Ya' know I took the time today to read this entire thread. And I'll have to admit Dave and the other "open show" proponents make some very valid points. If we have truly gotten to the point where we need to open shows up to more years for the survival of the hobby/sport, then having open shows is certainly better than having no shows. But it's hard for me to believe we're at that point...right now anyway. Although I don't honestly know. I do know the Early Tin Dusters bring in between 800-900 street rods for their Fall Color Run every October in Quincy. And that's just a small local club. We had crappy weather (cold and rainy) for last years' show so attendance was down slightly. But if their numbers are any indication street rodding is alive and very well...for now.
As far as street rodders being buttheads, snobs, and general asshats, you'll find that in any kind of car show, open or not. It's not anymore prevelent with street rodders than any other group of car show participants. I know because over the years I've sat in street rod, street machine, and muscle car classes and there were just as many dickheads in one class as the others. Fortunately there haven't been lots of 'em but there's always one somewhere. And I'll offer myself as an example. Er..uh, I mean as a nice guy. I'm a really nice guy. Really. No, seriously. I really am. So are my street rodding buddies. We're all sweethearts. I don't mean with each other. I mean...well you know what I mean.
And, Dave and all the open show proponents, I have a two word answer to every, single, one of your posts...Good Guys. They do a superb job of presenting the exact kind of show you're looking for. I think they go up through '72 and you can bring anything...even a Datsun if you want!
Now having said that, I think Dave's point about open shows insuring the longevity of our car show hobby is a strong one. Street rodders are indeed aging. I'm 60 and the numbers of younger people interested in street rodding are not looking too good. So, we do indeed need to be proactive lest we find ourselves as street rodders becoming an extinct entity. At least extinct enough to not be able to support any organizational efforts on a national level. As Dave has said, one way to stimulate interest is to participate in some open shows with our rods and cultivate younger participants.
I'm not quite ready yet to completely give up on the idea of street rod exclusive organizations and shows. But I do think it might become inevitable as street rodder numbers begin to dwindle over the next 10 years or so.
I like the idea of organizing cars by classes at open shows. That way you can kind of have your cake and eat it too. I'd be together with my street rodding friends but could still view other classes of cars if I wanted. It's done at lots of small local shows and works very well.
I'm now glad I read the entire thread. It's opened up my mind and given me some things to consider regarding the future of street rodding and car showing in general. I'll have to chew on this awhile though. And there are a lot of good points brought up in the thread I didn't address here. I'll leave it up to someone else to do that. OK, I'll shut up now.

from another forum. Looks like about 4,000 people are boycotting.
Just back from picking up our packet for the Nationals, they're showing registration numbers only going up into 7200. That's way down from past
years & they can't blame it on the economy (but they will). Looks like the shirt
prices are up too, $20 for the T-shirt. Looks like they cut their noses off the spite their face. JMHOThere are two things in life where penetration is really important.....and one of them is welding.

from another forum
Local louisville here, I have been at the fairgrounds all day. The vendors inside are way down. The highest car number I seen today was 8200. NSRA has screwed up big time. Next year will be a joke...There are two things in life where penetration is really important.....and one of them is welding.

You know...when the word gets out about the changes in the next couple of years, that number might jump. Just a thought.

My wife and I have attended two NSRA events this year (OKC & Springfield) and were very pleased with what was shown. The 50's pickups at OKC were just fabulous and the 32 Fords (my favorites) were a very nice group at both events. I just don't understand boycotting events like these. You may be killing something you cannot replace. I just don't see any good coming out of boycotting. The street rodders we have met have just been a great group of people, so I have confidence that they will turn this into a positive thing. At least this is what we are hoping for. We are looking forward to making these shows next year. Bonneville on our "to do" list.

Well folks, for those of you that go, I hope you have a great time. For those of you that chose not to go, I hope you have a great time doing whatever else is better than going to a rod run.
I looking forward to the feedback on how it was. Down here, our 2011 Nationals has a max of 500 participants, so I guess I would be impressed to see 8200 cars.
Even if I would walk past rows of Elenor replicas without giving them a second glance, I still appreciate that somebody, somewhere, loves them to bits.
And our sport is about our passion for cars, and the great people we meet thru them.

Same with me Todd!!! At our local show, we'd be downright giggly if we ever got 500 cars, guess it's all relative, huh???? I don't understand how any group or individual would hope for a show's failure!!! With the current economic conditions and the gov'ment making it tougher on Hot Rodders everyday could be that a someday a show with "only" 8200 cars is little more then a memory!!! What's good for the hobby is good for all of us and what hurts the hobby hurts all of us! But then I guess I've never been one to take pleasure from someone else's failure!Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

The ill will towards the NSRA is because of THEIR actions. If it was a pre-48 show this year, there would be 11,000 happy street rodders there....including me.
If they go back to being a street rod show, I will be back. There are two things in life where penetration is really important.....and one of them is welding.

People are just resistant to any kind of change. We get comfortable doing things a certain way. However, last year when it was announced Turkey Run in Daytona would start accepting newer cars the same kinds of doom and gloom were being said. But Turkey Run was just as good as ever, if not better, and the numbers were up. Not many ricers or donks showed up because for them a show like this is not their cup of tea either.
We also have to remember that by most State standards a 30 year old car is an antique. Yeah, I know, no one wants to see an 80 Citation with bling bling wheels, but all you have to do is walk past them and not look if you are not interested. H***, we all do that now. I walk past tons of cars without stopping because I gravitate towards certain types, and if they don't interest me I just keep going.
I bet if you guys give it a chance you will see very little change or issues. You might actually enjoy it more if you just open your minds up a little. (Now, where was that Citation I saw on Craigslist? )

Here's my ramble, and I mean ramble.
My opinion is if you don't want to look at later model vehicles then don't stop and look at them, move on to the next pre 19** one, simple as that. I'm 42 and grew up around Street Rods. I personally like pre '48 runs but, that is a thing of the past. Change is upon us, accept it or stay at home. Could go fishing or work in the garage. Honey does come to mind. Unfortunately, that's the way it's gonna be for a very long time. My children are 5 and 8 yrs old they love the old cars, lets see what happens when they grow older. One very large problem is the cost of building Street Rods. Everyone here knows how much, I just hope that enough of our children, grand children and so on pick up the bug, and continue the pre '48 cars in general. Let's face it, they were and are the best looking cars every produced, even though we have sliced, diced, slammed, decked, nosed and blinged the s**t out of them. OK, I'm done with my ramble.

okay, I have read most of this thread not all I will admit guess I have ofadd (old fart attention deficit disorder) I am a newbie here and don't want to make any enemies cause I am a car NUT till I die. I love good ole American Iron/horse power. none of this turner crap. I planed on going to NSRA but all my buddies backed out one me now on to my opinion or 2¢ worth even though no one asked for it.
I'm not saying I agree with the 30 year rule. I like original old steel cars not fiberglass or new kits. I was at NSRA last your and there were lots of brand new 32's, 34's etc.. and so on that were manufactured with in the past year or even later so what about those type car's. Should they not have been allowed in before and even now there not even in the 30 year class if you look at it like that. I know there are contribute cars to the 32's-34's. Now don't get me wrong they are top notch car's better than anything I will ever own.
Please don't bash me to bad just asking and wondering. I would like to stay a member here. I will sneak away before the a$$ kicking beginsLast edited by green34ford; 08-06-2010 at 01:52 PM. Reason: can't spell

Nah, no bash nor butt kicking - but the scarcity of old iron that can be built into a street rod is beyond most folks ability and wallet. I've already said my piece several times about that plus the economy. Plastic and repros (such as my Brookville '31) are about the only reasonable way to go to stay within the 1948 guideline. And the $$ I've spent. Some can take the high road - but that 1948 date - it was just arbitrary at the time by NSRA and it was a good date 40 years ago, but it doesn't work today.
Go to NSRA and/or Goodguys and have a great time. Hot rod/muscle car folks - there isn't a lot of difference. The other types, sporty/donks/econo boxes.....Dave W

I guess I just don't get why it is that pre 48 shows are a thing of the past. This weekend at Summit Racing they are having a Mustang show, there will be no chevelles or roadrunners. Also at norwalk this weekend is the Pontiac nationals, again no mustangs or belairs. But for some reason a pre 48 show is taboo. We have a 32 3 window and a 55 chev and enjoy both but the street rod nationals is just that and has always been pre 48. I will also say there has never been a shortage of them in Louisville. A good friend has a 63 split and we always go to goodguys in Columbus together and this year sitting talking I asked if they wanted to got to street rod nationals. He said I don't have a street rod, I told him they changed the rules and his corvette could go! He again said I don't have a street rod and that is just not right. I hear all this about aging owners, what I have never seen is when someone passes on that the car disappears. These cars in big numbers are just going to change hands and go forth. Since there was basically no conversation about the change it was probably some family close to the top of NSRA pitching an issue that doesn't even understand the sport. Look at the pre 48 attendence in Louisville for years it has been amazing. I guess if they are all gonna be the same we have Goodguys shows much closer and will just go there. No longer anything unique in Louisville. We had reservations for a year and cancelled them the week before and stayed home this one, but we know some who went and I'm sure there will be plenty of ongoing conversation. Well just my 2 cents.

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
