.
love the caps,falcon..and the car looks a lot better with a shine on it,too..Amazing what a good buff will do..
Thanks, she's running great but I'm thinking about pulling the fuel tank back out and going with a fuel cell. I'm picking up a lot of rust out of the tank. I've got a filter before the pump and have clogged up 3 so far.
How about the old tow chain in the tank with a few gallons of fuel once you have it out of the car? I always heard that if you remove the float assembly, toss in a big old chain and shake the crap out of the tank it'll clean up the flaky rust. Then dump it all out, flush it good with a solvent, blow some air in to dry it and dump in a quart of good etching primer or rust encapsulator for another shake & dump. Seems like it ought to work, maybe even without the primer?
Yeah, I thought about that and priced a couple of different sealing kits but the price of fuel cells is reasonable enough that it's almost not worth the work of cleaning up an old tank. You can get a 15 gallon aluminum one with similar dimensions as the Mopar tank and a GM sending unit for about $125-$150. I got a couple more filters; I'll see if it gets any better before I pull the trigger.
Clogged up another one; I gave up and ordered a 15 gallon fuel cell today.
Where is the cheapest place to get them now? Summit or?
I found a new RCI 15 gallon cell On EBay with the GM sending unit for $115.
That isn't bad at all. If I can't get the 40 gal suburban tank to fit in the back of the frame on my Longhorn, I'm going to look at getting a fuel cell. For that kind of money, you can't mess with building one in my opinion.
I pulled the old tank and got the fuel cell mounted. Looks like it was a good move; I looked in the old tank with a flashlight and it was rusted pretty bad all the way around. Now I just need to run the fuel lines and the vent and we'll be back on the road.
Looks very nice! I may have to rethink my gas tank in my 40 for that kind of money. Good way to save $100 or so.
Well, after cruising the 51 around for the last few months I got a call from a HAMB member (dhcustoms) about wanting my car and working out a deal for a 49 Plymouth business coupe he had. After a few weeks of talking back and forth and exchanging pictures, I took the 51 to Cleveland and brought the 49 home yesterday. He wanted the bigger car to haul around more grandkids than the business coupe could hold. Dennis is a great guy to deal with, very honest, and he did an awesome job on this car. Im proud to be the new owner.
Neat looking car....but now about that wheezy flathead six........:D
