ok i will ask the stupid question !:D whats the hell is on the inside???
i have never cut one up ...
Most use platinum for the catalyst....
Platinmum was trading today for $1469.00 per ounce.
holy smokes! but how much would you actually get from a converter?
Platinum, Pallidium and Rhodium in a 3 way cat.. '95 up, govt mandated 3 way cats, which the platinum was added, for NOX emissions
Catalytic converters are used to control hydrocarbon combustion emissions from gasoline powered vehicles. The converters, first mandated in 1976, contain small quantities of the strategic metals platinum, palladium, and rhodium contained within a matrix of either alumina oxide or magnesium aluminum silicate. These platinum group metals (PGM) act as catalysts in chemical reactions which convert carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide, incompletely combusted hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water, and nitrous oxides to nitrogen. This helps to alleviate the build-up of incomplete combustion products in the air around cities, decreasing air pollution problems.
Like it says small quanities so I would guess a small quanity of cash.. Ha ha
yes, there insides are mostly constructed of ceramic, just supports the catalyst...
In Middleburg Ny, there is a place called Hubcap heaven.. it started as a collector popping hubcaps off of cars in the crushing lineup for a collection, way back when.. now it's a store for used hubcaps... point is, a little here, and a little there.. you can have somthing big..
I have a man come from texas every year and buys my pile of cat`s I remove from customers cars ......
he was just here last week , took about 75 used cat`s and left me $ 3000.00 cash :D

Also, there are guys who steal the cats off Jeep Cherokees with battery powered sawals so fast that they can do it while the driver is in an 7-11
guess that they can crawl under the jeep and the cat is readily accessable
And to think about all those I hollowed out in the 70s
I mainly worked with the Ford stuff, saw the cat in two, remove the honey comb stuff weld back together--later discovered that I could use one of those flat bladed drill bits to cut a hole and then collapse the stuff and vaccume out the pieces
If anyone has any Catalic Converters for sale DO NOT CUT THEM OPEN!!!!!! To get the best price a buyer needs to see the Cat to determine the value.
My son is in the Automotive Recycling business. His main business is tires but also buys Cats, starters, engines, aluminum wheels, etc., from cars. Every so often he loads up his van with 15 inch Chev steel wheels from here in Minnesota and takes them down to Missiouri and sells them. On the way home he buys Cats. He also buys them on E-bay. Some of the Cats are only worth $5.00 while other ones up to $175.00 each.
My son makes about $2.00 on each one - I wouldn't monkey around with them for that little bit of profit, but he works in volumn. SOOOOOO if any of you wants to sell any PM me and I'll pass you name on to him.
You`ve heard of tweekers, ( drug addicts) stealing wire and stuff, well the
latest crave around here is stealing Cat converters to support their habbit.
may sound strange, but true
Not long ago in the news was the guy who took a hack saw to a 60,000 volt feeder line.....it's just natures way of cleansing the gene pool.Quote:
