How do you guys protect your grill/smoker?

I have a smoker/grill that me and my POPs made so I would like to keep it around for awhile. Besides not leaving it out in the rain:CRY: how can I keep looking good. At this time It does have rust on it but I think I am going to spray some of the rust converter stuff on it. Do you guys think this stuff will be safe to spray on the outside? As for the inside how do you take care of the bare metal that gets heated to high temps which seems to always rust????
