Does anyone remember the thread on CHR a few years ago (If I remember right) about the JATO rocket that smashed into the side of a cliff?

Someone on another site dug this up.

If I remember right it was a Darwin awards winner. The guy attached it to an Impala for a ride into a cliff.

It was debunked as a hoax I now read. here is the Darwin article.

I remember these little babies - they were used by the USAF in short runway situations. They're actually rockets (not jets) JATO sounded better that RATO? They were a "one-time-use" and actually kinda dangerous. I never saw one go off prematurely, but heard stories about them shooting down the flight line. I know that expended JATO bottles were lined up outside base ops in Tule (Greenland) and used for ashtrays.

 Check out this Mythbusters http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ORXv_1XlDY
for a great video of similar rocket approach to making a car go real fast! the likelihood of anyone really doing this? Well - you be the judge after watching the Mythbusters..

 What's fuel burn on those?
A couple thousand gal/hr full afterburn?
