I have a 1,200 lb stand and i am all most ready to start my first engine. I don't have the car yet but would like to brake the cam in and make shure it sounds all right before i install it. can i start it on the stand? i was going to make an H frame to holed the front of the engine up by the engine mounts and i just dont wont to to flip!**) or some thing dumb happen!:CRY:
If it's just an engine stand, the answer is no. You need a stand bolted to the floor, supporting the engine at the motor mounts and at the rear. YOu also need to have the flywheel attached, water supply, cooling, gas supply and wiring.
If this motor doesn't have a roller cam, you'd need a really good stand, because you need to run the engine at 2500 rpm or so for 20 - 30 minutes to break in the cam.
Be sure to have someone video-ing if you do it. They pay big money for these funny videos on TV. :LOL: :LOL: :LOL: :LOL:

There's a lot of difference between a run in stand and an engine stand as Jack said. Along with the things Jack mentioned, you're also going to need a good fan to push air through the radiator, and some sort of muffler attached to the headers so you can listen for nasty noises...
Fire a BBC on an engine stand, and the engine stand is going to rotate around the motor. You don't want to try to violate Newton's third law. You'll get more than a ticket. :3dSMILE:
Reminds me of a neighbor kid and a couple of his buddies a few years ago. His dad had pulled a complete sbc and left if laying on the ground. The kid and his buddies hooked a battery up and an ignition switch and poured some gas down the carb. It took awhile, but it did finally fire for a few seconds and watching those kids scramble was priceless. Just wish I'd had a camera. :LOL: :LOL: :LOL:
My cousin and I fired up a Dodge flathead six sitting on the ground,it idled fine, but he snapped the throttle open and the thing went rolling across the ground. Just lucky it went away from us! We were like 10 or 12 years old, not too bright.

well i was going to run cooling the flywheel will be attached. the stand i have has 4 legs and we are going to bolt it to the ground or sandbag it.c I was going to add support to the engine with the H frame. the H frame well mount to the engine mounts then to the ground to holed up the frount of the engine.
it is a bbc 402
Sandbags won't hold it. Are you perpared to run it for 30 minutes or so to break it in? If not, you may wipe the cam.

man i wouldn't think the engine would flip a stand or go crazy on the ground i have seen vids on you tube of an OLDS disel and a olds 350 gas engine they rocked a little when reved but thats it

I also put that this is a sorry excuse for a engine teacher and these kids will have bad habits that will be hard to get rid of and that I could not believe this was a credited class taught at schools.This type of thing at a school is unacceptable and should not be tolerated.

This is big accredited engine school................sad stuff here .I cant even begin to list all the no no s here........I bet the exaust is real good in a enclosed shop enviroment.....
well the stand i have it a lot more hared core then the one in that vid. i am going to bolt it to the Flore with RED HEADS and run the brace off the front engine mounts to the stand and the ground to holed it up instead of all the wate on the back.
i know u think i am being ignorant about all the info guys gave me but i will take all the steps to make it safe. i Will post a vid
I don't even like to roll an engine across the floor too far on the engine stands, I've had them start to tip over on me once or twice. Did you notice in that video the engine torquing over as it fires?? I know we all take some chances now and then, but..................

what do you have to loose?
If somthing does not hold up and even if you are out of the way.....what happens if the engine falls to the floor???what is it going to bust???Block?heads?carb?ect...ect.....
I saw someone crank a 4.3 V6 hanging from a chain fall...it idled fine but when they gassed on it, it torqued up pretty good, was moving 6 or 8 inchs or so................I was not very comfortable with that.
I have an old grits mill power plant skid frame that is about 8' long and 3' wide made of two 6" beams, it weighs about 500 lbs and works great for a test run stand..........Mounts radiator, engine and transmission.
Well this is what i set up i was pushing it and shoving it and it is hared as a ROCK! i am going to add some T brasing to it to make it more stiff

Just pullin' your leg. You asked the question, so folks are going to give their opinions - even it isn't what you'd like to hear.
If you secure it to the floor and supply water, etc., it may work. I was just never in a hurry to start an engine. Good luck.
yeah i here u the thing is i need to start it be for winter this way if some thing gets messed up i have time to fix it be for i get the car i would be up shits creek if i get the car and it has to sit in my backyard for a yearQuote:

Well, I was gonna post some sage advice, but I see where this is going, or has already gone - and I'm old, and don't know anything; just ask my 16 year old grandson.
Set up a vid-cam in a safe place, BBM, and I hope you can get away with this. Show us the pictures after. :cool: :toocool:
Keep yourself on the kill switch and out of the plane of rotation!
Wood structural supports and BBC's are not good bedfellows. Though the setup you have will probably work for a while, but don't challenge Darwin's law on it.

I built a run in stand , you can see a picture of it in the gallery. I was running up a 351c on it in the picture. Its in my photos dberens I have it set up for fords and chevs. The fords I had to build plates for the different engines, to mount the starter to , but it works good.Break the cam in, set timming, set the carb up, good display bench if your selling the motor to.
i have three run in stands made from chevy subframes..20 1/2" bolts holding them to the ground. you have big BIG nuggets.. i would start one on a engine crate before i would use one of those stands..
