Bad ass build!
Bad ass build!
Here's wishing you some 9's, Ryan. Hope you don't mind if I buy you a beer.

Thanks, and nope I sure don't!
It's time for a bumpity for this thread. I was thinking about cutting the cage out of this car to put in regular interior. For now, I think I'll leave it alone so we can still race it some. The poor car just sits in the barn until we take it to a show or go race it. It sure will be nice to drive it legally. I haven't insured it for 5 years because the stipulation most insurance companies have on a race only vehicle. That is changing this year. No longer will this be race only. The plan is to buy different wheels and tires, get the lights all operational, add a horn, and drive it on the street. My brother wants to drive it on Hot Rod Power Tour the last 2 days. We shall see.
Right now, I decided to put compound turbos back on it. Should be a lot more street friendly. I couldn't finish them because the waste gate is too long for the secondary turbo. It should be here Monday I think. Then I can put it back together. Next Friday we're going to take it to a dyno and see what it does and possibly tune on it some.
The primary, or big, turbo is a GT4294 with a 75mm compressor wheel 94mm turbine. We just had the 75mm comp wheel installed as these are only 71mm from the factory. It's rebuilt and ready to go. The secondary, smaller, turbo is a S300G based airwerks turbo that is 64mm compressor and 65 on the turbine. These turbos should work really well together. Making the cold pipe was kind of a PITA because of how the turbos sit in the car. There really isn't much room to get things situated in here.
Here are some pics.

Wow thats a great build, I love the diesel power !
Thanks Navy!
I haven't finished the turbo install because I'm still waiting for the new waste gate to arrive. May have to remove one from a turbo we already have on a truck to get it finished up. The car is also getting some Convo Pros and different tires as we are going to get it more streetable and cruise in it more than it has been.
We finally got a waste gate fit and adjusted on the secondary turbo and the turbos are on and now we have to make a new down pipe for the exhaust. Once that is done we can put the primary turbo oil drain on, and then re-install the injector lines and the cold pipe and intake. I still have to come up with a support bracket for the primary turbo as well. It'll be nice to have this running again.

Any new estimate of HorsePower?
It should be from 650-800hp hopefully. We're going to try to get the fuel backed off to a haze at wide open throttle and see how fast it is at the track. Right now there is no fuel plate in the injection pump so it is set on kill and it's too smoky to drive on the street. My brother has been workin gon the down pipe today and almost has it finished. More pics later.
Here's a better pic of them. The header wrap on the down pipe sure doesn't like the flash.

Small update on this one. We got the turbos all done and my brother spent about 5 days repairng things and making sure all is well before he fired it up. He thought one of my electric fans was bad and he put pressure on it and that resulted in a hole in the radiator. So the intercooler had to come out and the radiator got repaired and a new fan installed. I put some 195/60R15's on the front convo pros and put them on too. Right now the car is headed to Indy and Nick, my brother, will be racing it at the NHRDA Fass Nationals this Saturday. It's been 2 years since the car has been there last.
Your not going??? You'd have a hard time keeping me away if I were you
Gotta love thinking outside the box, I salute you!!!! I'll have to read this whole thread a bit later. Thanks!!!!
Here is a picture with the air filter on the primary turbo.

Here are some bad pics of the car with the convo pros on the front.

No real news here on this one. Back in June when Nick took the car to Indy, it was pushing oil out the breather. Plus my rear tires went flat and no one aired them up and they have some dry rot now. I haven't really been impressed with the performance of the car, and it isn't the car's fault. I'm going to make some changes, and get back into the seat. My brother means well, but he isn't a drag racer. He doesn't relay info or pay attention. He gets caught up in the moment and just spaces out. We're going to dyno it in November. Depending on what it does, I may buy an aftermarket cylinder head. I ported the holy jabeezus out of this head, and in the back of my mind, I keep thinking I unshrouded the valves, and that is hurting the power. All of that really doesn't matter as the car still really doesn't stall off the line. Well, one time it did, with a V10/V10 converter, and I'm going to go back to that converter, and make changes to the car to get it down the dang track like I should have.
First, I need to redo the back of my cage so I can get it cert't to run with the org I was running with. I'm so torn on just building a tube chassis ride and leaving this one alone. Which may be an option. I might just save up and buy a pro stock roller or similar.
Second, I'm going to buy slicks for it and ditch the quick times. Once the engine starts making boost, these tires still spin on the track. Always have since I've been running this thing.
Third, I need to replace my seat with a kirkey or something that takes up less room than the cheap plastic one I have in there now. I'd also like to redo my tin work and center console area.
We'll see how it all goes. I'm not real happy with the mid 11's it's ran and I want it in the low 10's or high 9's. It has the MPH for those times. We'll see what it dyno's and then I'll go from there on where the big purchases need to go. If worst comes to worst, I've nad a nitrous kit sitting in the shop for it, and I'll put it on.
Back in the end of October we started getting the car ready to go dyno on November 8th. I put the quick times on the Convo Pro rear wheels finally, and we added a TV pressure cable. Good news, now you can hold the car to 10psi of boost but after that the rear tires start shoving the car forward. The bad news, the place that had the dyno couldn't run it. My rear tires are too wide and the rear tires are too close together. So it didn't get a run. But, the car is closer to making a pass if we feel the need now!

You've been making good progress on a variety of projects I see. You are actually shaming me into getting off my butt and get something done!:eek: Anything!!:p:LOL::D
Car looks good Ryan, anxious to see how big an improvement it picks up this summer! Let us know when you get some sort of schedule together for where and when you'll be running the car next summer, would be fun to come see it run and meet you guys!
Love this turbo diesel Vette!
Thanks guys. Dave, we really wanted to get it up to Byron in October, but that didn't happen. Right now my brother is planning on taking ot to Beech Bend in May for the TS Diesel shindig. I'll update as we know more.
We finally got the car out of storage. My friend Kyle, finished the catch can/breather tank for it. We got it installed and my brother took the car to Good guys last weekend. When he was loading it up to bring it home Sunday he did something out of the norm, and smacked the trans pan on the trailer and it is leaking now. Hopefully he didn't hurt the valve body or anything else. Kids.
I finally got the hydraboost pressure line replaced. It ended up costing a small fortune. Russell metric o ring adapter fittings, to -6 ss braided hose, nothing $120 can't cure. I had to fix a few wiring issues, and clean it up. I took the car to a local car show 2 weekends ago, and now it's ready to be put back into hibernation.
Some exciting news, the car was featured in Ultimate Diesel Builder October/November issue. These are the only pics I have of the article right now. It's on the top of the cover, and has 5 pages in the mag. Not too bad IMO. It was shot last year when my brother took it to Indy to race it.
Way cool Ryan !!!
.
Sweet! Congrats on the magazine article. It is a very cool different setup you have. Who knows, maybe Volkswagen will consult you on clean burning ideas! ;)
That's very nice coverage in the magazine, and I expect that it will generate a few phone calls from the regional diesel crowd looking for help squeezing a few more horses from their diesels. Congratulations!
Thanks Roger. I did get 2 phone calls from 2 different places trying to sell plaques of the article. They called me before I even knew the car was in the mag. I knew it was going to be in a mag. But I was told it was Diesel World.
Here are a couple of pictures of the car before I put it in storage. In the late spring I may change the dash, and install some better seats and finish the lights so I can legally drive it on the street. Mainly, at night. I want to be able to drive it to work a few times.
That is a slick BEAST! You've done an amazing job with it.
Times two! I'd love to see it run down the track sometime...
As I said before this is an amazing project with a LOT of engine-uity!

Thanks guys. I've had some real hard thoughts of yanking the engne and trans out of this and putting a twin turbo LS based engine in it. But I won't do anything until my 40 and 76 are driving. (I hope)
I don't think I've shared these here. I found some pics from back when I put the first set of compounds on the car and it had a hold stack. These were taken at Cedar Falls Iowa at a 1/4 mile track. On the last pass the primary turbo blew up at the 1/8 mile. My brother was driving and stayed in the throttle until the end of the 1/4. It ran 11.55 and I don't remember the et. I found out later it scored a cylinder and that was a bad deal because I found that out at the NHRDA world finals.
I get a lot of crap for using a SBF in a 34. I can only imagine what the corvette crowd thinks of this!?!? LOL.. Looks like a fun ride tho'!
I'm not sure if it is on Corvetteforum, but there was a thread on Digitalcorvettes a while back. My brother saw it and started replying the the cry baby purists. It was kind of funny the non purists went after the purists. I got a good chuckle out of it.
But yes, the purists cry about it. Even though it was crusher bound. I guess I can't even call it that. There wouldn't have been enough steel to crush when I first got it.
always a simple answer............. " My car , My call "
I like to say it's the golden rule. The guy with the gold makes the rule!
Here are some others as well. These were right after we got it together and started making shake down passes in '09.
