that is such a shame. Wonder about other states. They could have done alot better for those vets then what they did. I believe that this country is slipping into madness.

That is a complete shame. If I ever find out that any of my fallen brothers or family members who have served ended up like that you can bet I'll raise a stink about it. I think I'm going to write an article for the Marine Corps gazette about that story on behalf of all of us veterans. If you want me to include anything let me know.

this country has gone to sh*t everything is falling apart. this is ridiculous,.........................

No big surprise to me.... Fortunately, Vet issues are back in vogue now and hopefully something can be done before we're back to being ignored.....
Heck, how many years did it take to get anyone interested in POW/MIA issues from Vietnam.... Haven't heard much about it for the last couple years so I guess it's gone out of style again....
It's certainly not a "new" problem as evidenced by the remains of WWI and WWII vets in a can laying on a shelf someplace..... As with most vet issues, like the homeless vets everyone will agree that it's a shame, then little if anything will ever be done about it....
Face it, once you're off active duty status and no longer able to participate in whatever war the politicians have deemed necessary at this point in time as a Vet we serve no worthwhile purpose any longer. Always been that way, probably always will be.
-
Certainly sad to see, but I am not surprised either. If the vet (or you or I) had no living relative to claim the ashes then storing the ashes would be the proper thing to do. I really don't like the storage system though. They could have used much nicer containers Hell my dog and cat that died last year are at least in nice wooden boxes with their names on the box. That's the least I would have expected for a person and especially a vet. Not some damn old rusty and damaged tin can.
I am also thankful that none of the facilities went brain numb and threw the ashes out. Now maybe many or even all of these forgotten souls will be finally placed at rest with dignity.

I seen that on tv when it first aired & the wife & I looked at each other in disbelief....joe

At least now, things are coming out, and things are starting to happen.
Yep ,I just upgraded from the 30 round stick mag ,to the 100 round drum clip on my tommy gun ,with the removable butt stock.......how short can I make the barrel before she overheats.....

Why should we be outraged at this? It is just another in a long line of failures of the goverment and the people of the United States to take care of the men and women who have fought and died for this country. This country has a long history of not living up to any promises made to those who defend it. As we speak, I reasonably believe that other places that have these stockpiles of cremains are quickly dumping them before they are caught with them, so they won't have to answer for them. Perhaps it would have been better to let them rest where they were.
Tears are shed for my forgotten comrades in arms.

That's why a lot of us say we'd rather die than go to a VA facility for anything. For me I'd say the lack of follow through is not what was promised or implied. It may be that it should go without saying that human remains of anyone should be disposed of properly. Seems basic.
At the time me and my squadmates could have cared less what anyone did with our remains if we bought it. It's the luxury of us now old men to become sentimental when thinking about stuff like this. Realistically for me personally at this stage of life I still don't care what they do with my remains. So I've gone full circle back to when I was 20.
We Americans have the benefit that most all our KIAs have been recovered from the battlefileds of old. Many, many countries do not have the monetary resources we do to that and their warriors lie in unmarked places.
This appears on the surface to be a no brainer since we have remains, we have names and all we have to do is inter them. Doesn't seem too complicated. Of course with all the red tape and conflicts of governmental departments plus systems that seem to work with luck only most times, this shouldn't surprise us I suppose.

[QUOTE=Twitch]That's why a lot of us say we'd rather die than go to a VA facility for anything. QUOTE]
Well, the VA has been my only source for medical care for the last 30 years.... It's what you do when no one will sell you health insurance for anything less then a grand a month (that quote was about 20 years ago, probably a bit higher now!!).... I've had issues with certain doctors there, but I've heard a lot of horror stories about people using private facilities, too.... Guess if it wasn't for the VA I would either be dead or living in a cardboard box under an overpass somewhere.... You're fortunate you can afford private insurance and private care. Many of us don't have that option....
-
It's like everything. Some facilities are better than others, HMO, VA, or private.

This would not have happened when our Generation of Hero's were in charge, (well, it seems to have started then from their time frame) IF they knew about it. heads would roll, Today the VA is all about reducing their operating costs as Congress continues to lower their budget EVERY session and the amount of Vets climbs daily!. What we were promised is NOT going to happen in so many way's it makes me sick. I am VA patient and have been for many years , Our local VA is run very well and saved my life on several occasions, But even there a Desert Storm vet recently comitted suicide because the VA turned him away. His nightmares ,got to be too much to handle for him and could not get help. This made National news ,DISCUSTING! as I write this I get a sick feeling in my gut. I am planning on a barial w my brothers when its time. If you do not like the treatment we get CALL / WRITE/ VISIT/ PROTEST your elected senators and congressmen. (please don't sweat me the spelling/grammar, I AM PISSED)
