Problems with camera and Vista

Is there any experts out there on this. I have a Compaq computer with Vista software and I can't get it to load the pics off the camera. It is a Casio Exilm and it always loaded fine on my old puter. I plug the camera base into the USB port and it makes the little noise that says i'm hooked up but it never can find the pics.
I thought I would outsmart it and bought a little Targus card reader for my camera card and after loading the that thing up with the right software it acts the same way, can't find the pics through the USB port.

any ideas??

if you are using casio software to get the pictures off of the camera.. right click on the software shortcut, click on compatibility and change to windows Xp SP2.. should work then.

I couldn't get my camera to work with vista either... I ended up having the hard drive replaced in my old laptop and taking the vista machine back..Hope the suggested solution works for you.

the real problem is Vista. it's not compatible with many older devices.. it should recognize an SD card reader, as long as it is vista compliant but the cheepies you get, are not.. I have Vista on my laptop, I screwed up my Ubuntu linux install, so I have not fixed that yet. and was using Vista.. not only does it not work with a laundry list of things that I feel it should. it does not support the Windows help format, which is crazy... Vista was the last straw that pushed me into fully being a Linux user, and both of my machines run Ubuntu Linux 8.04, both with the KDE desktop installed

I will reload the software and try your idea a later today Matt, I sure hope it works.
If I could turn back the hands of time I would have never bought this POS . We left it packed up too long and when we found out nothing worked on it, it was too late to take it back.

Download Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and burn it to a cd, run the cd in vista and click on install in windows. it will leave Vista in tact, but allow you run Ubuntu, which is more compatible with things like this.

I use the Windows Explorer program to get to the camera. Computer treats the camera (on a USB tether) as a hard drive and assigns a drive letter to it. I don't use the software that comes with the camera, too many incompatibilities with the o/s.

Vista is pretty, but I hate it. Can't wait for the next version, I hope they get it right next time. :LOL: :LOL:

When plugged in the camera should show up like an external device/drive. You should be able to open it up and manipulate at the file level.

some cameras don't work that way tho. I have an HP digital 620v, and it needs the software if you plug the camera in. it won't come up as a external drive.. I get my pics off vista by using the card reader in my laptop.

I also have an external USB card reader (about $15) that works with 12 different types of cards but I only use it when transferring from a card to somebody elses computer. They are good to have if you can find one cheap, plus they are small enough to stick in your pocket. I have not owned a camera that doesn't link like an external hard drive. I have Kodak, a Konica, an Olympus and a Nikon SLR and all work that way.

Never had a HP, looks like I probably never will now that I know they don't link.:LOL: :LOL:

every other camera, I have had does work like a USB drive.. The HP I have is the only 1.. I never did figure out why, but I have a card reader in my printer, and I can get the pictures off the card with it.. I'm actually amazed at the quality of the HP I have, it's approx 5 years old, 2.1 MP but still works great.

What memory card do you have in the camera? SD card? Does your computer have a card reader? I have never had a problem with reading a memory card on Vista. No disrespect but most errors ar caused by the user. I have had digital cameras for years but always used the card reader not the cable.

No offense taken, I'm as computer stupid as they get. It is an SD card and I am just assuming that it has a card reader because I thought they all did by now. How do you check?

Most newer computers have card reader slots in the front. If yours does not, you can purchase an add on card reader at places like walmart, bestbuy, circuit city and office depot. anyone who works in their technology departments can set you up. Your card reader is nothing more than another place to store data.

A card reader would work. some printers have them onboard, that's where mine are.. what I just did as an experiment with my camera ( HP digital 620 ) is, using Ubuntu linux, I installed Gphoto2 and gtkam ( software and frt end for unloading ptp cameras ), plugged my camera in, detected it and then I was able to unload it onto the computer.. The Casio Exiles are listed as compatible also
