well march 18th 2008 at 6pm a public meeting at the spokane country fairgrounds will warrant, if the county deems enough public interest has been showed if they will purchase the track and keep it open or not. they are interested they just want to see how much public support they can get to solidify the purchase <basically making it worth their while> hope it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That looks like a really nice set up, it would be a shame to have it voted down, to bad we couldn't give our support over the internet. We had a nice 1/4 mile srtip where I used to live and like most of the others it's gone. In the late 60's it was really going strong. US 30 Drag Strip Merrilliville In.

Hoping and praying won't help, well praying maybe. God drove a Fury. The most obvious thing that will save your track is to organize every racer, car guys and gals, dealers and parts houses and anyone elseyou can think of that may or has made a penny off the track to be there and support the retaining of the facility. Have the figures in hand to show how much this has contributed to the tax base. Hotels , Motels, campgrounds and cafes. Work the tax angle. Counties love taxes. Get the NHRA to have a rep there to extol the virtues. Find someone wealthy to sponsor the facility. Have a rep from the roundy guys there and the road racers. Offer the facility for drivers ed and even driving lessons. Every advantage to having the facility must be pointed out. Even play the street racer card. The most important point- The county commision must want it or nothing will get it for you. So numbers of people there is not the most important part, numbers of vocal voters supporting it is. Get everyone that will listen talking it up to the commision. It will be a long haul till this is finalized . Dont give up or even slack off. Even if they initally say no ,keep hammering it, bring it back around. If they do buy it, they are going to need someone with organizational and public skills to operate it for them and the guy that managed to get it saved would be a likely candidate.

61 bone is right try to let them know how important it is to get the young guys, and gals into things that keep them out of trouble. These same young people could be helping the tax system by being involved in the hobby/sport by working with cars, selling parts, making parts. Good point 61 bone.

I agree with 61bone. Without the support and backing of any and everyone that has anything to do with cars it will go yo waiste. Do what you can but dont do it alone. Get like minded people involved.

Scooter, I agree with what everyone else has said, the more people involved the better.
From the aerial shot it looks to be in a relatively unpopulated area which is a good thing. Keep us posted on the outcome.

Richard, where'd you live?? I grew up in Portage and used to go to US 30 as a kid and then again in Highschool. Left for the Navy in '84 and came back and it was closed... Too many people saw the oportunity for "money" in that town, so every bit of land around it was sold for housing, then when the people moved in and got tired of the noise, guess what...shut the dragstrip down even though it was there for 30 years before the houses were...!!

track was built round the late 70's it is completely NON hra santioncable. the stands go right up to the tack maybe 4 feet away from the track to the stands. thats already out unless major remodeling is done as the stands are concrete. we are trying to organize every racer we possibly can to go out there and help out both rounds round drag and road coursing. the cops already use it to train their new drivers i would be willing to bring up obvious statements about some type of driver training. and an open night on wed or thrusday for a t&t would be great. the local business in the town its in arent that special just a bunch of fast food and only 1 hotel. its about 5 miles outside of town and its takes a whole differnt aura to it. walmart just moved in down the road from it and apt's have begun to spring up. we need it to keep the idiot kids off the street on fridays. they ahve had a program for the last 5 or 6 years running on fridays its 5 bux to watch 7 to race and all the kids in their hondas and the crotch rockets really like it come out and race. lots of kids come to just hang out also. the cops also patrol for drunk drivers. its a good thing i hope we dont lose it.
