but it fits the MO of this thread.
When I was building my panel truck, once I got it running I thought I'd run it across town (pop 500) to the elevator to see what it weighed. I don't remember what the scales said but I do remember getting pulled over by the town cop about 2 blocks from making it back to the shop. He never did give me a ticket, but he did take up about 45 minutes of my time explaining why I shouldn't be driving this thing with NO plates, NO working brake lights, or Turn signals, NO sheet metal from the firewall forward, OPEN headers and Stack Hilborn injection off a sprint car. To compound the problem I had to ask him if he would let me drive the last 2 blocks to the shop before I shut it off because I know it won't fire back up hot. I had to yell this request a couple times because I couldn't get my voice to carry very well over the open headers. This was the early 70's....before they took this stuff so serious. :LOL:

1978, new to driving recently licensed, driving friends Plymouth Satelite! We were big into getting air back then, Decided to try the Dukes of Hazard up in the Barryessa hills. Came up a tall hill gunning it, got air, and noticed the road turned, and didn't go straight as I thought I remembered!, turning the steering wheel in mid air didn't turn the car!:LOL:
Fortunately we stayed on the road and survived to live another act of stupidity another day!:LOL::LOL:

I guess we have all done dumb things that in hindsight we wouldn't do today. During the gas crunch in the mid 70's everyone was scrambling to get their hands on as much gas as possible. We had a 64 Corvair convertible and I had 4 more Corvairs stored for parts to keep it alive. I took a second Corvair gas tank and installed it on top of the first gas tank and hooked up a selector valve so I could choose which tank to draw from. I would pull into a station on my designated day (remember odd and even days?) , pop the hood (trunk) and quickly pump in 30 gallons (or whatever the capacity of two tanks were.......I forget) and close the hood real fast before the station attendant became aware that a Corvair really shouldn't hold that much gas.

I usually got a strange look from them as I was paying because they couldn't understand how it held that much gas.:D Now, though, I shudder to think we were driving around with that much fuel in the nose of an already questionable car in a collision. :eek:

I rember when the gas crunch hit back in the early 70's and I was going to marthas Vineyard, Mass to catch a ferry at Woods Hole. We put a 5 gallon of gas in the back of my brother in laws station wagon in case we ran short as alot of stations were close. We got on the boat, went up to the snack bar to get a couple of beers when we heard the loud speaker asking for whoever car with license # --- to report to the Captain. Well it was my brother in Laws car and they happened to see the gas can even though we had put it under some clothes. They wouldn't sail with the gas in the wagon and I had to leave it at the dock and you know darn well it wasn't going to be there when we got back. The whole boat crew and passangers were pissed at us for holding up the boat 15 minutes.:(

i did very much that same thing in my 429 pinto .. cept i didn`t get off free .. i would have made it had a bud not stopped me and have me do a burn out
