Went to a car show today, lotsa pictures.

My Son Don somehow heard about a car show in Northport Florida, which is about an hour and a half drive north from us, so today we took a little drive to check it out. Don's and his Girlfriend went in his T, and I took mine. It turned out to be a pretty good show, especially for September in Florida. Most shows flop during the summer here because of the heat and the fact most people with rods seem to come back as winter residents. Still, they had 92 cars show up, all of which we had never seen before.

Very nice people, and we had a lot of nice conversations and got great comments on both of our cars. Didn't see one jerk in the whole lot. :3dSMILE: When the show was almost over they handed out trophies, and they called my name! :eek: I never expect to win one because my T isn't flashy. I was hoping Don would get one, and a few minutes later they called his name too!! :D There were some pretty nice cars there, so it was surprising to both of us. But we aren't giving them back!! :LOL:

And a man and his wife had two of the most beautiful wolves as pets that I have ever seen. They were totally friendly, and well mannered, but he says they are not like regular dogs, you can't really break them. They accept you and listen to you to a degree, but they won't follow you around or stuff like that.

The older one is a Mexican something or other wolf, and the young one is a timber wolf.

Well, those are all the pictures I took. When we got back to the shop Dan had been working all day finishing the boxing of his frame. He wanted to skip going to the show so he could get some welding time in. Almost ready to take in for powder coating finally. :D :D :D

Hehe, well, I could do that, but the girls down here all wear such skimpy string bikinis that I'm sure all the guys on here would complain about me posting those pictures. :rolleyes: :rolleyes:

Don nice pics. I loved the purple mopar and it was nice to see the Amc as well. Congrats on the awards to both you and Don Jr. He looked real happy, and you real proud along side of him! Also great progress on the frame, can't wait to see Dan's car rolling! You under rate your work. Who needs flashy when simple elegance will do. Great jobs, oh and we like skimpy bikinis!:D

Thanks Steve, I'm not a trophy hound, but have to admit it was nice to get one, especially from a group of people I didn't know before the show. Best part was the drive home at night.........it was perfect roadster weather, cool and a little breezy. Really pleasant.

Congrats on the trophies guys, you earned them! Nice pics too, ive seen that coupe with the true flames at daytona a few times, if i remember right it was in the car corral last year and he was asking somewhere around 125k

Looks like it was a good show, and congrats to ya both on the hardware!!!! The grocery store won't trade them for food but they're still nice to get and it lets ya know that someone else appreciates all the hard work that goes into a car....

Now, about that black Mustang with the red stripes and the 427 decal?????

What a great day!! Quality time with the kids, nice cars to look at, and a nice ride home. You are a lucky man.

Kind of feel sorry for them, all that fur and Florida heat too.

Some very nice looking cars, but I can see why you and Don got a couple of awards. His looks like a traditional T, and yours... looks more like a sled T. Never realized that his cowl is taller than your windshield. Really Kewl.:cool: :cool: And I love the shot thru your windshield, gives one the feeling of really being there.:)

John, I thought I had seen that black coupe before too. It really is a nice piece, and I'm not usually a fan of those true flame jobs, but it looks good IMO on this one.

Dave, I know what you mean about the trophies. That was the part that felt good.....going to a strange show and having people you don't know say they approve of the hard work you have put in. As for that Mustang, I don't know a thing about any cars newer than 1970, but I asked Don what that car is, and he said it is either one of the new Mustangs that have a 4.6 type engine that the factory is punching out to 427 cubes, or it is a poser who bought the decals for one of those and put it on a regular Mustang. I did notice he didn't open the hood or stand around to answer questions though. ;) :D

Ken, yep, it was a perfect day. Hot at first, but after 6 it started to cool down pretty well. I get to see Dan every day, but with Don's work schedule and his Girlfriend in the picture we only get to see him maybe two times a month. So spending time with him and his GF was nice. I like her more every time I see her, very down to earth, and she makes him happy from all indications.

All the way up and back I was thinking of your friend and his accident though. We avoided the interstate completely, and took Old rt 41 there and back. Much slower and safer, plus the scenery was better too. Hope your buddy is continuing to improve.

Bob, Don and his GF were laughing at me because the guy with the wolves and I talked for quite a while. I was fascinated by them, but they were laughing because the guy and I were trading pet stories........him about wolves and me about cats.:LOL: :LOL: I kind of liked the pictures through the windshield too.........made me feel like we were on some big adventure or something.

second, how is he keeping the frame from flash rusting while he is working on it?

Red, yeah, there were a lot of very nice cars there, and one T bucket in particular (the one with the wheelie bars) that I thought should have beaten us, it was very well done. You never know what is going to turn a judge on though.

As for keeping the bare frame from rusting, it is a never ending battle here in Florida with our high humidity. Dan has been using Picklex 20 sometimes on a Scotchbrite pad, and that helps somewhat. We also use gloves when handling anything, but even if your arm touches the metal it rusts in a day.

I just made some floor panels for my Dodge truck out of new 18 gauge steel, and when I went back a day later they were totally rust covered. Dan keeps using a DA sander with 80 grit on it to clean the metal, and he gets a week out of it before the rust starts setting up. He also won't take any pictures until he shines up the metal, so it looks like it is always rustfree, but it really isn't.

Wish I had some good answers for you, but I don't.

Thanks Ken, I appreciate that. Sitting there watching people crawl over and under your car and critique it is always a little strange, no matter how you try to have the attitude that it is your car and you don't care what others think. I had one guy who came back 4 times and finally he told me he liked the simplicity of my car, and was making mental notes. That always feels good when something like that happens. On the other hand, Don had more lookers, and ladies seem to like the color.

Thanks Pat. That '59 Caddy took best of show, and really deserved it. The car was extremely nice. When they went up to get their trophy the wife told them they had just sold the car, I bet it went for a nice sum. The Buick was nice too, and very optioned, even down to real wire wheels. There are some very nice cars in the Port Charlotte/ Punta Gorda/Northport/Venice Florida area. Every time some of them come down to a Ft Myers Show the cars they bring are spectacular.

nice to see them old cars the way they made them. i would have a hard time cutting one up. the last car i painted was a 63 caddy boy what a tank 23 feet long was like painting the side of a building the hood was as long as some inports:D

Don your build is what first hooked me on this site. Informative and cool! Ken's right it's Bitchin! There will always be critics out there, but when the day is done, your driving the t bucket home, with a grin on your face, and knowledge that you built it to the best of your ability, and a trophy on the passengers seat!:cool:

Pat, you are right, that Caddy was HUGE!! We forget how big these things were until you see them up close again. I had a '59 Caddy four door hardtop in about 1968. I bought it for $ 400 for a winter driver so I could park my GTO until Spring, and it was mint. For some reason I stopped using it (I think the fact I couldn't get a date to go out with me in it entered into the decision:o ) and a junkman came one day and I sold it for something like $ 25.00. When I came home from work that night he had chopped it into a zillion pieces in my carport with an axe! Then he came the next day and hauled the pieces away. I still don't know how he did that one.

Steve, what ever inspired you to come aboard here was a good thing. You have always been one of the most active, nicest guys on here. Glad to hear I had some little part in that happening. As for the trophy in the passenger seat, that is exactly where it rode. It isn't the biggest one ever, but I feel pretty good about it nonetheless. One time I went to a show with my '27 and somehow won a trophy that time too. It was the biggest darned thing I have ever seen, kinda Grand National Roadster Show size, almost. :) They must have gotten a good deal on them because all the trophies they handed out that day were big. I rode home with it in the passenger seat of my '27 and it stuck way above my rollbar. :LOL: People must have thought I was showing off or something, riding around with my trophy.

dmw56, yeah, like I mentioned I don't know one newer car from another, they just aren't of any interest to me. I do think those Mustangs are a new Ford creation, or maybe like you said, Roush. Looks like they are getting 427 cubes out of some new motor.

Brad, hope to see you this year at Daytona. Stick around a little longer this time, they actually rent rooms for the night in that town! :LOL: You probably won't be seeing Dan's car this year, he has taken on managing another property, and is working 15 hour days right now, so between that and me going back to work full time we only have weekends to work on it. But he is ok with that and realizes taking his time will let it end up much better in the long run.

Thanks guys. Yeah Paul, he is getting down to the short strokes on the frame. Won't be much longer now...................I hope. :D Big question is, how is your car coming? Have you gotten any more done on it since I was up there?

T42, I have NO idea what that car was, and I looked it over pretty well. He was busy talking to some other people and I couldn't ask him. Best guess is that it is some company's kit body and he put it on some chassis. Beyond that, I haven't a clue.
