A little big and 1 bad pic, but other than that I did manage to do it without screwing it up to bad. This winter I hope to have a big block built for my chevelle, and the 434 sb in it will go in the dodge. It has 230 ported dart heads, Motown block, Eagle forged rotating assy, 10 1/2 to 1 comp, and a bullet solid roller. I think I'm going to change the rear end and go to something narrower and a little bit stouter. Tub it and put more rubber in the rear. Any other questions just ask.
I personally like the size of photo you posted so just keep doing that. Looks like you started with a really nice bodied car for your project and although some would refer to that model as ugly, I think they are cool and especially if you tub the rear and with that engine, it will be an exciting car to drive and play in.
I'm not crazy over it, looks wise, and it wasn't in great shape to start with, little on the rough side, but it looks decent now. The more I look at it, I think a pro street look would really help the looks. I have super victor and a 850 Q series QF carb on the 434 now, I'd like to do a tunnel ram, 2 holleys, and a set of fenderwell headers. Something to play around with I guess. I have a fresh PG trans with Coan parts and a trans brake. Also a pistol grip hurst quarter stick, may use that, can't really sell it and get my money back. This is kinda a budget build, going to do the interior myself, that ought to be good.
Yeah those business coupe bodies seem to be pretty much a love or hate them deal. I had a 49 Plymouth version many years ago and was looking at another one a few years back. The color you choose to put on them seems to really make a big difference on their visual appeal.
.
They were not my favorite as a kid though they do grow on you. IMHO, this is the most iconic one of all.
Cool ride, two seat coupes are really slick looking. What drive train are you going to use?
For street use, very strongly recommend larger diameter rear bushings. Study mid-size GM arrangements, B-body Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Cutlass. Love the splayed 4-link.
Billy Shope is one of the original Chrysler Corporation Ramchargers engineers, you might enjoy his musings on suspension geometry, I know I did....

Billy had a hand in designing and building "The High and the Mighty" C/Altered '49 Plymouth business coupe that NTFDAY (Ken) linked for you in post #6. The car originally ran a 354 early hemi with 3-speed manual transmission. It's my favorite drag car of all time....

Looks to be a great project. I like the 51 look. It has a tough stance, nice curves and just the right look with what your doing already!
Nice coupe! It looks like you've gotten a lot of work done on it so far!
Inspector, I'm thinking about a narrowed rear end and some more tire. If I do, I'll go 4 link, and panhard bar. This was going to be a cruiser, but my chevelle has more room and really handles good so I was thinking mild BBC for it and a 3.08 gear.
This is my chevelle.
Sweet Chevelle!!
Making progress. It's on stands which explains high stance.
This should be the bright pic.
Stripe or scallop on the hood is the same as the one on the side. Looks white in the pic for some reason. Sorry for the wrong pic, don't know how I did that.
I think I'm going the gasser route. This thing would make a cool gasser, so I've listed the rear end, wheels and tires with some other stuff on CL. I used to lust over them in Hotrod when I was a kid. Nothing like changing your mind. Hopefully sometime in spring I'll have it road worthy. Stay tuned.
I think it'll look sweet as a gasser! I've changed my mind so many times on my 72, it's crazy.
As long as you change your underwear more than you change your mind it's all good! LOL..
I agree with Ryan.. it'll look cool as a gasser.
Commando is good, as long as you remember your pants. Well it's official, I sold the front subframe today. Got a guy that wants the 8.5, 4 link and shocks also. Now, if I can sell the wheels and tires, and mustang tank, I'll be good. I'm going to the Shades of the past in Pigion Forge Tenn in Sept, hope to find some parts there. I found the Gasser forum so I've been reading and researching. I'm more excited about this build than any I've ever done. I'm going to use the 496 bbc, I can see a tunnel ram and fenderwell headers in my future.
Put the Dodge on CL for sale. I have been wanting a late 30's, early 40's coupe forever, never could afford one, thanks to a friend I got the chance to get a 40 chev. It's a project but it is all pretty solid, and there is a IFS front susp, rack, and 2 8.8 explorer rear ends with it. He said he'd hold it as long as it takes but I hope I can move this dodge and get him paid. Doctors keep wanting to take what money I got.
Wow! You're changing directions so fast even MY head is spinnin'!
check out my web page at daytonagary.com to see what I did to the front of my 51. welded the hood together to make it one piece, installed 53 Corvette grille and welded up front fenders to match it.
That corvette grille looks sweet in there. Nice work.
I kept the Dodge, I've got a 2000 disc brake 8.8 out of a explorer. Going to cut the long tube 3 inches and install a short axle in that side to make me a 56 1/2 rear end. I can put 10 in wheels on it then. Bought a front axle, 57 chevy truck, king pin set, found a pair of front springs. Yesterday I got a gm manual gear box and a set of 25 yr old wheelie bars. Don't know if I'll use them but they were free. Figured out how I'm doing my front frame sub and almost got the 400 turbo together. Trying to get enough parts together so I can work this winter. Pumpkin run is this Sat, they have a sweet swap meet.
I'm not sure I'd trust the 8.8 for racing, especially the c-clip axles. A 9" is just about bullet proof, and dropping out the pumpkin to deal with ring & pinion issues is sooo much more convenient than pulling the carrier out the back, then setting up the clearances, IMO. Just my $0.02, and others may not agree.
A bunch of guys on the FordTrucks forum have been using the 8.8 rears off ford sport utility for the width dimensions on old 48 Ford F1 trucks when they have been converting them to hot rods. I don't know how tough they are, but it seems to be a pretty popular swap right now. Roger and the other guys here know a lot more about this stuff than me, I guess it all depends on how much torque your going to be putting on it!
A lot or 10.5 guys runt he 8.6's too. I never would have thought they would take as much power and abuse as they do. Usually most 8.8 lovers will say the 9" takes more power to run and that's why they don't switch over. To each their own.
I haven't heard anyone running a 8.8 complain yet, but the Ford 9" does have a big rep(probably why one is in my truck! :) )
Got the 8.8 narrowed tonight, straight axle is in. Got my ladder bars built, 1 in square tubing, 3/4 CM rod ends, 52 inches long total. Going to start on the tilt front end next I think.
Got my 8.8 narrowed tonight, straight axle has been tacked in place, Ladder bars are done, complete with 3/4 CM rod ends. Going to start on my tilt front end next I think. Done have it bolted together. 8.8 will be fine, going to run a automatic, going to try and put some better axles in it. If 1 does break, the disc brakes will keep it from coming out. If I get serious with this, I'll swap in something else. Moving kinda slow, doctors have taken a large chunk of money the last few mths.
The greedy bastards. Don't they realize the therapudic effects of newly purchased performance parts?
Nice progress. I hope all is going well with your health too!
