I do not want to start a fight…but when does a trend become a trend?
Was there some rodder back years ago that painted his crate satin black with a red top and whitewall tires and then everyone said hey that looks great? Then a trend was born.
It just seems you go to any car show and there will be a large minority of cars that all look generally the same.
When did hot rodding stop being about individuality and innovation??
Now you can yell at me for bad mouthing all the clones.:rolleyes:
It's always been that way.... Nothing new here...
Hot Rodding, as any other activity, has 3 kinds of participants:
1. Those who watch things happen
2. Those who make things happen
3. Those who wonder what just happened
There's still a lot of us who build what we want how we want. Trends are fine for people who don't have hyper-avtive imaginations and would rather use established combinations, colors, bodies, or whatever... They are no more or less a Hot Rodder then anyone else.... A store bought car is just as much a Hot Rod as any home built... Don't matter the road you take, what matters is you've arrived.... I made a good living for a lot of years building cars and modifying cars for others who didn't have the time, talent, or equipment to do it themselves....
Then again, it depends on your definition of innovation..... I don't think a car is innovative unless every panel on the car has been altered or changed in some way, shape, or form... Others think innovative means a really unique paint and graphics layout on a Deuce..... He's just as innovative as I am, just that are methods and materials are different....
Rat rodders like to tell us how different there cars are....but if your car isn't like theirs then it's not a rat rod.... So then they were called "traditional" cars, usually built by youngsters who heard one too many stories about "back in the day" at happy hour someplace....
Hot Rodding is about doing what you want...If that's copying somebody else's car, that's fine... If it means starting with a pile of tubing and a few sheets of aluminum, that's fine too....
There is no definitive definition of a Hot Rod... and I've seen a lot of copy cat cars that are done to a much higher quality then the original they copied........ No group or faction is better then the other, they're all just doing what they want which IMO is far more important then being innovative or being a copy cat.....

Ya know what, it's satire, I know that.... I wouldn't want to build a copycat Deuce.... But those that do are building what they want, simple as that... Far be it for me to put them down... If it's what they want, then it's kewl....
BTW, hot rodding has been alive and well for many years now.... There's not much left to build that is totally unique..... Maybe we're all just copycats????
You might also want to take time to thank these guys for buying in quanity on building these copy cat cars you would seem to despise, they've supplied the working capital to a lot of companies, both suppliers and builders to continue to be able to build (finanacially) the "innovative" cars......
IMO nobody has a car that is so good he can look down his nose at any other segment of the sport......
Oh yeah, whoever made the cartoon would seem to be mocking Gray Baskerville..... better let him know he's walking on thin ice there.... I doubt many will ever add as much to Hot Rodding as Gray did, RIP Gray!!!!!

Why is that so sad???? I've bought and sold many cars with the sole intent of making a profit.... Heck, I'm a Ford guy and building a 'Maro...just to make some profit to dump into other projects..... Guess I don't see anything wrong with making a buck or two on Hot Rods and parts.... Doubt anybody will be paying my bills should I decide to do it for free....... My own first choice is subject to change without a moments notice....But when I decide what it is it's gonna take a bunch of bucks to build it. So in the meantime, I build and sell cars, sell parts, do work for $$$$$ on other folks Hot Rods....Quote:

I have never bought a car thinking I would get rid of it later - I bought it because I fell love (lust?) with it and had ever intent to drive it forever. And also I know the limitation of my talents and realize there is little chance I could turn a profit on any car I restored!:D (And so far that is been soooo true!)
But if you love the car and enjoyed driving it - losing money on it when you do have to sell, helps lessen the sting!**)
There are four basic types of collectors...
- The man that sees his car as an investment - and really has no intent to drive it, but just display!
- The man that is emotionally attached to his car and will go in debt over it and loves it like a family member!
- The man that loves cars and is talented enough to make a little profit of some cars so he can enjoy the ones he really wants.
- And the man that restores cars for a living and loves to see the other three drive up!:LOL:
Maybe I just got old or something.... Everything I own is for sale. No big deal, by the time I get one about 75% done I'm bored with it anyway and ready to move on to a new project.... Is there a car I'd keep forever and ever and not care what it's value was in relation to the general market or a niche market????? Nope. Cars are cars.... The best thing about building one is when you sell it you have lots of $$$$$$ to start on the next one..... I've sold many cars before they were completed and I ever got the first drive in them..... No big deal to me, ready for a different one anyway.
