This made my day - An Unexcepted Phone call from FRANCE

Well my day just got better by 100000000%:D **) :D **) . Joe(my son) just called us from France where he stationed at the moment before he moves on to "Who Knows Where" while deployed overseas. He says he's doing GREAT & has even been given 18hrs worth of shore leave since he had been on Shore Patrol Duty for the past 2days. It was great to hear his happy & excited voice once again. He said the country is amazing but the roads & drivers are crazy. He talked about how small the roads are & how he could never drive his truck down them because of their size. He also told us he was asked to leave a shopping mall because he was drinking. He told us you can drink basicly ANYWHERE in France but the malls so they asked him to kindly leave, which made no difference to him.
The one thing that just shocked the holy living cr@p outta me was that it cost him $28.26 a minute to talk to us. You would think that the US Goverment would have some kind of phone network for the military people. I guess we're going to have to find some Universal European phone cards for that guy so it doesn't cost so dang much to call home to us.

If he has access to a computer and high speed internet.. get him a magic jack.. $20 a month and call anywhere in the world.. the jack is only $39 and any regular phone will plug into it

There is nothing like a phone call from a loved one far away. I agree when in the Military they should make some way for the family to stay in touch without costing a fortune.

if he has access to a pc tell him to look into a soft phone through aol or yahoo. call anywhere in the world for 1 cent a minute and can pick a local to you phone number to call. I have it set up. works very well. the call rings through the speakers and i talk through my mic. skype from england also offers a soft phone. none of these have monthly fees and you just load them using a credit card. I think that it is insane that our military can not make calls to home for free.

Glad to hear he's o.k. Long distance overseas is outrageous! Emails are good, but nothing like hearing their voice!

Glad to hear that he is okay and doing well. Next time you talk with him tell him we truly appreciate him for serving and to have fun and to be safe. :cool:
