I know there are some Pinewood derby pros here. Does anyone have a stockcar template?
No template, but a piece of advice. When my son was involved many years ago, I was working in a body shop. I took his car to work one day to paint it. I sealed the wood, laid on several coats of primer, then sanded, and painted it with basecoat/clearcoat. It was so slick it looked like it had been molded from resin. He was doing good in the races and then he got disqualified because "dad did too much of the work" on the car.:eek::mad::mad:
Have fun, but don't make it look "too good"...;)
I won third in the pack back in the day :cool::D. I am really no help here but one thing to keep in mind...I did 4 cars the first one very aerodynamic (modeled after a firebird) the last one was almost a block on wheels :LOL:. the last one did the best...no idea why :confused:
Understand that. Last years cars I cut it out and put the wheels and weight in it, they sanded it and painted it. We won first in both of their divisions in local and district, but finished 4th overall in district to the ebay cars.Quote:

35FordCoup....I just went to the Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby with both grandsons 2 weeks ago. One took 3rd Place with just the block of wood with add'l weight to make it legal 5.0 oz.. His brother and mom, who is asst. pack leader both had aerodynamic cars I helped with and they didn't even place.
2 years ago the oldest grandsons too 2nd at the pack race and 3rd in the regionals. The key is to polish the hell out of the axles, graphite and true the wheels

I remember mine. It was red with carved rear fender fins and a short windshield. Tires were real rubber (off what I don't remember). My dad did the chiseling for the wheel track, I carved the rest of the body and painted it red. We were both very proud of the car, even though it didn't win anything nor was it overly impressive. But it was a shared fun project.
I think I still have it some place in a box.:D Oh crap, that was 56 years ago this year. :eek: Wow, does time fly when you're having fun.:cool:

Did three different cars with my eldest son over the years. First one was like a carrot shape, came in fifth in the racing, and a third for design. Second was a little blue coupe, got zip. The last one we did for laughs, when the sawdust settled, and the paint was dry, it looked like a little red running shoe. Even had laces painted on it. Didn't go very fast, but it sure brought out the grins and chuckles, and be darned if we didn't get another third for design. That one was the most fun for both of us, and it's the one he still has.
