Thieves-- Man O Man

In simple terms, the Castle Doctrine considers that it is not necessary to retreat from a threat before one employs deadly force within the boundary of ones home or place of business. The Castle Doctrine gives a person the legal right to use deadly force to defend that place (his/her "castle"), and/or any other innocent persons legally inside it, from violent attack or an intrusion which may lead to violent attack. In a legal context use of deadly force which actually results in death may be defended as justifiable homicide under the Castle Doctrine.

Some interesting comments here, on defense of home and possessions. As a little background, I am a retired Marine I spent 30 years in the Corps, I make that statement only for the purpose of qualifing what I am about to say. I am no virgin when it comes to shooting or for that matter of being shot. I have been through both way to many times to count. And by the way both are painful in complettly different ways.

I also Am a firm believer in my right to protect what I have. I am going to do that no matter what, If at the end of the day there is a price to pay for defending my home and my family I will proudly and gladly pay that price no matter what it is, the alternative is just to horrible to think about. And even can get worse if I let that alternative happen because I am worried about the consequences to me personally.

Now with that said I am not ever going to shoot down some poor Pilgrim Thief over "STUFF". If I can catch him and give him a little payment thats one thing, If I can do as I did and stop him or them in the way I did by scaring the hell out of them thats one thing. But shooting them down, over some tools, In the back as they fled is not an option at least not for me. It was after all just "STUFF" thats replaceable.

Now if that same thief in any way shape or form threatens my family or my home in any way, I don't give a damn what the law is or says. I will do what ever I have to do to stop that threat, I think that's what men do!! And are supposed to do!!

Well said, Roland, and I do not disagree with anything you said. My point in posting the "gist" of the Castle Doctrine was not to suggest that it is OK to shoot first and ask questions later. As you point out it is a matter of protecting life and limb of your family, and if you truly believe that your life is being threatened. Stuff is stuff, but life and a family's well being are priceless.

2 rounds in the ground was great control . I think If it was me as a thief the chambering of a shot gun is nerve racking . They carry such a high hit coverage area . Glad to hear you and family are ok though .

Most everybody posts what ifs as in an encounter with a single attacker---You had two---with more than one you are outnumbered and that should change the way people( courts) would look at you defensive measures.

Now then ---shoot them in the foot for stuff, knee for tools and ASS/BALLS for the SnapOn tools---they were of a much higher value as evidensed by the thiefs SORTING them out.

In florida now you don't have to be in your home to use deadly force.
You can be anywere on your property and use deadly force to protect yourself.
Just had a case recently where a 65 year old man saw two guys doing burn outs thru the neighborhood. the old man rode up next to them on a bike and asked them to please slow down because there were children out playing in the neighborhood. The passanger got out and started beating this old man that who dropped his bike and tried to retreat. Finally when the old man was ready to pass out from the beating this guy was giving him, the guy was bent over punching the old in the face when the old man pulled a gun and shot the man in the face. The District Attorney filed murder chacges against the old man, and the Judge thru it out after hearing what happened. Smart Judge, Smart Judge.

Displaying a weapon or shooting into the ground may be against the law in your state.....depending upon what the bad guys are doing. Shooting someone running away or driving away is almost always against the law....they have ceased the threat upon you.

Read the law, if in doubt ask someone like a CCW instructor. Dont rely upon street corner law...it could bite you big and you might become a cellmate of the guy who stole your stuff.

I may be pro gun and think all bad guys deserve getting shot but the law gives us specific rules within which we must operate

Excellent post Mike. You don't even have to spend a lot of time finding out all the intricacies of the law. Just ask one of the local police officers who would have jurisdiction if you had an altercation with a bad guy. If the officer is gonna be the one who shows up to find a bad guy with a round or two in him, then he's the one to ask what the consequences will be.

I have done that, in addition to attending and keeping active my concealed carry permit, so I have a pretty good idea what it will take. Here in my neighborhood, if a guy drove across town and bought a butcher knife at a yard sale (pretty much untraceable with all prints removed, if you choose a run-of-the-mill grocery store knife), then put a round or two into a perp, then wrapped the perp's hand around the butcher knife, it would probably be ok for the shooter as long as the perp is inside the shooter's residence. That's what the local police tell me. They have also told me that if I cap the worthless bastard outside, to drag him inside and use a towel to put the knife in his paw before making the call.

Digital infra-red see in the dark deer cam to catch pics of people scoping out your stuff, in case they get past your alarm. Why just scare them off when you can catch them and get the evidence the police need to put them away?
Sensor trigger security lights should scare off the timid thieves.

I am a newbie here but I will defend my family and home to the max. the home invaders or robbers etc. they are going to do what ever it takes so why not return the treatment. I wouldn't shot anyone in the back either but a couple shots in the leg might make them turn around and face me. :)

the one lesson i learned when i lived in va. qas that only shoot them once,using an ak-47 is not a defencive weapon.shot gun or hand gun are defenive weapons. i have a 10 guage goose gun abd a 45 1911 by traus.one shot one kill.here in ga. the local cops say as long as they are on your property.but make sure they are dead by the time the cops get here and are in prosession of you property.i have one serious dog g.shepard/chow mix. the other two are not aggressive.

My Grandpa always told me that there were two kinds of people that he could not stand, a liar and a thief. He said that both of them would do ANYTHING to get what they want and, in my ever so short 68 years on this earth, I have seen that he is correct. So, my take on all of this is this. If someone comes onto my property and attempts to take something that belongs to me then I CAN and I WILL do everything in my power to stop them from doing that. If I should end up in Jail for protecting MY property, then so be it but I WILL NOT stand by and watch it happen while the Wife calls the authorities. I don't think that I would even say STOP - - - why give them any warning or chance?
