IH Scout 80

So here we go again. My 72 Scout II was getting to the point where to keep moving forward I was going to really start spending some serious money and put a lot of work into it. The rust was really bothering me and the old 345 ran great but it was breaking me in fuel. We started talking about it and I learned that Kari liked the Scout II but LOVED the look of the Scout 80/800's. So I did what any good husband would do and found a fairly solid Scout 80 and sold the Scout II. We might as well put the money and time into the right vehicle. It is going to be Kari's daily driver and she is calling the shots on it. It will be getting a S-10 Blazer frame swap, the 2 door ones have the same wheelbase and it will be painted Teal with the old school white 4x4/trailer rims. This one is going to be fun for me. I picked up this 02 Blazer with bad trans, it is almost to nice to rip the body off but I'll still sleep at night. The one pic is roughly what it will look like with a little different color and rims.

I like that color. This should be fun. Are you using the s-10 drivetrain too, 4.3 v6?

I remember the IH Scouts when they were introduced, and a classmate's dad bought a new red Scout 80, a '63 or maybe '64 and it's still in the family today! I understand your concerns with the rust problems on the '72 and opting to go a different direction, but I'm curious about Kari's LOVE of the 80 compared to the 800's or Scout II. Reading through the Wikipedia history it seems that the changes through the years were the grilles, instrumentation and to a degree, improved creature comforts/convenience, plus some different top options. Makes it sound like body panels for a '60 would still fit an '80?

Also, once you're done will it be an '02 Blazer with a body change or an early '60's Scout with upgraded suspension? I guess since you have titles for both you don't have to worry with registration unless you sell the Scout frame and they insist on the title? Gonna be cool regardless!!

I will be using the 4.3 and the drivetrain. I will be moving the motor back about 4 to 5 in to make it fit better in the scout, but other than that it shouldn't go too bad I hope.

From what I understand, the 80 / 800's from the outside are nearly identical, and I think all the panels are the same. The 800s had more Driveline upgrades, like a Dana 44 rear end, and a V8 option at some point. That's one reason why I'm doing a full frame swap, this thing has Dana 27s which I understand are very wweak.The Scout II is definitely a completely different vehicle, they made a big jump going from the 800 the Scout II. I am keeping the titles for everything, but for Iowa it will be registered as a Scout

That's great!! That's been a pet peeve of mine, some states would classify it as a re-bodied Chevy, using the Chevy title! I was looking at a really nice '40 Ford PU about 15 years ago, until the guy mentioned that it was riding on a S10 chassis and was titled as a 1940 Ford PU Chevy S10!!
That's going to be a great driver for Kari!!

I always took it for granted that it wasn't a big deal to license this stuff cuz I'm used to Iowa. After conversations with you and people from other states I've learned to keep all records just in case I want to move someday. This is going to be a really fun driver for Kari, I cannot wait to start on it but we have to finish the garage first, at least that's what she says LOL

I'm pretty much the same way Seth. Az is pretty easy compared to other states to get a title , although over the past 40 years or so I've lived out here it seems that regular as clock work every 3 years or so the State will "tweak" the registration rules. It's a bit more difficult to do a title transfer than it used to be.

Possibly not a bad idea. When I bought the 76 True Spirit Dodge pickup as a project several years ago it came out of a junk yard with a "dismantle certificate of title" (what the junk yard filed for instead of a title when it came in as an abandoned vehicle....it was cheaper). To get a title I could get registration for (which would be a salvage title) it had to go through a level 3 inspection and I had to provide receipts for every part I bought for it. Fortunately it was complete enough when I bought it I was able to get it running as it sat and I got thru the inspection before I started the build. It worked out a lot better for me as by the time I got thru building it the stack of paperwork would have been a foot thick if I'd had to show receipts of the parts.

Az latest trick is you can no longer do a "title only" vehicle transfer. You have to register it for at least one year in order to do a title change. It was not a big deal on the 68 Valiant I bought to build. It did piss me off a bit when I had to register the 68 Valiant parts car (that didn't even have a motor or transmission in it) in order to get a title. The car came with a signed off (open) title and had been passed around to 2 or 3 new owners (none of which put the car in their name) between the time the title had been signed off and when I got it. I went thru a title agency on that one who processed the title transfer without any issues. It just added about $150 to what I had in the car but least I have a clean title in my name when I find a buyer for the car and I don't sell cars with an open title.

Here in Kansas (at least in MY county) a Motor Vehicle Clerk would have gone through the stack of receipts one by one, adding up the dollars spent for any receipt that didn't show State Tax paid, and if it DID have State Tax in another state, calculating the differential between the tax rates. My Johnson County Sales Tax is 7.48%, but if I lived in the city limits would be 10.475!! (6.5% Kansas state sales tax, 1.475% Johnson County sales tax, 1.5% Gardner tax and 1% Special tax.) To get the title you pay sales tax on every dollar spent, and it's subject to review after the fact.

Roger I've heard of several states doing that, not sure how AZ would have done it but I suspect it would be pretty close to the same which is why I got it registered as it was when it came from the wrecking yard then did the restoration. The build was a frame off and I threw every NOS part I could find at it.

The one thing I do like about AZ licensing is how they figure the the annual price of the plates. It's some cockamamie formula that's based on the cars MSRP and age. Every year the car is depreciated over a 20(?) year period. Which means on a new car you could be paying several hundred a year for tags and it will go down every year until it bottoms out at $12 a year. Doesn't matter if the car is restored or an old junker you just pulled out of a field. at a certain point all the tags cost is $12 a year. The other nice thing is you can by tags up to 5 years in advance! Basically for 5 years it costs me $60 plus a few dollars the state also tacks on.

Trailer plates are also a good deal. Although a they're a little high (relatively speaking) to initially register the tags are indefinite.....they are good as long as you own the trailer.

Every time I get aggravated with with AZ DMV I remind myself what I'd be paying for plates in another state. LOL
