need help finding virus..PLEASE!

my stupid computer has been acting up alot lately,it's driving me nuts
and I'm learning a few new cuss words:mad::mad:if I run a scan with AVG
anti-virus every day, it picks this up,causing it to slow down and sometime it freezes up, I had a guy that knows a little about computers look at it, he could'nt fix the problem,I know very little about computers so I could lots of help..thanks

Clear your cookies.

Under "Tools", click "Internet Options", then Select "delete cookies"

Try running Trend Micro House Calls, it's a free download that will scan your computer system, detect viruses and help you eliminate them.

IF you don't have it install this freeware: Spybot,mine was slowing down and freezing too,not any more:3dSMILE:. AVG works on virus protection but does not eliminate spyware unless you have the pay upgraded version.

Spybot and Avast keep my machine clean and running smooth. I used to run AVG and I have found the Avast to work much better for me.

Another recomendation. Download and install "superantispyware" from superantispyware.com

Corny name, but it works better than anything else I have found.

I used to work as a marketing associate for an IT firm up until 2 weeks ago. There seems to be a lot of Trojan Viruses going around that many of the popular AV programs, including Symantec, cannot detect. The techs used a free software called Mallwarebytes that detects almost anything and will repair or quarrantine the virus. It's at http://www.malwarebytes.com

I've been running McAfee Internet Security for the last couple of years and while it is a pretty good internet safety program, it really slows my computers down. I rebuilt my desktop a couple of days ago with a new ASUS motherboard(it had a USB connectivity problem) and a faster AMD CPU. This improved it a lot - but it is still slower then it should be. I put McAfee on my new laptop set up for wireless operation - and instead of needing a watch to see how long it takes to boot up - an hour glass is more appropriate.

There are some alternates listed here (freebies) and am curious if there are other good choices - then MAYBE I can dump McAfee (Norton/Symentec from past personal & business experiences are even worse) and use one of those.

(As a note - I get better computer information from knowledgeable folks on this site then any geek site. I don't have to wade through a bunch of their personal ego generated jargon:D:D - I'm a mechanic, not a geek)

I had the same results with Macafee-went with avg free

I use AVG Free vs 8.0 on my laptop and it seems to a good job. (www.grisoft.com) I also use Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6, Wndow Defender (not that great) and Lavasoft's Adware. On my desktop I use all of the above except AVG, instead using Trend Micro's Internet Security.

I will not use Macafee nor Symantec (Norton's A/V) and strongly recommend that you never use Norton Utililties because too many friends have with disasterous results like blown hard drives.

Sometimes the best fix is just to get a new hard drive.:(

I've run Kaspersky for the last couple of years and it catches just about everything and doesn't slow the computer down. IMHO, McAfee and Norton are a waste of time and money.

I use the CA Internet Security Suite (upgrade from RoadRunner) and Spyware Doctor with Anti-Virus. McAfee & Nortons can't keep up.Also clean out your temporary files and cookies daily.

A few weeksa ago I was having problems. Microsoft has a free service from thier website. A 1-800 number posted on the site to call, and they talk you through the whole process. She was a little hard to understand with broken English, but we got through it with no problem and found the problem.

You have to watch out.

99% of the "free" anti-virus and spyware programs are spyware in themselves. They might offer some relief from the virus that is causing you grief but they are not as they appear.

Nothing is free in this world my friends and companies don't make anti-virus software just to be good Samaritans.

When you install a "free" spyware/anti-virus program, you are simply substituting a less destructive malicious software that may offer some relief from the problems you are experiencing but your computer is still infected in a more stealthier way. They are for suckers.

You have to pay and keep your anti-virus software up to date if you want to be truly free of unwanted infections.

Another way to do it is to re-install everything from scratch and then before you go online, back it all up on another hard drive. Then if you become infected again you can simply clone the clean drive and you'll be free again with the original blistering speed.

GREAT! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! just be sure to run it every few days or so because it has to be done manually from what I can see. 1st time I used it, it found over 3000 things on my computer.....joe

seems like some of guys are having better luck than me,I tried loading
Spybot ,about half way something else took over,buy the time I was
done,some stupid stopzilla had loaded up and want me to buy or donate !!
then I tried the housecall ,1 and half hour later (a big nothing) so I tried
again,now after a very long wait ,it said I needed to install some other
program, buy this time there is smoke coming out of my ears,my wife
is laughing at me cause I am threating the freaking computer,:whacked:
and to top all off,I could not get on this tread all weekend :mad::mad:
oh well ! not all is lost,, we got to watch a good game !!:D:D

I looked at all of the suggestions you folks made then did a search on the internet, including PC Magazine and PC World. They are all in love with Norton/Symantec for a paid version, like the Microsoft vesion, ho-hum about McAfee and Kaspersky, are OK with the AVG products.

They really like the AVAST as a free software. Minor faults, but those can be lived with. I downloaded it and my computer has new life!!! It starts easy as well as shutting down just like the old days. The laptop - back to normal once the McAfee was gone.

It's interesting how these software companies rise then fall as McAfee was well rated when I originally bought it a few years ago and kept it only because I was comfortable with that product - and now it's mediocre rated. Oh well, live and learn.

I ran Norton on my old Gateway until it let a worm,trojan, whatever through and crashed the hard drive. I tried CA and it basically brought the computer to a halt, so I switched to Kaspersky.
The Dell I got a couple of years ago came with McAfee and when the subscription ran out I went with Kaspersky as I couldn't justify McAfee's much higher cost and lower ratings.
On a side note, when I uninstalled Norton on the Gateway it took about 4 hours to clean out the registry editor. Norton doesn't like to be uninstalled and their customer service, some clown in India, Pakistan, wherever, is worthless.:mad:
