I was bidding for a item and this person kept out bidding me. Now the person has like 50-60 bids that they have made for other items in the last 30 days but not 1 purchase to the account. I think its the guy trying to run up the bidding on the item I was bidding on. I guess he could push it as high as possible. If he loses , what, he is going to pay his self for his item? WTF????
Is he only bidding on items sold by one seller?
I've had runs where I bid on 8-10 different items and goy non of them. E=bay polices that kind of thing pretty well.
there are several tricks that are used on Ebay quite often that are hard to pin on a person. One common trick that is used to find what your high bid is (if you are high bidder) consists of the scammer gradually increasing his bid until he becomes the high bidder...he has now found your high bid. Then, he cancels his bid, claiming it was a typo. Then, he can wait until the end of the auction and enter his winning bid. I have bid against scammers that had 75+ cancelled bids in the last six months, all supposedly typos.
Another scam is to shill bid by either setting up another account (easier to catch because the source computer is the same as the listing computer) OR have a buddy bid from another computer. If it works by driving up the bid amount, they gain. If they accidently are the high bidder, the seller delists the item at the last minute OR sometimes he eats the Ebay fees.... for small items, the fees are small so it is no big deal. For cars, they claim a local sale and delist early.
Also, there is the feedback scam where the scammer buys a bunch of small, cheap items, pays quickly and gets great feedback. Then, he sells something of high value. Many bidders check his feedback but miss the point that the feedback was from buying, not selling.
I have sent evidence of scamming to Ebay but they always respond that they investigated but found no fraud.
What should one look for in doing "background" checks on these accounts?
I am no computer whiz but as long as I have particitpated in online auctions, ther have been software proggies to up the bid by the minimum amount to beat your bid. If nobody bids until the last moment, it stays more fair and even with the software available it can be won with directive timing and stick it out. Unfortunately, the bidding wars are extremely competitive. Good luck.

Big, one thing that you can look at is to see what your competitor is bidding on... usually, if they bid up the item, they have done it before...compare bidder names for the seller's past sales. Also, check to see if the ebay user name has been changed.
If you search enough, there is usually a pattern. The new Ebay format hides the bidders names on high dollar stuff so it is harder to decipher.
i had the same problem with a bid once , everytime i bid i got one upped , i finally ran the part through the roof and quit leavin the part to the high bidder ..
next day got an e-mail saying they couldnt collect from the person blah blah blah and that i could purchase the part using my last bid , well hmm i told them where they could place the last bid along with some other instructions
its scammers running programs ..
Also, a lot of them are using bid snipe software, tough to bid faster then the 'puter!!!!!!
i have had some good buys with the "buy it now " option but i dont bid on much of anything anymore the scammers have ruined what started out as a good idea..
ya , so far good luck with the buy it now items..... The person that out bid me seemed to pop up out of know where. I was the highest bidder by the time I refreshed the screen I was out bid by a new guy..... The guy with 50-60 bids in 30 days and zero purchases.
I put all of my "wants" in the "watch" file and save any bidding for the last 3-5 minutes, if there is to be any bidding wars it starts before then and i don't bother. I have had a problem trying to get my bbc p/s pump that one vendor always lists and another "shop" (same one all the time) outbids. Hard to tell if they are scamming together because some guys sell just the brackets. I moved on but still looking.
I have had over a 145 bids won,I put the item on my watch list and make the bid at the very close with less than 30 secs remaining,that way if some one is running the bid up you can pass it up and not buy it,your odds of winning are better with less competition.Did not do so well when I had dial-up isp,high speed improves the odds!:3dSMILE:
The key to Ebay is patience. Sellers WANT you to get caught up in some frenzy of being competitive and outbidding the next guy. Don't get married to some item and bid past the vaule of the item. You WILL see the same or similar item in a 1-2 weeks usually and be able to snag it with an opening bid.
Ebay just flows like that. 6 guys all bidding something up double its value one week and no interest in similar item the next. Go figure.
Don't fall for the idea that you don't want to lose an item for the sake of 50 cents. Make the maximum bid you want to go and leave it alone till the end of the auction.
I was looking for a vintage desert water bag. They are continually offered on Ebay so are not really rare. I saw generally what they went for with the stupid exceptions when some nuts bid them up to $45! I bid for probably 3 weeks. One max bid. I finally got one for $18. Sure I coulda got one for $50 I guess but why not be patient?
Where I see the same guy bidding on the same type of item I wonder what the hell he's doing, wanting to buy a bunch of the same thing to resell or what. Sometimes I think they just makes several bids and figure they'll win one and if they win 2 that's OK too. I don't know.
I personally never bid if the seller has less than a 98% performance factor and I read the feedback include any negatives. A 99% positive feedback on 6,000 sales is pretty damn safe.
I sent the guy a e-mail on the heads that I was bidding on . The e-mail asked who is the person up bidding with 50 bids in the last 30 days and no purchases. Well I did get a reply this is what I got,

I love eBay. Almost my only source of parts. I practice the "don't bid until the last minute or two" rule. Bidding on an item days before the end of the auction does no good for anyone but to run up the price. I also run the snipe software sometimes, if I am not going to be home.
Just come in late, bid high and win it cheap.
Ok, so I got my eyes:eek: on a item. Lets say another 1 person has the bid at 200 dollars. Close to the end of the auction I should enter the max I think is worth for the item (say 300 dollars) and e-pay only takes whats needed to win?????? So I will not pay 300 dollars that I entered but 201.?????
Right if there are no other bidders your current bid will not change. If you entered a max bid of $300 and others bid but not over that amount you'd still win. If bidding goes over your max bid of $300 your SOL unless you enter a higher bid over $300.
yup, you would only pay $201. But remember, the 200 that is currently the high bid, may not be the other guys highest bid either. He may have bid 250 but be ebay puts him at $1 higher than the last bid. If he had bid 250, youd win it with 251... Bid your max!!!Quote:

"no reserve" means the item will be selling at the highest bid, even if the highest bid is 1 dollar. If the seller sets a reserve of say $500 and the bidding only gets up to $450. He doesn't have to sell it. The key to reserves is that it is a hidden number, you don't know what it is.
I usually stay away from auctions with reserves...almost always the reserve is set high, no chance of getting a deal. eBay charges a seller more to list an item with a reserve price.

I buy and sell on ebay all the time, have for years, you have to do it, to learn what to do, everything I read from people on here is what you do!, I just sold 36 parts for trucks I got rid of, and now don't need the extra parts I had, and made good money doing it. One thing that gets people is the shipping. some sellers will put things on cheap. and then charge 3X tha cost of shipping or more!, I only charge what it cost to actualy ship, I get my box's free. so WATCH the shipping costs!!!! I just bought the wife a new sealed picture printer for $.99, and $25.00 shipping, which really only cost $7.20 to ship, but I knew that going in.
I watched my auctions end (past 3 weeks, and will go another couple weeks, I have more to sell) most of the bids come in, in the last 10 seconds! I use another auction place that sells mechines, and if someone bids in the last 15 seconds, it goes another 10 min's, which I like.
Be carfull and ask questions!.
I have been ripped off by sellers, and not by buyers!.

One thing I just got wise to is the mutual neg feedback removal policy, its a friggin scam, I don't know why ebay allows it.
I just bought a phone for my sister in law, we got ripped off so I leave them a negative feedback, they counter with a neg feedback to me (even though I did nothing wrong). Then I get a request from them for a "mutual withdrawal" of feed back. I told them to suck it. I can live with 1 neg, even though it was undeserved. They are pissed off about this, its a small price to pay...

Man , I got screwed. Heres what I was to purchase.
UP FOR BID AT NO RESERVE IS A SET OF SLIGHTLY USED SBC DART ALUMINUM PRO 1 CYLYNDER HEADS. PART NUMBER; DAR11610020. THESE HEADS ARE EQUIPPED WITH 2.05 INTAKE VALVES, 1.60 EXHAUST VALVES, GUIDE PLATES, AND VALVES SPRINGS GOOD TO 700 LIFT. THESE HEADS ARE LIKE NEW WITH ONLY 31 QUARTER MILE PASSES. THEY NEED NOTHING BUT A NEW OWNER. READY TO BOLT ON AND RUN. MY 3100LB PLUS CAR RAN 9'S IN THE QUARTER WITH THESE HEADS. THE ONLY THING THESE HEADS NEED IS A LIGHT CLEANING. PAYMENT MUST BE PAID IN FULL 5 DAYS FROM AUCTION END. CHECK OUT OTHER AUCTIONS I HAVE A LOT OF SBC PERFORMANCE PARTS.
What I got was not slightly used. I guess technically they could be slightly used by the seller but were all ready used when he got them. The screw in studs are the smallest ones and IMO no way handle .700 lift. Valve stems and seats are rusted out. Two of the flat inner springs are missing. So as stated ,like new ,slightly used ,and ready to bolt on and run was not true . Oh well lesson learned. What do you guys think was the item listed accuratley?
I would say from the color of the rust ,that the guy cleaned all the deposits off the valves and ports ,then he hosed em off and did not dry them ,....I would say they were probably nice when he took them off,he just wanted to clean them up fer ya..!:LOL:
I would not hesitate to snap some pics and exsplanations to send to the seller,maybe he did not know they got that bad or maybe he is a liar ...I dunno?
I e-mailed him and told him I had some problems with the heads. He replied that he had pictures and they left him in good condition. What I have now was cause d by me. I asked if he could send the pics so I can view them . He said let me see yours first. So I sent them and he never replied back. I gave negative feed back for him stating valves were rusted and springs were missing parts , NO bolt on. He replied I was a worhtless POS that changes words. I have reported with pay-pal what I had but I am sure their MINE!:LOL: In my e-mailsbefore the purchase he assured me they were in excellent condition! Man if he think these things are excellent I feel sorry for the poor idiot. Then the slightly used ,like new ,only 31 passes , thats probably true when they were in his hands. These things look a lot older than 31 passes. Live and learn
I also bought a set of heads from E bay . They both were cracked and repaired ! But they were repaired well . And they should be ok to use I HOPE ! Before you get to upset . I think those heads you bought can be cleaned up and saved . Buy a new set of springs and seals . mark and Remove all of the valves . You may have to buy 2 or 3 valves if they are pitted . Clean up the pockets and reinstall the valves and new springs . Hand lap all the valves to the seats when reinstalling the valves . When your done those heads will be nice . :)
Ya , thats what I figured. I have called a place here in my neighborhood that do Quality work to see when I can drop them off. No answer , must be the holidays.:whacked: I want to know how many cc' are for the combustion chamber, they are supposed to be 72cc. See how that goes.
Contact the guy, if he's he not a d!ck, he should work it out with you, maybe kick back some $$ or take it back and refund you.
There's always neg feedback, not much of a consolation though...
Na , hes not helping . Got defensive with my first contact. Said I caused the rust and the parts became missing in my hands. He hasn't replied since.
