yep,,,,about five miles high,well,sober actually!
hey Corvette...mine is a 64 also.....scary at speed . front end likes to lift.
my 78 firebird speedo only goes to 95... but I had it pointing straight down plus some when that jerk behind me turned on his flashing lights. turned out it was a DEA agent. He goaded me into it. really.... Once he figured out I wasn't runnin drugs, he sent me on along my way. Good thing, cause it would have really sucked to get haulled off to jail less than two miles from my house.
ALSO it is worth mentioning... DEA dude couldn't hang. He was waaaaaaay back there...
On the flip side of the coin... I was in my 66 C 10 with worn out 50s in the back, on a snowy day in Ga. ( the blizzard of 93 ) Was trying to climb the hill to the house. Was in second gear, speedo showing about 45, and creeping up the hill sideways at probably two miles per hour, tires SCREAMING. I parked it and walked the rest of the way home. the snow burned off by noon, and I walked back and got it then.
One time I had to get to London quick, so we went on the Concord. This was the time when the one crashed in France. When we got ready to come home they had stopped flying completely. The one photo doesn't show it to good but you could actually see the curvature of the earth at that altitude.

Routinely running 116mph on the strip but fastest was in an old ('80?) Pontiac Grand Prix my buddy and I "borrowed" from his dad's paint shop... 140 on a country road until a motorcycle pulled out in front of us about a quarter mile up. The ride was so smooth you wouldn't know we were fast but for the dashed center lines flying by (and the speedo that topped at 160) We were both stupid 14 yo kids...
In the late 80's my buddys dad bought used X-highway patrol cars from lousiana. We drove them home after the auction about 100 miles to his house. Last time we did it he bought an 85 impala with 350 4bbl and a 87 crown vic 351/2bbl. My buddy wanted the crown vic so i was stuck with the impala. We drove them all the way home to the floor. Had 120mph on speedo but the needle was burried the whole time. Oh the worn out impala was faster than the crown vic on take off and top end. Man those cars were set up for top end they handled great at top speeds.
Wow! Good 'Vette stories. We had a '64, too; had it up to 136 according to the speedometer - was on a nice straight desert highway, going for the limit when I noticed it start to "hunt" a bit, side to side. Then, hit a low spot in the road and felt the suspension droop out then compress real hard, and it started vibrating and acting like it wanted to lift the frontend; that was all I could take. :whacked::LOL:
120 street racing a harley in a 68 gto. harley won.
Recently, I was riding my 01 Indian Chief, and came off the line next to a ricer ( car ). He thought he was racing me. The engine sounded pretty nasty, and I wouldn't doubt he fogged it. He did out-excellerate me, and pretty good too. BUT.. the thing is... I wasn't trying.
Moral of the story is: never race a motorcycle in a car. It's not a fair match.
seem like the thing to do at the time. I could not resist:LOL:
You would think that with a sleek looking body like those cars had that they would be aerodynamic. Not so... The drag coefficient on a 60's corvette is about like a UPS truck until it gets to about 120 mph. Then its like more like a Cessna. Good thing they didn't put fins on them or they might have lifted off. I've heard that the early sixties model impalas had the same problem trying to lift the front end. I guess they let too much air under the car.Quote:
