It's a 3.07 rear gear, Roger. He mentioned it on the video.

I used a starter/generator from a gas golf cart. It is a belt drive to the rear axle yoke. I originally went this route because there was not enough room for a traditional alternator (to keep the battery charged) and the starter/gen would serve to charge and reverse. After the install I ran across a nice mini alternator that fit the tight confines, and am now using it. I have not wired up the start/gen yet, but have used a similar setup in the past and it worked well enough. I may keep the starter/gen but will likely ultimately switch to an automotive mini starter with a small flywheel on the axle for a more positive engagement. I have seen this setup on bike powered mini coopers and it seems to work well.

Shop motor coming out and crate motor going in…..finally!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-P...902_134641.jpg
The motor is out. I need to finish up a couple of things while it is out. Also need to install the manual trans flywheel on the crate motor as well as clearance and install the new water pump.

Took a good shot of the one speed also.

SAH-WEET! Any chance you could get a pic of the original (po I dare say it?) powerplant???
Just curious what it started with..
Thank You!
Here it is. 358cc two stroke two cylinder

Thanks Again! I haven't seen any of these locally.. there is a project here that could use something like that..
I'll have to look around more! LOL..
Progress on the crate motor install. Since I was able to find an alternator that fits the confines of the Hijet, I have decided to remove the starter/generator and instead use the starter and flywheel from a late model Taurus for an electric reverse gear. These are cheap and plentiful and should provide a more positive reverse engagement with no belt to wear out. The starter will go here

I removed the 1 speed yoke to fit on a flange to which the flywheel will attach

Making the flange from some 1/4" plate steel

I will cut out the center section from this V8 flywheel

Next, I will machine a bushing to align the bores of the V8 and Taurus flywheels and then weld the V8 center section to the Taurus flywheel, drill out the mounting holes and open up the center bore. When finished, the Taurus flywheel will bolt up to the flange which will be welded to output yoke

Nice work.
Interesting concept to gain reverse. I'm sure we'll all be curious to see it work.
