deer rifle part 2
Well back around January I posted a thread about buying a .45-70 lever gun for deer and elk. Since then I've actually gone deer hunting, borrowed friends 7mm mag, and got my first deer at about 320 yards. I realize now that these longer shots are going to require a straighter firing round than the .45-70 , so I'm now looking at a 300 win mag savage rifle with an accu trigger and a accu stock. I know the 300 win mag is overkill for a deer, but some of the shots around here are upwards of 4-500 yrds. And I would also like to eventually go elk hunting and wild boar. Anyway any of you have a savage or other 300 win mag? How do you like them? Thanks.

Stovens, I have two 300 Win Mags and like both of them very much. Both of mine are custom rifles and one is my match rifle that I shot in competetion. I have found the 300 Win Mag to be a good solid and accurate rifle, but it is for sure over kill for those Ca. Black Tails you guys have out there. The only real problem ( and for you it may not be a problem at all ) is recoil. Shoot one of these a lot on a given day and it can be a problem for some casual shooters. It is a good choice for a long range rifle and should serve you well.

Are both of those Bull barrows? I know the one on the bottom is but I'm not sure about the one on the top. Kurt

Hombre's right, I shoot my 300 Mag only during hunting and some target before, to get use to (Or to remember) the kick it has. I use to shoot weekly, I don't now but back then I would target or be hunting all the time with my 9mm, 308, 30-30, and then it would be Elk hunting and I had to get use to Not getting hit in the eyebrow, cause you never want to have to tell people how you got the blackeye from the scope! :o I never got one! My brother had his barrel ported so it would not lift when shot, now it hits harder.
I can hit the center 5" of a paper plate at 500 yards, and I have had shots at Elk were the 1st shot landed by their feet, and 2nd took them down, thats a long way out. It's a big gun for deer.
My Dad, my brother, and I have a 300 Mag, and not one shots the same grain, or bullet shape best, all 3 shoot different.

the 300 win is a good choice for a hard hitting long range gun, my main rifle is a 300 good for just about anything in north america. Heck thers no such thing as too big a gun as long as you can handle the kick.
Nice rifles hombre

For all that you guys have said and more is why I'm getting the 300 win mag. I know what you mean about the kick and the "scope slam". Around here it's usually a long shot for deer, so accuracy counts. And for the bigger game it's nice to have some kick to the bullet when it gets there. I honestly didn't feel the kick of the 7mm mag when we were deer huntinting. I think at that point adrenaline is on overload and nums the rest.
One of my friends has been shooting a remington 7mm mag for most of his hunting life. His best friend shoots the 300 win mag. He said his next rifle will be a 300 too. For around here with the little deer a 30 06 is great with a smaller recoil, but the 300 actually isn't that much worse, and gives me the ability to use it with bigger game. I'd love the fill our new freezer with some Elk some day, good eating and lots of it. Thanks for your thoughts. Steve.

steve when you do get that elk do not forget who your friends are.:D

Barb I'm already doing that with my deer!:D
Made a venison meatloaf using one part sausage, one part deer and one part beef. It came out excelent! Problem is those little blacktails don't go far! But if I get an Elk, I'll send you some!

steve I have a Remington 700 bdl 7mm and a wetherby 300 win mag have hunted caribou deer and wild boar and I prefer the 7 mm just my opinion.....ted

Kurt, Yes both of those rifles do have Bull Barrles. The black rifle is my competition rifle with a Very Fast twist Shilen Barrel designed to stabilize a long, heavy .308 caliber bullet in the 300 win mag. This rifle is really for very long paper matches at distances of 1,000 to 2,000 yards.

Hombre; Wow 2000 yards, I've never shot that far.
Atleast not on a range, though I've shoot at targets in Calfornia at 1500 yards.
It was on Fort Ord and we used the XM14 sniper rifles, I guess it's about the
same as the XM21 today. Truth be none I don't even own a rifle anymore, and
have not for some years. Though I do go out shooting with some buddies in
brooksville Florida. The range only goes out to about 500 yards though.
Been trying to get my Mother to send some of my photo's from back then.
Be she getting old and I'll end driving up and going thru stuff my self I guess.
I guess I keep them the next time I get my hands on them photo's of me
back when I was a sniper in the Army.

I came out of my tent one time and had a the biggest buck standing there looking at me.
When I reached for mr camera he took off running,I must have chased him for 5 miles just to get his picture. He finally stopped and I creeped up and snaped his picture.
Took the film to get developed nothing non of the pictures came out. Talk about pissed.
Oh well I guess it was not to be. Never went Canoeing down the colorado river again.
So no more chances at getting pictures like that again. Kurt

The 7mm remington is a fine rifle. It shoots great and has a nice weight and feel. I actually felt priveledged to get to shoot my friends on my first deer hunt.
Dave - just a little weekend plinker? :)
Alan - no pot stirring. I respect hunters and non hunters. At 320 yrds I felt challenged enough, I respect bow hunters for what they do as well. I went into this not realizing how hard it is to shoot a deer in California. Unlike eastern woods where 100yds might be a long shot, here with the wide open ranges and low brush hillsides your lucky to get within 200 yards of a deer without spooking it. But until you try something, I guess you never really know what to expect. I respect my friends a lot more now!;)
Barb- Elksteaks or burger? (might be a while on this one!)
Dogtag here is a great sight talking about that crazy beast

Those are some long shots. What kind of scope power are on those rifles?

either one is good for me steve.

I shoot a .308 Norma, my brother has a 7mm Mag. Either will kill anything on the continent out to ranges that it's just too darn much work to go get 'em! A word of caution about a Savage bolt action....I bought a new one and fired it once, had to beat the bolt open with a hammer! The chamber was rough as a cob. Savage has outsourced many of its designs to Pakistan or somewhere, they are crap. Also they aren't a "captive round" action, the round can just fall out on the ground if the gun isn't held straight and level, as when you are lying down and trying to be nice and quiet. A military design is better, like a Mauser or Enfield. My .308 is a Parker-Hale, based on a Mauser.

steve there's a story of why I have my 700 bdl it and a friend of mine and that 700 saved my life it was Christmas of 1967 me and my friend jimmy were hunting caribou no. of Fairbanks ak. near chena hot springs and stumbled on about a 1200 lb moose so this was my first hunting trip in Alaska so I aimed and squeezed one off from my newly purchase marlin 30-30 perfect shot right shoulder hit it pissed him off he came after us running on 3 1/2 legs I was soo scared I shot 2 more times and missed jimmy stopped him with 2 shot from his 700 he died about 15 yrds. from us and jimmy a long time hunter was pissed at me for shooting him we gutted and caped and quartered him but it took us 8 hrs. to pack him out of there when jimmy rotated out I bought that 700 and still have and use it .....ted

I used to hunt in the Sierras, zones D-4, 5, and 6, and over in the X zones near Portola and to the Nevada border. My basic rifle is a Savage 111 in 30-06, and it has never let me down. I have also hunted with a couple of my old Winchester lever guns, a Garand, and a Browning High-Wall .45-70. Some years I filled, and some were skunkers; but good years, none the less. But, I also will not take a shot that is more than about 200 yards over reasonably mild terrain; too lazy and broken. In my youth, I was much more daring. Some of the gents I used to hunt with had 7's and 30 cal mags, and they were good pieces, and flat shooting compared to my '06, but in the D zones, I never saw a reasonable shot over a couple hundred yards. One time, one of the guys took a nice buck with his 7mm Mag across the river, and about a quarter mile up the other slope, a solid 350 - 400 yards; dropped it where it stood. He said he had hoped it would tumble to the bottom; took him and the other "kid" in the camp several hours to fetch it all back. Out in the x zones, a longer range, flatter and faster cartridge will have more benefit. There was a gent that I saw every year I was in D-5 who filled his tag every time, and he used a Winchester model 94 in .30-30. He walked those woods like a ghost, was quiet spoken and unassuming, a true mountain man; so it all sort of depends on many factors. Good luck in your hunts.
