While I have considerable sympathy for the first half of your statement, I disagree considerably with the second half.

I hold less value with words (however important and revealing they may be) than with actions. For me there are two events that I'm afraid are very predictive.

The first is the virtual public hanging of a private citizen, namely Joe the Plummer. Here's a guy who was sought out by a political candidate, probably to be used as a favorable photo op. When Joe had the audacity to ask a question that illicited a reponse from the candidate that proved to be problematic for that candidate all manner of hit people dug into his life to find whatever they could to discredit him. Perhaps some of you folks on here aren't disturbed by this but attempting to publicly destroy a private citizen for political gain doesn't bode well.

The second is the hanging in effigy of a certain VP candidate. Though it doesn't rise to the technical definition of a federal hate crime, I would like to believe that reasonable people would recognize hate when they see it. Respecting the spirit of our First Amendment I have no problem with these clowns displaying such on their own property, go for it, show the world what you're made of. My angst comes from the lack of response by the candidates of the opposing party. Intended or not, their lack of aggressive condemnation implies endorsement (or at least tolerance) of this kind of selective hateful behavior. Is there any doubt that had it gone the other way there would be all manner of condemnation? Where's the self annointed voice for the rights and dignity of women........NOW? Why does it seem that some reporters have a hint of glee in their voices when telling this story?

Like I said, actions speak louder than words.
