I used to dodge boats like your while waterskiing on that same river. :) Just kidding. We kept our distance, but the wake behind the tow was a lot of fun. BTW, I was born about 5 miles from that arch in the background of your first photo.
My dad used to run a grain and fertilizer depot in Springfield, IL, and he and my mother used to ride a towboat downriver on occasion as guests.
I'm RETIRED but was a Project Engineer, Project Manager, Shipping Clerk, Uprate Manager/Engineer, jack of alltrades for a large power generation equipment manufacturer specializing in gas and steam turbines plus a combined version of the two. Probably in excess of 90% of this was for jobs 'elsewhere' in the world than the US. It was fun, exciting, energetic, challanging until it wasn't(the last 5 years). This is one of the most fascinating projects - and I was the material manager/ shipper for about 750 million dollars of equipment to a site in Wales. It was a prototype unit, producing about 500 megawatts of power. The photo is one of the commercial versions assembly in the factory -

My Uncle Is a Trip Boat Capt. Been on a few myself (just riding). I used to load/Unload Dry & Liquid Barges at IMC Agrico. It's really neat how those boats are designed & operate...
My first job (that actually paid) was at a local Fishing & Convience store, and at a Local Resturaunt. Also Volunteered at the local Fire Dept. & trained hard for a year to work part-time paid. Did that until 3 years ago when I moved to TX. Joined the Local Dept here when I moved.
Next "full time" job (In 1992) I worked at a fab shop & General Contractor - FABCO Inc. - Did lots of different jobs for them. Heavy Equipment Operator, Maintenance at an oil reserve storage facility. Contract Operations Tech Offshore. and a few other things...
Then I worked In the shipping dept at a chemical plant that made Melamine.
The NEW Automated Packing machines resulted in an R.O.F. pinky for me... Thanks to fellas like Brian for making those...:rolleyes: .... Just kidding ...:LOL:
Next I was transferred to BASF as a Rail Maint. Laberor. Worked my way up to Rail Inspector, Brakeman, Conductor, Engineer, Then Dispatcher/ Night Crew Manager.
Then got hired at IMC Global as a Process Operations Tech. (Fancy Lingo for Highly Paid Laberor). @ 26.95 / Hour .... Whose complaining though??? Loaded Barges, Ships, Trucks, Railcars.... Whatever they wanted me to put it in... Was there 3yrs. when he Market Dropped, they shut the plant down... Myself and 256 others there got walking papers :eek: :confused: .... Fun While it lasted though.
Sooo ... Back to the Railroading at BASF... (Good thing I don't burn bridges when I leave a Job... ;) ) I always Gave 110% to my work
Next, I finally decided to go Full Time at firefighting... Hired in as a contract Industrial Firefighter / Instructor.
Now for the last 3 years I've been a Safety Inspector for a Major Natural Gas Producer... (Construction & Industrial Safety is what I went to school for along with all the other Fire training classes... Was torn between a BS in Fire Science or Safety Engineer - Shouldda Stuck with the Safety Engineer.... :rolleyes: ) I did manage to get a bunch of really cool looking initials through out all of that :rolleyes: ... like NREMT-B, NRST-I, CVRT, CRRT, CHMT, and several more .... All those simply mean that everyone can see I KNOW my ABC's .... :LOL: **) :whacked:

I have been working in the Computer Operations field for the last 13 years.
The last 7 of it for a large trucking company.
They own the little blue trucks that run up and down the road all over the 48 states and in Mexico and Canada. We are also starting operations in China.
Before that I did a myriad of different jobs. Truck driver, furniture mover, Delivery Supervisor for a furniture company here in Omaha. Also worked in the Meat packing industry for a couple of years.
But I think that I have found a home working on computers, be they large or small, I try to fix them all!

I served my machinest apprentist ship at Westing House Airbrake back in 66/7 in Chicago. Small world I think we were making brake parts for mine cars.

Boeing Flight Test...Flew on first 737 as part of Flight Test Crew and then on
the first 747 (RA001) in late 60's.
Worked for Motorola MSS for 25 years maintaing Communications for Seattle
Police and Fire as well as other Federal, State and Local Government communications installations.
Now I live on a farm and shovel horse shit and play with my cars.
Don't have to carry a pager or cell phone and most of the time I don't even wear a watch....LOL

sounds great bluestang, we drink a ton of coffee in this house. most people have to adjust to the strength of my wifes coffee. i after 20 years of her coffee sometimes close one eye on the first drink. i think thats how she keeps me from falling asleep in front of the T.V.
Dont have room to list ALL the jobs Ive held so here's just the major ones:
3YRS US Army as aircraft tech. and door gunner. 10 yrs paid fire fighter up the the rank of Fire Chief ("retired" due to falling out with the mayor!) Then back to my original career as Aircraft tech. First for Eastern Airlines in Miami and currently for FedEx Express in Memphis 4 days a week. And finally, in my spare time I work part time as a Deputy Sheriff for the local dept here. Plus, Im converting a cotton farm that I purchased a couple years ago, into a horse ranch. I like to keep busy....:LOL:

Played the drums for 20+ years...had some fun...lots of women....but not nearly enough cash to live on full time. Had the pleasure of meeting Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Lionel Hampton during that time. :cool: Anyone remember them??
I polish aluminum parts on the side for extra cash.
Far from a rich and famous lifestyle...but it pays the bills. :LOL:

Actually, I am retired (disability :whacked: almost fifty years of self abuse). In real life, I am an electrician. The job I had was at a large power company, and I worked in substation construction/maintenance, and operations; my job had elements of four trades - electrician, lineman, millwright, and test tech. For many years, on the side, I also had my own electrical contracting business, did residential concrete work, twisted wrenches for folks sometimes, and generally made a nuisance of myself. ;) :LOL:

Spent forty-odd years turning 329 acres of land from standing bush into a dairy farm. In order to get working capital I went driving cranes, trucks, (large ones, 40 tons or more,) bulldozers, excavators, buses, (tour trips,) also did a lot of contract welding on building sites, anything that paid good dollars.
Chucked it all away four years or so ago. I now spend most of my time playing in my shed, (40ft x 80ft) not doing much, but having fun.
I also run a caravan rental business, site vans, not for dragging behind a car.
It's a good racket....I pay $1500 to $2000 for a van, tittivate it up a bit, and lease it out for $35 to $45 a week. I can recoup my capital inside 12 months.
If one gets wrecked, (and so far only one has,) it's not a great loss.
It pays the bills and keeps me amused.

for the last 5 years I've been the skipper on a 110ft steel yacht
taking quest out on heliskiing adventures and during the summer we go salmon fishing.
We have used the boat for many extreme skiing movies and last year we filmed a IMAX underwater movie all along the coast of British Columbia.
Before that I ran my own 40ft twin turbo diesel work boat for the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans for 10 years. Walking the salmon rivers counting the fish and dodging the G bears.
Pulled wrenches on most of the fishing fleet in the area and had a small VW Volvo repair shop to keep me busy

Man youze guy's have some cool jobs. I have been parners with my brother in our flooring business for the past 6 years. I have installed hardwood, and tile for 25 years, I don't crawl much anymore unless I need mad money.
I also do some remodeling and build custom cabinet's just because I like to.
Man, I'm really amazed at how many people have real jobs!!!!!!

Me, diesil mechanic, for years then went up a notch as a diesil fitter working on diesil and ship gensets. Left all that last year. Now a deliveryperson and at the moment this job seems to be morphing into fregiht delivery as an owner operator....just got to sit down and think some more on that one as to..."do I really have the time to do this as for my other commitments ?"
It seems that I get the oppurtunities like this, and I am 100% sure that other people on these forums, their employers seem to ask thes 2 important questions-------------
a/ Is he reliable ?
b/ Does he know what he's doing ?
Might not be how it is said, but when you get down to the bare bones of it, that's what it means..
